When I went to sign up my son for kindergarten at our local school in Piedmont Unified, known for the ?best schools in the area,? I was a little nervous and unsure about this milestone my son was about to embark on. As I provided the necessary verification of my residency and began filling out the papers, I heard the school bell ring and my stomach tightened. The ringing echoed throughout the halls and buildings, bringing with it memories of too many kids on the playground, teachers too preoccupied and busy to notice you, and that overwhelming sense of being a part of a system that one so little could get easily lost in.
