Worst Pet Store Ever!! 4/30/2010

DO NOT BUY A PET FROM THIS PET STORE EVER!! I just bought a kitten from here two days ago and it is still int he emergency room with god knows what wrong with itI spoke with the manager and he acted as if he didn't even care of my situation. The vet said that this it was obvious this kitten was not fit for sale. DO research. This pet store has alot of complaints. IT SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN!!!!! i HOPE IT IS. My bill is now up to 1500 dollars. These people know NOTHING about their animals and what's even worse-they don't care. A refund will be expected and they can also expect a nice phone call from my lawyer as well. Please, if you care about animals, DO NOT PURCHASE AN ANIMAL FROM THIS STORE. i don't care if its a fish!!!! it will most likely float to the top of the tank upon arrival of you putting it in there. more

Awful Customer Service 4/24/2010

This used to be one of the best stores in the area for pet supplies. Now the products are dusty, unorganized, and you can never find a sales associate in the fish department to by fish. This is a shame that the owner doesn't use a good training program for their employees. more

Animals N Things 3/19/2010

This is one of the best pet stores that i have been to in New Jersey. The workers have answers to any and every question one might have to ask. I highly recommend this store, weather you are an experienced pet owner, or are getting your first pet. This is defiantly a great store to go to. more

shopped there for years 2/12/2010

Good: Loved their selection, prices were the best. Purchased a blue Doberman pup about 12 years ago. Healthy with the acception of kennel cough, the vet said it is the equivalent of the human common cold. Contagious like it, too. Lighten up people-easily cureable. How many people do you see walking around with colds?? TREAT it before it becomes something worse, like pneumonia. They could treat all the dogs, symptomatic or not, but that is not recommended, They don't do that for humans. Maybe I was lucky.. Bad: I doubt if I would purchase another pet from there. I did witness dirty cages, many times the animals were out of water and food. Animal prices were herendous in some cases. they should STOP purchasing from puppy mills if that is the case. Any thing other than kennel cough is unacceptable in a puppy.. Improvements: They should stop hiring kids for the animal care. Hire responsible adults who give a crap about the animals and pay them enough to stay. Let the kids they hire restock shelves, sweep floors and run the registers.. more

Do NOT support this industry! 1/22/2010

I was curious about a non-"commercial" pet store that has existed in the area for such a long time, and decided to visit. I was horrified by the conditions in which the animals were kept. The puppies were all covered in feces, the small animals did not have adequate water, and the cats were in cages far too small for them. There were dead fish in several of the fish tanks and they looked as if they hadn't been cleaned in days. Understandably, animals smell, but the store was rank with odor. I left, swearing to never purchase anything from this store. A few months later, I received a baby rabbit as a birthday gift from my brother. He unfortunately purchased the animal from Animals 'n' Things. The rabbit came with no information regarding it's sex or age. Its white feet were stained yellow from sitting in its own urine. No proper feeding instructions or any other care information was given. I did my research and began properly caring for the animal, which then suddenly died yesterday - ten days after purchase. The vet explained that the animal was most likely sick with parasites from the store and probably weaned too early from its mother. If you want a pet, PLEASE seek out your local shelter or rescue. There are tons of animals that need homes. Do not continue to support this type of negligence and cruelty. It is simply criminal. more

Consistent low prices & good supply 11/24/2009

They always have what I need for my dog at the best prices anywhere. (Batter than Petsmart) With the coupons in the local flyer, I save even more. I can't comment on the animal purchases, but I would never buy a pet from a pet store anyway. more

PUPPY MILLS 11/5/2009

I purchased a puppy from this horrible disgraceful store. Two days later my puppy was diagnosed with Girdia and Kennel Cough, two very serious and highly contagious dog illness. Chances are all the puppies are infected. I filed a state complaint and the states ASPCA whom I've spoke to sveeral times informed me that there in the top five in complaints for selling sick dogs in the state. Also I was informed they receive there dogs form Lambriar Kennels in AR which notably receives there sick puppies from a CJC kennels a known puppy mill. I will not return my pup to this hell hole because I know she will not get the proper treatment at Animals and Things. BUYER BEWARE or you will end up with countless dollars in vet bills like me. more

Great Place! Annoying comments 10/20/2009

Seriously, why would you write a bad review about this place if your dog died or something was wrong with it, its not thier fault? Everyone knows any pet store's animals are not 100%, also the sales staff has to make you aware that animals are not magical and try not to expect a lassy from the TV show, even purchasing from a breeder you cant expect the best, but hey some jersey people will just put anything on the charge card! My only comment to you all is regardless of the stupid dog problems, this place has been here for years! How the dumb governer or whomever allowed a "petsfart" to be installed by shoprite is just plain rediculous. You should support the local mom and pop place regardless of its design or looks, the place is massive and full of knowledge, way more then you would find from the place around the corner, come on jersey get it together, support something thats been in the community for years before they rip it down and put another bank or some stupid monstrosity. more

