Best BBQ in San Mateo 12/16/2006

I never thought I would find such great BBQ in California. Armadillo Willy's is a great place to grab some BBQ and a great rest while your shopping. It is located in the Bridge Point shopping center near Target. You go in wait in line Order and they give you a buzzer for when your food is ready so you can go up and get it from the cook. So I was skeptical at first. However once I received my food my mind was instantly changed. It was with out a doubt the best BBQ I have ever had in California. I mean lets face it were not known for good BBQ. I ordered the ribs which I had to split with my husband who was already full from the burger he just devoured. The service could have been better and the prices were moderate to say the least but over all I feel I could recommend Armadillo Willy's to my family and friends. more

Great BBQ, dirty cups 11/17/2006

BBQ foods are great. But all the silverwares including cups and plates are kind of dirty. I got this cup which had a bunch of BBQ sauce in it so I exchanged for another one, but that cup got some other dirt in it. Overall, the place is kind of dirty, however, the BBQ foods is good. more

Armadillo Willy's BBQ 6/5/2003

This is a very popular restaurant. There is almost always a long wait, which is somewhat odd due to the semi-fast food nature of the restaurant. Prices are also a bit too high. As for the food, it is just okay at best. I would never use Armadillo Willy's BBQ to satisfy a BBQ urge. On the other hand, it is an acceptable lunch alternative to McDonalds or Burger King so long as you are willing to spend about nine to ten bucks for lunch and are willing to take a whole hour for lunch. more

better elsewhere.... 5/22/2003

As someone who was born in the south and has family currently living there, I can tell you that this is not Texas style BBQ. It's California style with a Texas label. If you want some seriously good southern style BBQ, try Roderick's Barbeque and Seafood in Dublin. Now that's some excellent BBQ!!! Pros: Good serivce Cons: crowded more

Good Ribs 3/24/2003

If you are not looking for atmosphere (and who is looking for atmoshpere in a rib joint) and you don't mind seating and serving yourself, this is a good rib place. Larger selection than some. Good beans. OK cornbread. Nice peanut cole slaw. more

Texas Back 40 Barbecue 10 Times Better 11/3/2002

We ate at an Armadillo Willy's BBQ down in the Santa Cruz area and was one of the most disappointing barbecue experiences we have ever had. The place couldn't seem to decide if it was a fast food chain or just a restaurant that didn't want to offer any service. I found the barbecue mediocre at best. If you are into quantity, they do give big portions. more

Best BBQ in the Bay Area 10/28/2002

The best BBQ I have found in the Bay Area. Good value and large portions. more

I really enjoy thier food, you get a lot for the money (good leftovers!!!) Pros: exellent ribs, lots of food Cons: usually very crowded more

Yuk!!!! 9/21/2002

After having been dragged to Armadillo Willy's the 2nd and 3rd times, I now refuse to ever eat there again. It is an insult to the term ""barbeque"". more

Not All That 8/28/2002

I too am a true Texan and ate my fair share of Texas BBQ. I believe that the good reviews from others and the top 10 rating for Willy's can be explained more by the lack of BBQ places in the Bay Area than by the quality of Willy's food. Store-bought BBQ meats are significantly better. The sausages and brisket I had were dry and tasteless compared to what I am used to. I can only guess that they started off with the wrong fat content (crucial for proper juicyness) and spicing, then improperly smoked the meat (do they even have a smoker?), and after this torture, the meat then sat under a heat lamp. There wasn't anything particularly wrong with the place except for the food, but that is, after all, what I went there for. Pros: Easy Parking Cons: Bad Food more

Close to TX bbq 8/13/2002

Other than Back 40 Texas Bar-b-que located in Pleasant Hill and San Ramon, Armadillo Willy's comes the closest to being ""TEXAS"" bbq. It it delicious. I enjoyed the chopped beef sandwhich and on another location the sliced beef. Their onion rings are great! Pros: Food, Inexpensive, Seating Area Cons: Location more

Great food, Fast Service, fun place 7/29/2002

The smoker is right up front - you can see where and how they cook their meats. The food is very tasty - the bbq sauce is on the side - so no trying to coverup what's lacking in the meat. They move large crowds of people through quickly. Their kid's menu works for my fussy children. They also offer food to go so you can order BBQ by the pound to serve up to the large party at home. Pros: good bbq, quick service, nice surroundings more
