Editorial review from Citysearch 4/2/2014

I have been going to Dr. Fehrenkamp for a while, and I love him and all of the staff. I have seen the 2 other Endocrinologist, and they were very rude, and or you were treated like cattle. I have recommended friends and family to Dr. Fehrenkamp, and they love him and the staff as well. The wait is worth it, because you get the their undivided attention once you get in the room. more

Wouldn't even see me 3/12/2012

Only after going around and around with the receptionist on the phone - because you apparently have to already have a diagnosis before they'll see you, and having a giant lump on your thyroid doesn't count as a diagnosis, because the doctor I need to diagnose me doesn't diagnose people??? - did it come out that they don't see you unless you have insurance anyway, so that leaves me out. That's pretty darn s!@#ty if you ask me. more

Not looking for a new endo. until Dr. F retires! 9/8/2011

As another reviewer said, Dr. Fehrenkamp is a little quirky (I guess I am, too, so I don't care), but I've been going to him for over 10 years and he really does care about his patients. Yes, I may spend some time in the waiting room (although this is not nearly as much of a problem since they moved to their new--and MUCH better--office), but once he's in the exam room with me, the first thing he asks about is my life: my job, my mother, etc. and he tells me about his family. AFTER that, we move on to business and he never rushes my questions or makes me feel like they're dumb. He stays up-to-date on the latest and greatest, and probably my favorite thing about his care is that he's not a dictator. He understands that living with diabetes is difficult and sucks and that I'm not a robot--and he doesn't expect me to be. My doctor when I lived in the Northeast was nice, but I always left feeling like I'd failed because my A1C wasn't good enough. Dr. F is understanding whilst trying to keep me on track, and that type of approach works best for me. Some staff used to be brazen at the old office location, but now, everyone is really pretty nice and pleasant, as well as more on top of things. I'm not sure why they moved, but I'm glad they did, as his practice seems to run much more smoothly now and everyone there seems to be much happier. So I recommend him if you want a doctor who is aware that his patients are human and are not just dollar signs. more

Did not have the experience these reviews mention 11/6/2009

I recently switched to Dr. Fehrenkamp and I did not experience a wait in the waiting room. He spent a lot of time talking to me about current medicine and reviewing the records I provided for him. I feel very confident in what he has recommended. I did encounter a less than pleasant girl on the phone when I called to make the appointment, but when I arrived they were all friendly and polite. Sorry that some of these people did not have that experience, but I liked him Pros: very thoroughly went over my records and meds Cons: encountered one unpleasant employee but not the Dr. more

Worst Endo in Austin! 10/21/2009

Dr. Fehrenkamp is the worst Endo in the city. He changed my wife's calcium med to a higher dose just from saying she has been low for a while. Well a few weeks later she is in the ER with a very dangerous calcium level and almost in a coma. The ER doctor paged & called him on Saturday night and Dr. Fehrenkamp just never called. Dr. Fehrenkamp did not ever call and we were in the hospital until Monday afternoon. When my wife called Dr. F on Monday they said they never received a call or page. Sort of funny when my wife gave the ER Dr the same number she calls Dr. F on??? When my wife did speak with admin at Dr. F's they were rude and said they never received a call. Even after all that, Dr. F never called to see if his patient was ok or allright or anything. He did nothing. The admin staff was rude and short on the phone too. He has a few good Physician’s Assistants is about the only good thing. The rest of his staff has the bedside manor of a pimp. Do not go to this Dr. Pros: none. has some ok P.A.'s Cons: unresponsive, makes reckless decisions on meds, rude staff more

Best Diabetes Doc in Austin 8/18/2009

Dr. Blevens has done a wonderful job of marketing himself to other physicians as the 'best diabetes doctor in Austin'; therefore they nearly all recommend him. However, I have been to both Blevins and Fehrenkamp and there is absolutely NO comparison. First of all, Blevins won't usually see you himself-- he almost always delegates to a Physicians' Assistant, and her remedies are straight out of the textbook (no customization for the patient). Fehrenkamp not only sees you personally, but takes all the time necessary and really, really knows his stuff. He will constantly adjust your meds to make them work properly for YOU. And...maybe most importantly, he really CARES about his patients MORE than the money! Don't let his handicap fool you-- this guy is a genius when it comes to diabetes treatment! Pros: Really knows his stuff and will spend time necessary w/ you. Cons: Sometimes the waiting times are waaaaay too long more

EXCELLENT Doctor - HIGHLY Recommend!!! 7/18/2007

Dr. Fehrenkamp is a wonderful doctor. He is very knowledgeable and spends plenty of time answering my questions and explaining things to me. I did have to wait quite awhile in the waiting room before seeing him every time I went, but he makes up for it by being very thorough during my appointments and I always leave there feeling like my questions have been answered and I haven't been rushed. He's also got a good personality, I highly recommend him. I do suggest bringing a couple of magazines or a book to pass the time and leave the kids at home :) Pros: Extremely Knowledgeable, Very Thorough Cons: Long Wait Time, So-So Office Staff more

Personable Doctor! 9/6/2006

Ok, so Dr. Fehrenkamp is kind of quirky, but he is very personable. The first time I went to him was on 9/6 and I didn't have to wait forever to see him. He was very thorough and spent a lot of time discussing my medical issues with me. I liked him! Pros: Lots of one-on-one time with the doctor Cons: He's not your average stuffy doctor with a stone-face demeanor more

Worst Experience ~ EVER 5/24/2006

I had gestational diabetes and was sent to Dr. Fehrenkamp by my OB. I waited 3 hours past my scheduled appointment to get back to a room, and this is normal for every patient on every visit. When I had a small problem keeping my levels level he put me on insulin which I did not need and they barely showed me how to give myself the shots. My blood sugars were dangerously low. Needless to say, I insisted to be sent to another doctor! more
