Cooking needs MUCH improvement! 2/19/2011

My husband and I just returned from Avocados this evening. We arrived around 4:30pm for an early dinner. We were served chips & salsa immediately after sitting down. Our drinks (Mac & Jacks draft and a plain marguerita) arrived very quickly and tasted fine. I am a vegetarian and usually have no problem finding meals to eat at mexican restaurants. The menu here looks inviting for vegetarians with little icons next to vegetarian meals (maybe a total of 6-7). The problem I had is that I do not like mushrooms and every veggie dish on the menu features mushrooms as a main focus of the plate. So my options were limited to ordering a Chipotle black bean burger. Our plates arrived in a reasonable time period. My burger came with sliced avocados on top and fries on the side. I began to mush and spread the avocados on the top of the burger and then realized that the patty was cold. Not just not warm but COLD! It was still barely thawed in the center of the patty. As I waited for the waiter to return I had two fries which were hot and tasted fine. After explaining the problem the waiter took my plate away with apologies. Another waiter returned with my plate about 5 minutes later. They actually returned the same burger and fries as before and of course now the fries were cold! I sent the entire plate back. If a kitchen cannot even cook a frozen black bean patty correctly I am skeptical of meals requiring any further skill. I too love many mexican restaurants in the area - namely Sabor al Mexico in Mukilteo, Blue Tequila in Bothell and El Paraiso in Everett - choose any of those restaurants over this one and you won't be disappointed. more

Better than Most other Mexican Restaurants 9/26/2010

As Mexican Restaurants go this far up in North America, the food is excellent. I've had the Shrimp Poblano twice now and the flavor of the shrimp is superb. \r However, This time I had the Seafood Burrito instead of having the Fajita's my wife ordered. I was afraid the Fajitas would turn out like so many other Mexican Restaurants, but I was wrong. The amount of Oil in the Skillet was very minimal if not non exeistant and the salt content was minimal as well which allowed the flavor of the food to stand on its own. The Crab in my Burrito was real for sure and the cream sauce was light and nicely seasoned much like the cream sauce on the Shrimp Poblano dish.\r The Service is superb. It's not stuffy, pretentious or over done. It's simply just right. The Hostess recommended sitting nearer the Bar area for a quieter dinner. In the course of dinner we heard why: There was a fussy youngster in the main part of the restaurant. She did that very tactfully. Seconds after our waitor went to another table to deliver a birthday cheer, another waitress saw we put the Menu's down and took our order promptly seeing the obvious: We were ready to place our order. The Owner/Manager (not sure if he's both or not) has greeted us personally everytime. My wife is on crutches and he even moved tables and chairs to accomodate us in a personal and friendly manner as if he'd known us for years. I got to tell him that Avocados is not a typical restaurant. Anyone can put Sysco out of a can on a plate and serve it up. It's easy to go with the flow and follow the formula of the norm. It's much harder to carve a notch for yourself with creativity. They are doing just that and have established our dedication as customers for years to come. I highly recommend this place to anyone that wants a casual dining experience in a lovely decor where the extra mile is gone to ensure not just another cookie cutter meal but an experience that just makes you feel comfortable and welcomed as an important person; not just another customer. more

Look Elsewhere 6/6/2010

We noticed there was a new guy was in town and decided to find out if they could measure up to our favorite Mexican restaurant located in downtown Everett. When we arrived around 7 p.m. on a weekend, parking lot was near full and contained a few high-end family cars. We walked in, interior lacked Mexican decor but had very nice natural wood paneling and foliage. Looked around, saw many stereotypical families with children. Staff appeared to be 100% Hispanic, and, overall, first impression was very, very good. We were seated in a booth and provided a high-chair for our little one but were unable to strap him in because the plastic attachment was broken. We were approached by 2 waitstaff, provided drinks, and quickly advised all other highchairs were in use. Our order was taken promptly, steak was specified medium-rare, waitress said, ""ok, medium"" but we didn't press it because we assumed she had it. The menu left off guacamole as an ingredient on one of the burrito dishes which at the time we didn't know. Our toddler son was so hungry waiting he ate all the bean dip. We began to wonder if they forgot us. They didn't notice our table had no flatware and we had to request them. When the food finally came, the steak was cooked wrong (medium) and our other dish contained guacamole which we didn't know and we had to return it and have it remade without it. We didn't replace the steak or complain about it, and when we received the remade burrito dish this time it had no olives, and we asked for a small dish of olives to replace the ones they removed. The burrito dish to me seemed overly salty and mediocre in flavor. The bean dip seemed to have way to much garlic flavor in it. Overall the flavor of all the food was very mediocre and really not that great. Since the pleasantness of the employees was pretty good and the service was mediocre (and at times terrible), we decided that we would never return and probably would not recommend this place to anyone. If you were wondering, El Paraiso on Colby & California is our favorite and so far no one has ever surpassed them. Cheers. Pros: Friendly Cons: Poor service, Mediocre Food more

New Mexican on Evergreen Way 5/18/2010

Restaurant recently opened on evergreen way in a location that was formerly a ski shop. Its very nice inside and has a beautiful bar area and patio. Patio is a great place to spend a sunny afterwork happy hour if you can block out the noise of the Hwy. No avocado margaritas though. Gaucamole samplers are listed on the menu, with 4 varieties to chose from including a chipolte and one containing bacon. Chips come with salsa and bean dip which is always a nice touch. Rice and beans are pretty good. Dessert includes an avocado and lime cheesecake. Still in the new stages so happy hour menus are not made up yet, but 2.50$ beer is hard to beat. Appetizers 2$ off. Pros: patio, large restaurant more
