I have been passionate about art from a very early age, and my training as a professional artist taught me a true appreciation for art and how it is made. My undergraduate years at Virginia Commonwealth University as well as my graduate studies at the California College of Arts and Crafts included extensive studies in the history of art and art theory. In addition to teaching studio arts I spent nearly fifteen years as a curator and director of the galleries at Roanoke College, which included care of the permanent collection. In 1992 I created and implemented a juried biennial exhibition that drew artists from all over Virginia and beyond, and this exhibition is still in place today. Since 1989 I have taught the art history at Virginia Western Community College, a position I currently hold. This extensive experience in art has given me an eye for quality, an essential component for valuing art. In 2012, I completed a certificate program at the State University of New York at Purchase, developed and created by the American Society of Appraisers. In addition to the processes and principles of personal property valuation, the course work included methods of research, interpreting the research as it applies to specific objects, and an understanding of and an analysis the art market. The business of art appraisal requires determining a fair market value for art objects, suited to the needs of my clients, for the purposes of insurance, charitable contribution, settlement of estates and re-sale. My appraisal reports are legal documents, and are in compliance with the Unified Standards of Professional Appraisal Practices (USPAP).
