All I have to say is ""Bear Spring Mountain"" NOT ""Bear Mountain State Park""! Bear Mountain ""Spring"" Park is in the Catskills which is at least 3 hours north of NYC. There is more to NY than the city!!! 8/1/2005

How funny, people think NY is all just a big city. This beautiful area, in Downsville, is bearly even a town. Yes, it is primitive, but it is meant to be. Beautiful clear water and land. Keep opening your eyes all, the city is just a tiny part of our state. Unfortunately the rest of the country tends to overlook our farmland, mountains, lakes and of course Niagra Falls. Take a leisurely break from your everyday life and join those of us enjoying the ""country"". Begin to know your family without the TV and Video games. Bear Spring Mountain is NOT Bear Mountain 5/25/2005

Bear Spring Mountain is in the Catskills, near the southwest corner. This is not the infamous ""Bear Mountain"" located near the Palisades just outside of NYC. Stay away from ""Bear Mountain"" unless you like mingling with NYC urbanites ""roughing it"" with boom boxes and ungodly crowds on weekends. I was accosted at ""Bear Mountain"" back in the '80's (lost $32 and a watch) to a group of teenagers. Bear Mountain Springs on the other hand is a nice place to hike and camp and is family safe. This is not Bear Mountain with the Zoo 5/24/2005

This is Bear Spring Mountain located in the western Catskills, 5 miles south of Walton, New York , what most people are reviewing is Bear Mountain located between Rockland and Orange County. Bear Spring Mountain is much further north, away from the rat race of the city and suburbia. If you want rustic camping in the wilderness with little or no amminities such as flush toilets, rv hook ups, hot showers than this is the place for true wilderness camping. ""Bearly"" Worth The Trouble! 8/16/2003

This is a crowded, scenicly vacuous, glorified picnic ground. The inexorable noise of 'Boom-Boxes' & screaming kids DESTROY any merit it MAY have had. If you want some GOOD trails & nice scenery, head a bit further north to the Panther Mountain area of the Catskills. Nice SOLITUDE, nice trails & views. GREAT restaurants ""hidden"" in the woods make a wonderful to a wonderful day. Pros: Close to NYC, Ditto, Ditto Cons: Crowded, Noisey, Ugly more

Bear SPRING Mtn - NOT Bear Mtn 8/15/2003

FYI - several of the reviews on this site are reviewing a different park - Bear Mountain State park which is located quite a bit futher south where the Bear Mountain Bridge is located. It can be a very crowded and noisy park with busloads of people from NYC in the summer & fall. It is much nicer during the off season or less trafficed times during the week. Weekends - fuhgeddaboudit! It also has no camping that I know of. Now - Bear SPRING Mountain I've not been to, but I wanted to point out the mix up. more

Recognition that's long overdue 6/1/2002

I used to work at the Palisades Interstate Park years ago. There are so many sites, so many lakes, so many options that this park is unique. It has something for everyone. Climb the trail right behind the inn and get a spectacular view of the Hudson River. Just spending a day driving all of the parkways thru the park is a sightseeing bonanza. I prefer rowing a boat on either Hessian Lake or at Lake Tiorati. Day visits or camping for longer periods of time, it is great! more
