About the now-defunct Sharkeez in Hermosa Beach... 5/13/2008

At the risk of sounding crass, I will adamantly say that it's nothing short of poetic justice that Sharkeez in Hermosa Beach burned down. I frequented that place because one of my buddies was a regular there, but even he couldn't deny the racial profiling and stereotyping that went down at that joint. If you were a "minority" who didn't wear skin-tight jeans -- forget it, you weren't getting in. While a myriad people who fit the aforementioned description were being turned away by some Jabba-The-Hut looking geek named Tad, numerous Caucasian "regulars" (as "Fat Tad" called them) wearing flip-flops and/or pants as baggy as MC Hammer's back in the day were being escorted right in. The most dubious incident occurred when I went to Sharkeez in Hermosa with a few of my buddies to celebrate our recent graduation from UCLA. There were 11 of us in the group, and believe it or not, they only allowed my 4 Caucasian and 1 Asian friend from the group in. The ones left out in the cold were either Black or Hispanic. I couldn't believe what had transpired and even planned to write a paper on their profiling (accompanied with video footage of other incidents as proof) for one of my grad school courses. I bring this up now because a pretty co-worker might be heading to Sharkeez in Manhattan Beach this weekend and has already invited me. I sincerely hope that the only similarities between this Sharkeez and the pile of ash back on the Hermosa Beach strip are their names. Pros: Beautiful women, I'm sure Cons: Not too many, I hope... more

Great atmosphere, Lethargic Bartenders... 3/19/2008

I went there for a packed St. Patty's day event the Friday before St. Patty's day. The place was so packed, a lot of beautiful women... Dance floor was great... besides the DJ. There would be times he would clear the dance floor with his music choice, and then keep playing songs like that instead of fixing the situation. The atmosphere was too nice to let that bother me though. What made me have a foul taste in my mouth was the bartenders. It would literally, I'm not exaggerating, take 15-20 minutes to get a drink. I can understand that if the bartenders are busting their rears, but thats not the case here. Between almost every drink they made they would lolligag around, flirting with girls, playing grab-ass with the promoter (or host), and they'd eventually get back to making drinks like it's no big deal, while there were lots of people with the same reaction like, "what are these guys doing?" Being a former bartender I know you can pour drinks faster than that. Matter of fact, we would have been fired for the things that we saw... I'M NOT EXAGGERATING. I can't understand why they would do that, they can make much more money if they hustled and made it happen. On a night like this, the bartender should be sweating their cojones off. But overall, it was a fun night, once we faced it that were only going to be able to have a few drinks. Pros: Beach close, attracts girls, dance floor Cons: Slowest bartenders on earth, DJ is playing music for himself more

Great sports bar! Lots of TV screens, great food and drinks specials. 6/30/2006

Daily food specials, and a two-for-one happy hour. Great food and cheap. There are a lot of days where the draw is the latest sports game. Tons of flat screens located all over the bar with great tables to see them from. If no game, lots of surf videos to play as well. Sundays are great for the NFL games, as they have a great breakfast menu with champagne (free for an hour) and a bloody mary bar that you can fix your own (for a cost). A lot of special party nights and events there. Great place. Pros: Beach bar, drink specials, great food Cons: Can get crowded. more

Yup fest 1/2/2005

You want to wait in line to see a bunch of washed up frat boys pretending they have money? You want to see a bunch of cheesy Bro's in their collar shirts? You want to see older chicks who expect drinks as if they were good looking 18 year olds again? if so... then this is your spot... Food is really good though...go early to eat, leave, and avoid the HB lamers... Pros: Best food! Cons: , rip off drinks, dude fest more

  • The Scene
This lively party spot sits just two blocks away from the shimmering shores of Manhattan Beach. A regular, raucous crowd happily dives into pitchers of margaritas and cold beers on a nightly basis. Scattered palm trees and walls adorned with beach artifacts further remind patrons Sharkeez is a beach bar. Numerous TV monitors display the goings on in the world of sports, but in between games the screens are dedicated to surf or music videos. On weekend nights, DJs keep dancers on their feet with a collection of house music and '80s pop hits. While the dance floor looks small, it's amazing to see how many people can eke out a space to get their freak on.

    The Draw
Young bleached-blond gals and Hawaiian-shirt-clad guys hit the bar, and hit on each other, after a long, hard day working on their tans.
