Stay Away From This Vet if you have small dogs/cats 5/20/2012

I brought in my cat for a surgery. She was very scared by a large dog in waiting room. I was surprised to find dog was owned by staff. Dr. Moore was unconcerned about staffs pets scaring my cat. She was unpersonal and did not treat my cat with the care I would expect in a vet. more

Dr. Moore and his staff are most caring and capable. They go out of their way to accomodate their clients. My pets have always been cared for well. Dr. Moore goes the extra mile to exhibit kindness and gentleness to my pet family. Thank you Avalon Veternary for the years of excellent care and love given to my animals. more

Stay Away from this Unreliable & Negligent Place 8/18/2011

This veterinary hospital sells/carries expired medication and has sloppy staff. My dog needed eye drops for his dry eyes so I went to the vet to obtain the eye drops, only to discover later that the drops were expired. Recently had my dog put to sleep and asked for the ashes to return home but due to a staff's negligence to fill paper work correctly and thoroughly, my dog was mass cremated and I will NEVER receive his ashes back. more

Best Vet! 9/23/2010

I have been going to Avalon Vet for over 25 years and have never found a better place for my animals. Years ago (when I was a single mother with 4 children) we have quite a collection of dogs and cats and Avalon Vet made arraingments for payments plus the multi-pet discount! Anytime any of the animals is sick, they will make sure my pet is seen that day. My daughter moved to the eastend of town and found a vet near her new home...she's back to Dr. Moore! more

Gave me a hard time about a refill 6/3/2010

For the most part, I have had good experiences here but yesterday I called to get a refill for Metacam for my 13 year old dachshund and was refused the refill because another vet who worked there (who wasn't there that day) that had prescribed it didn't notate why it was prescribed in the record. After answering numerous questions from both the person that answered the phone and another vet and assuring both individuals that my dog is doing better since she started taking the medication, I was told to wait a few days and see if my dog's condition worsens before refilling. The reason for this supposedly is because the drug has side effects which can create more problems (don't all drugs though?). Bottom Line: While I appreciate the staff's concern, if another member of the staff had previously prescribed something that is helping my dog, I shouldn't be put through the wringer when I call for a refill. Pros: The Vets Cons: The People that answer the phones more

Best Veterinary Hospital in Pgh. 7/28/2009

The Avalon Veterinary Hospital staff has treated my pets for over 20 years. I have taken cats, rabbits, fish, and a turtle there. The prices are always very reasonable (cheaper than any other clinic in the area), and I have never been charged for follow-ups. Dr. Fitzgerald provided an affordable diabetes treatment plan for my cat to prolong his life from a few months to three healthy years. And when he suddenly went in to kidney failure and diabetic shock, I was only charged for the treatment--not the emergency appointment fees. The staff was extremely considerate when my cat passed. My other cat gained a reputation as a menace. But the staff was always accommodating and never complained--not even when she required 4 people to hold her down just to get her shots. When I was sold a diseased turtle a a child, Dr. Moore was very kind and did not charge for the visit or the medication. He recognized my interest in science, and patiently answered all of my 11-year-old questions and showed me how he made slides and how his microscope worked. (I would later study Biological Sciences and work as a laboratory technician.) Dr. Moore also took exemplary care of our rabbits, who all lived unusually long lives. I could give commendations of these vets and their staff all day--I highly recommend this veterinary hospital! Pros: Wonderful Staff, great prices. Cons: Small parking lot. more

Avalon Veterinary Hosital 1/26/2009

My son has lovingly apoted our dog Lefty. Dr. Bigger has been great with Chris but others Vets in the office have not. Chris works very hard but cannot afford expensive clothing and had comments made behind his back. Lefty has been back to Avalon at least 3 times and has not gotten any better, he has lost a great deal of weight and has stopped eating. I have done research and have notices he shows all the signs of Kennel Cough, which can be passed to other animals if it is viral. Chris has never been told exactly what Lefty's problem is and if he should do the humane thing for Lefty, and if what Lefty has is contagious to my other pets. Pros: Staff is Great with Owners and Pets Cons: Parking more

Avalon Vet Hospital is the best!! 8/12/2008

I've been using Avalon Vet and Dr. Moore's services for over 20 years. They have been wonderful to all of my pets. All of the Vets and techs as well have treated me, my parents and all of our animals with respect. Dr. Moore has a wonderful staff. There have been times where I've been unemployed and my cats have needed emergency treatment. Dr. Moore came in on a Sunday a few years ago, to help me because my baby was going to die. He treated her and she was better in 2 days. I couldn't thank him enough for helping me, all I could do was donate some food and toys to the animals. I appreciate all of the help (financial & medical) that he has given me and my cats. Pros: Very knowledgable staff, kind and compassionate Cons: Parking is sometimes hard to find, depending on the time of day more

Wonderful 8/8/2008

I recently moved away from bellevue and found a vet closer to my home. After being used to Avalon Veterinary hospital for so many years, I couldn't believe how expensive the other vets were!! I have decided it is worth the trip to go back! At the new vet, it cost $170 and my dog was only there for his annual visit and had no problems! So I switched back to Avalon, and last night I took 2 of my dogs and it was only $160 for both of them, and that included bloodwork and shots. If you are complaining about the price of this vet, all I can say is good luck finding someone cheaper. There have been times where I have had to bring a pet back for multiple follow up visits and they have not charged me one penny for the visit. And they have always been very caring and understanding when my pets were ill. My only complaint is that the waiting room is small, so when it is busy it is difficult to keep the dogs away from each other. Pros: Price, caring vets, friendly staff Cons: small waiting room, parking is sometimes tough more

Wonderful vet care! 4/15/2008

When my rabbit, Lily, was injured in a fight with my other rabbit, Dr. Moore took care of her wounds and prescribed a topical spray to be used daily. When I told him that she reacted badly to the spray, he gave me a cream and didn't charge me again - he just had me return the spray for office use. He scheduled her for 2 follow-up visits and I thought ""here we go - $$$"" but he did not charge for the 2 follow-up visits. I thought their prices were very reasonable, something I have found is not so with other vets. Lily has since recovered fully from her wounds and I will definitely call Avalon Veterinary Clinic the next time one of my pets requires vet care. Pros: Dr. Moore is a knowledgeable rabbit vet. Cons: Sometimes there is a long wait to see the vet. Once I waited an hour. more

Great Service 3/24/2008

I started taking my cats to Avalon Veterinary clinic about 4 months ago. Pros: Great staff, reasonable prices more

Dr. Joel Bigger is wonderful! 1/11/2008

I have been going to the Avalon Veterinary Hospital for years - they are wonderful! My vet, Dr. Joel Bigger, has taken care of many of my sick animals and he was very compassionate and caring. The only negative thing I can say is that as of January 2008 their rates are horrendous! I have 4 dogs that I take there and they have always given me a ""multiple animal discount"". I recently took one of my dogs for his checkup and I was charged $73.00! Granted, he did need both of his shots(that came to $26.00), but almost $50.00 for the check?? They didn't even take his temperature or offer to cut his toenails, clean out his ears, etc! I took one of my dogs in December for the same type of checkup and was charged $54.00 - they even charged me for ""hazardous waste disposal"" this time! Toooooo high priced - even though Dr. Bigger is great, I may have to find another vet so I can afford to keep my dogs healthy! Pros: wonderful veterinarian Cons: staff, price too high more
