Hip, interesting, overpriced 12/27/2009

Exceptional decor and atmosphere in this hip downtown bar and restaurant. Creative concept and interesting menu. Food is well prepared and attractively presented. Service exceptional. But very high prices lend an expectation of food that would be more unique. If price is of no concern then recommended, but if value for money is important, then suggest you try elsewhere. Pros: Service, presentation, decor, atmosphere Cons: Price; lacking uniqueness in food prep more

Wonderful Evening 2/2/2008

There are a lot of bad reviews of Asia De Cuba so I went ready to be disappointed and was pleasantly surprised. We went earlier than normal for us for dinner - around 6:15 instead of the normal 8 or 9 dinner time so perhaps this was why our experience was so nice compared to others...? We were seated immediately, service was wonderful, they had good wine choices and our waiter, James I believe helped us a ton with the menu. We ended up only ordering about half of what we initially thought we would need and he warned us of the HUGE serving sizes and helped us avoid not eating half of our food and also helped to keep our bill to a much more reasonable amout than it would have been for a ton of wasted food. Everything we tried we really liked. Some of the dishes were actually a little too rich for just us, it would have been better if there were one or two other people eating with us to share, but that being said - rich taste is always nice. I was very happy with our meal and hope to be returning soon. Pros: good service, beautiful decor, yummy food Cons: pricey - but that should be known before even walking in more

i'm a harsh critic. 4/19/2007

what can i say, i enjoy fine dining everywhere from Supperclub - Frisson - Grand Cafe - Ponzu - you name it, + ASIA DE CUBA. i visited asia de cuba on my birthday last year and i found the food phenomenal. being that it was my birthday that day, i can be a veryyyyy harsh critic and picky; i can only have the best for my birthday. i do see some bad reviews re: asiadecuba but i found my experience the complete opposite, whree service is definitely great (joking waiters, sincere smiles) and deLICIOUSS food! i did not order what the person (who commented below me) ordered, my best friend who has visited asiadecuba many times ordered what she knows tastes the absolute best: the entree which had sticky rice on it (forgot the name), the chicken, + the ""jamaican me crazy"" beverage. i found all flavors to be consistent and fresh, surprising me by how delicious it was! i would definitely go back. to all citysearchers, make your own judgment and try not to be swayed by the bad comments. =] evryone's experience is different!. Pros: ambience, romantic dining, fresh food, great alcoholic bev., friendly staff Cons: none that comes to mind. more

AWFUL EXPERIENCE, DO NOT REPEAT MY MISTAKE!!! 3/16/2007

WHEN I SAW A 1000 POINT PROMOTION FOR ASIA DE CUBA ON THE OPENTABLE, I DECIDED - WHY NOT? I WAS WARNED BY COUPLE OF FRIENDS THAT IT IS OVERPRICED AND THE FOOD IS AVERAGE, I ALSO READ THE UNPLEASANT REVIEWS ABOUT IT, BUT I JUST COULD NOT BELIEVE IT CAN BE THAT BAD!!! I SHOULD HAVE ALSO BEEN ALARMED BY THE STAFF BEING SURPRISED BY OUR RESPONSE THAT WE ARE NOT VISITORS - APPARENTLY EVERYONE LOCAL SHOULD KNOW BETTER THAN COME AND EAT THERE. BEAUTIFUL SETTING, STAFF WAS VERY NICE, BUT THAT IS WHERE ALL THE PROS END! I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT IN SAN FRANCISCO, WHICH SUCH A COMPETITIVE RESTAURANT SCENE, A PLACE LIKE THIS CAN EXIST! TUNA TARTAR APPERTIZER WAS BELOW AVERAGE AND THE ENTREE ($95!!! COBE BEEF AND LOBSTER TAILS PLATE) WAS ALMOST UNEATABLE! THE WAITER DID NOT MENTION THAT LOBSTER WILL BE WRAPPED IN BACON(!!!) WHICH ABSOLUTELY RUINED THE TASTE OF SUPPOSEDLY SWEET AND TENDER MEAT. COFFEE IS $5 A CUP AND IS SERVED IN CHEAP 25-CENT CUPS. MANAGERS RESPONSE TO US SAYING WE HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE - ""I AM SORRY YOU DID, BUT, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF PEOPLE EAT HERE AND LIKE IT""!!! Cons: EVERYTHING!!! more

