In ShortBegun in 1908 as the University of Minnesota's Fruit Breeding Farm, the arboretum is now part of the university's Department of Horticultural Science. More than 40 plant collections sprawl over the 1,000 acres of public gardens that include a maple-basswood forest and prairie, as well as marshes, streams and fields. Weekends see families and couples enjoying the six miles of walking and cross-country skiing trails. Schools enjoy the educational programs held during the week.
