I had two surgeries at MVH on July 13 and August 14, 2009 as a result of a herniated disc and subsequent failure of the first surgery to correct the problem. My surgeon (Dr. Hugh Moncrief) only uses MVH and when I submited my insurance/PPO information, was assured by his office that all services would be covered. I was treated very well by MVH staff and my stay there exceeded my expectations. However, when the bills began to arrive for the treatments, I learned that Anesthesiology Services Network (the only anesthesiology services available at MVH) was not in my company's PPO and the amount of their invoices far exceeded the UCR rates that my PPO would pay. My PPO (United Medical Resources) did pay the UCR amount to them even though they were not in network but ASN refused to accept that amount for the treatment. Their billing company issued some demand letters threatening to turn the balance over to a collection agency which would negatively impact my credit reputation. I have been advised that MVH is required to advise me that I would be charged a higher than normal rate for the services and that I would have to sign something saying I would agree to accept the charges. I don't believe I signed anything like that. I did pay ASN under extreme duress but am now inclined to seek legal council on this issue.