Asia de Cuba (a.k.a. TGI Friday's) 3/3/2007

This is the first review I've ever written. I was motivated to do something after this terrible dining experience. I can honestly say this was the worst meal I've ever had in SF. To be fair, this was lunch, so maybe they had the 2nd team chefs or the dish washers in the kitchen. Yeah, that was probably below the belt, but it was just a really disappointing meal. I started off with a mojito, which cost $13. For that price you'd think you'd either get something creative or at the very least be served in a 21ounce glass - you know what I mean? - instead, it was a little on the sweet side and more like 6-8 ounces. I went with the ""Cuban sandwich of the day"", which was the steak sandwich. Again, I was expecting something with some Cuban/Asian flare, but rather I got a plain USDA choice-quality steak on a bun with lettuce and tomato. It was bland, a little cold, and the meat too tough for $19. My wife had the fried calamari salad ($21). We could tell the calamari had been cooked several minutes before it was served as it was cold and the breading soggy. The salad dressing literally tasted like bubble gum... it was the weirdest thing. The service was okay, but then again there were only 3 occupied tables... that should've been our first clue. The menu reads great, but the chefs can't handle it. It just too bad Cortez (across the street) wasn't open for lunch... now there's a good meal!! Pros: None... seriously Cons: Food!!! and Price more

Good food and atmosphere, is you have $$$$ 2/14/2007

1000 pt reservation on Opentable help offset the cost. Hip restaurant w/ hip prices. The $30 butterfish and $9 coconut rice were really good, but don't have the 6 dumplins for $20. The food is large plates, so they are right when you need 2 apps and 1 entree (w/ rice side) for 2. $16 Desserts are huge too. The place is dark- so ask for reading glasses and mini light to see the menu. You can hear the conversations next to you and they can hear yours because the tables are so close together. There may be a few tables in the back corner that don't look so cramped. It's more like communal eating rather than a romantic meal. Like the other comments and Yelp say, go on someone else's dime and bring 3 others so you can try more food. You'll enjoy it a lot more. Pros: food, hip atmosphere Cons: $$price, noise, 1000pt opentable more

VERY DISAPPOINTED - Food mediocre - not worth the price - not even for half price or 75% off 1/1/2007

Went with my family on x'mas eve with a party of 8.....no special holiday decor - just a sad bowl of candy canes by the hotel check-in desk. We were crammed into a booth for five - three of our party were seated in chairs on the outside edge of our semi-circle booth. The table was waaaay too small for all of the food that we ordered (as recommended by our server), and you would think that they would have timed the food so that each dish would come one at a time....but no - we were frantically dishing out the food onto our plates and passing them around to make room for server to get all of the other food onto our table. He even just handed one of our dishes to my dad & said, here you go, and then left! My dad was left holding the plate until we could make room on our table!!! Service was poor, as we had to constantly ask for more water......no surprise, as with a party of eight, there is an automatic 20% gratuity added on. The food was just mediocre. The appetizers were better than the entrees, but really - how can you go wrong with the deep fried stuff??? Our lamb was COLD, and when we asked the server if it was supposed to be a cold dish, he responded - no, it's not supposed to be cold, but it may cool faster than the other dishes since it's thinly sliced. Then, he left.....no offer to re-do the dish or heat it up.....The duck dish was horrible - gamely and rubbery. We sent it back. After those two incidents, and after we decided not to order dessert, I think they got the hint and the server told us he wouldn't charge us for the duck or the lamb dishes.....All of the other entrees were really mediocre....nothing special. The plus of this place is really the ambiance. Even for that, I wouldn't return for the food, even if the cost was discounted by 75%. We were very disappointed after all that we've heard about this place, esp. since we decided to spend our holiday dinner there.....definitely will not go back. Pros: ambiance Cons: mediocre food, high prices, poor service more

