Good Food, Good Service 2/17/2009

Angel Fish is one of our favorite lunch spots. The food is very tasty and the service is good. We try and get several appetizers for the table to share but I'm always tempted to be a little selfish and order my own tempura - it's that good! The only disappointing aspect of Angel Fish, for me, is that they have very few vegetarian (lunch) options. Since the rest of the group eats meat etc., they don't really care about this 'minor' oversight! Overall, good food. more

Strip Mall Quality Japanese Food 1/3/2009

This was one of those restaurants for those not willing to travel far to get Japanese. The portions were small for the price. Not as tasty as other restaurants nearby. Atmosphere was nice-and service was above par, but go into the main part of Alameda for Japanese-it's worth the travel. Pros: Service was great-nice ambience for dates.. Cons: had a crying baby next to use...very difficult to enjoy-food was bland ...like eating at an old folks home more

Not what I expected 1/30/2008

I heard great things about this place, so I finally gave it a shot-as I usually go to Kai's in Alameda which is closed for remodeling. I was not impressed, though the food was good, it was not great. The sushi rolls were very small & the prices are not so good. Seating was plentiful, however we were seated practically on top of the two other couples in the restaurant....I really miss Kai's-will have to visit the Oakland location. Pros: fresh, easy parking Cons: pricey, squished seating, small portions for the price more

The single best place for Sushi in the East Bay 4/24/2006

Nothing compares to Angelfish this side of the bay. Taka, the owner and head sushi chef, has created a restaurant rich with all the things that make a restaurant memorable and worth repeated return visits: fresh, delicious, expertly prepared sushi and authentic Japanese dishes, a warm and welcoming staff, ambience that is both elegant and casual. Pros: Food, Service, Ambience Cons: None more

My favorite sushi restaurant in the East Bay 2/28/2006

I don't understand why people would wait over an hour to eat at another sushi place (that shall remain nameless but is located in South Shore). I would spend my time waiting to eat at Angel Fish instead! I believe Angel Fish first opened in the late 90's - almost 10 years ago and their sushi has been delicious consistently. I've heard friends who have taken friends/colleagues who are from Japan praise the sushi/sashimi at Angel Fish...you really can't get better compliments that that. Their non-sushi menu items isn't as extensive as some other Japanese restaurants. But, if you looking for a satisfying sushi meal, this would be my first choice. Pros: Great sushi, Easy parking Cons: Can get crowded, A little pricey more

A bit overpriced for average food 2/8/2006

Just your average Japanese restaurant, a bit pricey for its worth, but the only thing amazing was the mackerel! The best mackerel I've had anywhere, prepared in any way! The service was not so nice. Pros: mackerel Cons: service more

Fresh 3/11/2005

The fish is consistently fresh here, and specials are creative and flavorful. Try the spicy tuna salsa, a house creation in which spicy tuna is served on wonton wrappers. The salad is also uniquely tasteful. Prices are all right, but increase quickly when with a group. There can be a wait on weekend nights. Pros: Fresh, Specials Cons: Price more

Outstanding Sushi 11/1/2004

Better than Ebisu, as good as Kirala (and cheaper than Kirala, and less line than either place) this restaurant is a real find, and well worth the drive (oh, it's easy to park, too). They have a decent sake collection, inventive sushi offerings, and outstanding dishes from the kitchen. more

Food versus 'tude 7/20/2004

The sushi is top notch. As good if not better than Kirala's. The sorbet is a refreshing treat. Miso is wonderful. The salad is odd, ceasar with sushi? Pros: Sushi, Sorbet, Miso Cons: , Not a bargain more

Best Place in the East Bay 7/25/2002

This place is WONDERFUL!!! I love sushi and Japanese food. I will jump at any chance to try some, but the fish has GOT to be FRESH! And it definitely was here! Once, I was in the mood for some Agadashi Tofu, they didn't have it but had Agadashi Potatoes instead. Incredible The restaurant is a little on the small side, so don't go with a large group. There's a sit-up bar where you can watch him make your sushi. They are all wonderful and attentive. I've never had any problems with anyone. It's not really a romantic place- it doesn't carry that atmosphere like Kamakura does, but the food is much better. And I think the prices are better, too! Pros: Incredibly fresh fish, interesting options, delicious! Cons: kinda small/crowded more
