I agree that Dr. John J (jr.) is a wonderful vet. My only problem with him has been that he mostly takes care of horses and is only available on Thursdays. He helped our dog with his arthritis and gave him holistic care. He is a great vet. The other vets here I would not recommend. I switched to them because they were local, but they do not give the follow up or concern as the place I go to now. Their saving grace is the front desk ladies that are very very knowledgeable and caring. After my dog was in for a minor surgery and teeth cleaning, she barely survived. Her temperature was too high and they cooled her down and then went down hill from there. We had to leave there and take her to the Animal Emergency Treatment Center afterwards because they were closing. Thank God for AETC and luckily they saved her life. She would have died. I met Dr. John J recently after having one of my 10 month old adopted kittens die suddenly of Lymphoma. Of course I took my other cat in immediately to make sure she was ok and Dr. John J. assured me she was. I was so excited to find a vet with the gentle wisdom of Eastern medicine and the knowledge of the current Western advancements.\r This is a Vet that truly cares for our animals that we all love like family. If you are looking for a vet..... look no further. Dr. Hanover (Jr.) is amazing.... I don't know Sr. however, I can imagine he is just as wonderful. more

I think people are getting Dr John R Hanover (the father) confused with Dr John J Hanover (the son). I have been using the services of the Animal Hospital of Gurnee for my 4 cats since 2000 when I moved to this area and I was previously very pleased with their service.\r \r Several years ago I had a cat that got out of the house early on a Sunday morning and was seriously injured. I called the emergency number and Dr John J (the son) was on call. He drove a great distance to meet me at their office.\r \r Today I had an older cat, who had a stroke about a year ago, that suddenly started having the runs with a lot of blood. He seemed uncomfortable because he doesn?t usually cry. Since their office isn?t open on Wednesday afternoons, I called the emergency number. Dr John R (the father) was on call and he returned my page. Even with hearing that I was a regular client and what was going on, he told me that I would have to go to an emergency clinic. Dr. Hanover is a 3rd generation vet which gives him the edge on many healing modalities. He is educated in both Western and Eastern medicine which is a wonderful mix and he always does what he can to help my pets heal in a gentle way. He has worked with me and my animals as well as my rescued animals and is always there to do whatever he can to help on all levels.\r Most recently he helped me to help my rescue cat who was in kidney failure extend his life comfortably by 5 years!\r When the day did come for him to pass Dr. John kept in touch with me all day regarding him and drove 60 minutes at 11pm to help him pass with dignity. I have been a horse owner for over 30 years and have had the opportunity to watch many different Vets. I choose Dr. John Hanover over all of them for many reasons. He is very knowledgeable both in regular Western Veterinary Medicine and alternative Holistic medicine. I can always reach him on his cell phone. Don?t have to go thru answering services, I get him directly. He has always been willing to meet my schedule and has been very good with my all of the horses I have owned and is willing to spend time explaining what our alternatives are. If we have an emergency he is right there! more

While I had my horse boarded in Barrington and Hampshire her vet was Dr. Hanover (now she's outside his travel area...darn!), and he was just incredible. Always very helpful and generous with his time even when he was on a tight schedule, he is a wonderful, knowledgeable vet able to make subtle diagnoses and come up with great treatment options. He specializes in natural and holistic approaches (which my horse and I both loved, I think), and he is certified in equine dentistry and chiropractics. The adjustment he did on my mare worked wonders for her back. I highly recommend him, whether you trail ride or show. more

This is a wonderful hospital with very reasonable prices. I had been going to a different vet for some time and the vet bills were just killing me. I was then referred to Animal Hospital of Gurnee through a local rescue group and have been very pleased. I know my furry kids are getting wonderful care and now I don't have to dread taking them in because of the cost!\r \r I only wish they were a little closer to me... however I AM willing to make the trip. more