Arrogant Sales people 9/8/2009

Arrogant Sales guy made a fool out of himself today.I went in there to buy a Colombian Red Tail Boa. I saw that the sign said ColUmbian instead of Colombian, so I mentioned it to the sales person. For some reason he got jumpy and told me that it's spelled with a U and that the country is also spelled with a U. I then told him I was Colombian and that I assure him it's with an O. Anyways, for anyone wondering it is with an O and is commonly misspelled as ColUmbian instead of Colombian. After that incident my brother asked him questions about the snake and he immaturely said to ask (me) Mr. know it all. Quite unproffessional, typical of NJ. The end. more

very pleased 5/20/2009

My family purchased a West Highland Terrier at Animals & Things in 1999. We've never had any problems and our dog just turned 10 years old recently! We also used to purchase fish there and we always buy dog food there. We're big fans and will continue to shop there! more

2 animals with problems. 5/12/2009

My family bought a "golden retriever" here. On top of various health problems(mainly awful skin problems our vet said were not our fault. Especially on her poor paws), she isn't a golden retriever at all! She is a Chesapeake Bay retriever. They said the curls would "grow out". We bought a Chocolate Lab which lead us to suspect they get their dogs from puppy mills. She had many birth defects including hip dysplasia. She had such severe hip dysplasia her left leg wasn't even in the socket, and the right only 30%. She went though a horrible surgery and to this day has so much trouble walking. She also has severe eye problems. A&T offered to take her back and on the "down low" mentioned putting her to sleep for being "defective" and unable for sale to anyone else. How could you mention putting an animal that we'd already fallen in love with to sleep? And to call her DEFECTIVE?? I hate animals and things. I will never support them again. not even buying dog food. more

I <3 Animals N Things 1/1/2009

I absolutely love Animals N Things. Growing up, we bought our Pug from this store and had no problems. I've also purchased both of my chinchillas from Animals N Things, and the staff was very helpful about giving advice on how to care for them. Recently I purchased a Maltese puppy from A&T as a Christmas gift and he had a successful vet checkup. He's a healthy puppy and has really brought a lot of joy into our home. I highly recommend this store, as I have only had great experiences with them. more

Stay Away! 12/23/2008

Do not buy any animal from this disgusting place! My friend bought a dog for his son for Christmas here. It is a 12 week old Dachshund that he picked up this past Saturday. However, he ending up bringing the dog to his vet yesterday only to find out this dog had an upper respiratory infection, high fever and on the road to pneumonia. The vet stated what the dog has could not have contracted this sickness in the past few days but this has been going on for a while. The vet stated this and all of the other dogs in contact or near each this dog needs to be treated since this type of illness in animals is highly contagious. The dog was returned and money refunded, however, will they even take care of this dog now since they had the audacity to even sell a sick dog? Stay away and save yourself a headache! more

worst store ever 2/11/2008

I just checked it out and it was wall to wall dirt, the poor animals in dirty cages no food or water, filled with their own fecal. A couple was having one of the horrible employees show them a dog, he grabbed the dog by the neck and pulled him out of the cage, the dog urinated on the floor, none cleaned it up. I also saw other accidents on the floor from customers bringing in their own pets, no one that worked there seemed to care .I tried to email them about the mess and dissatisfying experience I had but there is no valid email. Also check the dates on your products a good portion of the items I looked out were outdated. DO NOT GIVE THIS STORE YOUR TIME OR MONEY more

Do not buy pets! 10/29/2007

Being a vet tech in the area for several years, I have seen many an unkempt animal from here. Their domestic cats are soo overpriced and they are sick on top of it. If you buy them it only leaves room for someone else to breed more dogs to sell them here. You are promoting a very bad market! Go to your shelter or rescue group if you want a pet. more

Animals N Things is a good store....Stay away from Petsmart 3/13/2007

I have purchased MANY pets from Animals N Things...from mice to dogs. I have NEVER gotten an ill pet from them. Ive never had a problem...and would recommend to anyone. Petsmart around the corner, on the other hand...I would never purchase from. I know may people who have gotten animals that have died soon after purchase. I even adopted a kitten from somone who worked at the Petsmart Vet...they had the kittens in the store giving them away. And it ended up having ringworm which we all got. Animals N Things = GOOD Petsmart = BAD more

Good and bad points 3/31/2006

This is a huuuuuge pet store. They have a great fish selection, and even carry saltwater fish, coral and invertebrates. I am a betta fish afficiando, and the fish here are beautiful, but not necessarily well taken care of. I have bought some fish from them and had to spend time nursing them back to health. Their supplies are very well priced, though. Great selection and cheap prices. They carry pet supplies for all different types of pets. Hard to park! more

Not to bad 11/9/2005

They have absolutely everything you could ever image here for your pets. Its a pretty big place. the largest pet store I have ever seen. They have a lot of animals there but quite often they look dirty. It ooks like they may be understaffed also. If there is something you are looking for a can not find you are likely to find it here. Not sure that I would buy a pet here. more

Good For Pet Suppies! 9/19/2005

Animals and Things is a good place to go to get food or a toy for your pet but not buy a pet. The pets didn't look healthy at all. It broke my heart seeing them there. The prices on the food were higher than the larger chains but for a quick pick-up or emergency this is the place to go. If possible I would skip this store. more

Good for accessories, not pets 8/20/2005

This place is pretty good if you are just going for some dog food, or a toy for your pet. However, I would never actually buy a pet there. The animals always seem unhappy, they don't look healthy, and the cages smell like they haven not been cleaned in a while. more
