beach delight 3/29/2003

Philbin beach has the sand, surf and sounds that make the perfect peace of nature. Lobsterville beach has less surf and is an easier place for children to swim. Menemsha Pond beach has very calm warm water and is a great place to find horseshoe crabs and other sea animal life. Great sunsets from the cliffs or beach! Tourist shops just as you'd expect. Fewer people than down island. Pros: great beaches, incredible sunsets, you can escape crowds Cons: parking expense more

Magical 3/9/2003

If you've never been in a place so peaceful that the ocean echos against beautiful colored clay cliffs, while imagining you can actually hear the chants of ancient Indian tribes, then you have never been to Aquinnah. It is spectacular and magical... as long as you aren't with a bus tour that is passing by. Make a trip here by car or stay at one of the wonderful homes in the area. Explore... It is WELL WORTH the cost! Simply Magical! Pros: Serene, Beautiful, Great to Explore! Cons: Bus Tours, Must watch tide times more

Editorial
  • The Scene
The Aquinnah cliffs, which sit upon Wampanoag reservation land, present a riot of color created by the action of millions of years of erosion on sand, clay and gravel. The best viewpoint is from an adjacent hilltop, upon which sits a lighthouse, a cluster of seafood shacks and gift stores, and a few telescopes. Getting closer is not encouraged: the cliffs are a national landmark and climbing them or removing clay are both prohibited.