Good for groups but... 11/20/2006

I like a good dunk in deep-fried food once in a while and ADC has a good fritto misto-type starter. Unfortunately, unless you go with at least three other people it's a bit of a waste. Ditto for the other dishes as they are huge; I'd expected very high quality given the prices but I got decent quality and humongous portions. That said, the drinker were generally good and we all had a very good time. Base on three visits. more

All arond good experience 11/1/2006

Up in SF on business. Took one of my customers there. Great food, great ambience, and most memorable was the service. My customer is a total JO and the server put up with him. I'd definitely go back. more

Adventure ride for the taste buds 10/26/2006

Ok, I was a bit sceptical of CRUNCHY wasabi mashed potatos, but wow...were they delicious! The Seared ahi and that went on top was also very good. Pros: Cool vibe, delicious food, chance to try many dishes Cons: can get a bit pricey more

Expensive, but if you have the money... 8/25/2006

All the portions are family style. The cocktails are all served in a cocktail glass, but are way too expensive for the size of the glass. The food is good too, but very expensive. My girlfriend and I had the lobster potstickers (amazing if you like lobster!), a fried rock shrimp speciality, and a side of panko crusted crispy plantains. We ate a lot and still had food left over. The bill with those three dishes and two cocktails came out to almost $90. The food is good, but not for that price. The atmosphere is nice. Dim lights, comfortable seats, etc. The crowd was mostly men and woman in their 30s and 40s. Pros: Nice atmosphere, reservations, cusine and cocktails Cons: Expensive! more

Best overall experience anywhere! 8/23/2006

I took my boyfriend here for our anniversary because many friends of mine had said it was THE place to go. First of all the restaurant has an amazing atmosphere. The decor and the music was perfect and we were sat at the amazing booth that was totally romantic. When we went to order, the waiter gave us suggestions that ended up making our meal perfect. The dishes are expensive but he informed us that they are meant to be shared, so we got an appetizer, a main dish and one side dish. The food was absolutely amazing! (and so were the cocktails). After dinner, we ordered dessert and the waiter warned us it would be large. It was gigantic, four people could have split this piece of cake, but we ended up taking it home for later. I'd have to say that this was the best dining experience I have ever had. Pros: Atmosphere, service, and amazing food! Cons: Expensive more

This place is worth a try 4/15/2006

After making the reservation, I was upset to read so many negative reviews. How could this place be so bad? Further inspection was required. Our waiter gave us the low-down of how portions are family style, which was good to know. The choices on both the app and main side of the menu were many, and difficult to nail down. We decided on the Thai beef salad and the duck app, followed by the miso glazed butter fish. All 3 were quite good, especially the salad and the fish. Presentation was impressive, portions were generous. The coconut banana cake that we had would have been perfect for a wedding cake. Huuge. Too much. How could we still fit in our clothes and still look good for the Redwood Room? In all, it was a great dining experience. Always good to prove the downers wrong. Check it out. Pros: Presentation, Wine list, food Cons: Enormous dessert, A little pricey more

THE FOOD IS NASTY...STAY AWAY!!! 4/2/2006

Didn't meet expectations. EXTREMELY disappointed. Go for cocktails, but that's all its good for. Portion and presentation well appreciated, unfortunately it's inedible-very bland. Lobster potstickers DOA (I see a trend). It's a shame I ate my side of coconut rice more than my entree-the Cuban Chicken. Food is mediocre! Like bad homecooking you had to eat to be polite. Quality that I expect was not there, fusion of elements were more like a science experiment, than delectable and tantalizing. I agree with fusion, but it just didn't flow. Some ingredients are not meant to go together. Server shouldn't be pushy and upsell. Annoying! His service couldn't compare to Levende Lounge, Bouchon, Postrio, Oola, Anzu and The Slanted Door. They strive for excellent customer service, that's what makes a customer return and the experience memorable. I tipped, but it wasn't well deserved. =( Pros: Ambience Cons: Food is gross, Pushy servers, Expensive more
