Editorial review from Citysearch 10/20/2012

I just came back after looking for a Marine dress blue white hat from this store and have never been treated so rudely in my life. The woman, as described in other posts, asked how much money I had to which I responded ""that's none of your business, do you have the hat or not?"" She simply couldn't be bothered saying ""I couldn't afford it."" I told her I could get it on EBay for 50$. She laughed and said ""This isn't the Salvation Army."" Then she proceeded to lecture me on how they are a business not a charity. I will NEVER go back. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 6/18/2012

This is a fascinating place to browse through - there's all sorts of macho military and law enforcement stuff from military patches to handcuffs, saps and more. True, the person behind the counter could sure improve her people skills but I think that's just the way she is, no rudeness intended. Get over it and check out this great place. more

I Love this Place! a real treasure 5/12/2012

This place is the real thing with hundreds of items, well organized and at fair prices. I snagged a pair of canvas boat shoes for $9.98. Saw the same pair at DSW for twice the price. Lots of display cases with unique items and the world's best knife display. Great camping stuff. Check out the leather bomber and motorcycle jackets! Found a new wool blanket for $29.98! \r Staff is helpful and goes the extra mile. more

How did I miss this place! 5/12/2012

What a find! Store is well organized and lots to see. Snagged a pair of canvas boat shoes for 10.98, saw them at DSW for twice the price. Knowledgable courteous staff. Only place I've found with a full selection of reasonably priced camping gear, display cases with real bayonets, machetes and knives. Check out the leather bomber and motorcycle jackets. Stuff there is real! Boot selection is limited, but top brands. more

Very rude service, AVOID 5/3/2012

I went in to purchase military dress pants today for my fathers funeral. The clerk asked me what price range. I had no idea, so said I was open. The clerk stated ""If you don't know, I'm not going to look all over for you."" I said it was for my Dad's funeral. The clerk said ""I don't have time for this"". How mean and cruel. more

Minneapolis WORST surplus store 2/25/2012

If there was an option for zero stars, that's what this one would have been. A store that doesn't open anywhere NEAR the time posted on its website, and posted here on Citysearch, is worthless. ESPECIALLY since if you want to visit the store, you must park downtown, which means you gotta pay ... Today (25 Feb 2012) I drove downtown and parked a block away from the store. I arrived at 10.30 am (it's a Saturday); I'd read enough reviews to know the owner wasn't all that dependable, so I expected to wait a few minutes. I finally gave up at 11.30 -- that's right AN HOUR after they said they'd be open. Frankly, that recent review from Jan 20, 2012 sounds like BS to me. I have actually been in the store before ... fortuitously I happened to be there when the door was actually open. The store is well-stocked, this is true ... but the ""clerk"" was anything but friendly. She was aloof and didn't bother to try to answer the one simple question I asked her. I'll tell you what, if I am ever lucky enough to get inside the store, I'll make sure I stick around and force the owner to force me out ... she doesn't mind wasting people's time, I don't mind wasting hers. Thanks for nothing, American Surplus! more

Navy Pea Coat 1/20/2012

I went with the sole purpose of finding an authentic Navy Pea coat for my son for Christmas. The store was well stocked with many options. I found the clerk to be quite helpful and knowledgeable. The coat didn't fit so we brought it in for exchange. No hassles and the proper size was available. And, because the sleeves were a little long, tailoring was complimentary! more

Best Place For Costumes in Minneapolis ! 12/8/2011

My nephew was given the role as Christopher Columbus for his school play when I was visiting my sister in Minneapolis. We popped into American Surplus Store and found the cutest hat and full costume for him! The selection on supplies at American Surplus Store is amazing and endless. Highly recommend it! more

A Must See in Minneapolis One of the Last of its Kind 10/22/2011

The perfect place for families, sportsmen or business managers. Nicely displayed and fair priced clothing, boots and accessories. Check out the case at the rear with the leather bomber jackets and flyer's jackets. Lots of kids clothes and toys as well as camouflage bdus for paintball or hunting. I picked up a pair of waterproof insulated winter boots that were as light as a feather. Only place I've ever seen with cases of military and hunting knives on display. Paracord in 30 colors. more

unbelievably rude woman on the phone 8/25/2011

whoa. i called and asked a question about tent stakes, and this extremely rude woman answered with sarcasm, anger, impatience, and a tone of voice that could kill kittens. for asking whether or not they carried tent stakes!\r \r unreal, really, that someone like this has a customer service job during a recession.\r \r i won't be shopping there, ever. more

Woman working there is mental 2/22/2011

The woman working there must have some kind of psychological illness. All I did was try to give her some business, but I was treated very rudely for no reason. more

Terrible service, isulting staff 10/13/2010

Went to buy a pair of navy sailor pants for a theatre piece I am working on. The woman at the counter refused get them for me or direct me to where they were in the store. She misquoted their posted return policy, saying it was a ""few days"", instead of 30 as was posted. She refused to believe that I was not secretly using these for a Halloween costume, despite the fact that I said I would return them unworn within the next few days if they did not work out. She also argued with me about what size my actor wore, and then told me I wouldn't want them because they were too expensive. I will be ordering these online. The headache of shipping is nothing compared to arguing with that crazy bitch. more

Helpful Service and Good Prices 10/13/2010

I was weary to go to either American Army & Navy Surplus or General J's after reading some of the scathing reviews posted here and considering the venture of driving in downtown minneapolis. But I was pleased to find getting there wasn't bad and I was able to find street parking easily. I was able to find a basic shirt coat that worked for the show I was costuming and the woman working offered to go to the basement and pull the smaller size I needed. When she returned she had the basic I'd asked for along with three other interesting coat options in my price range. I ended up choosing one of the coats she'd grabbed for me for my show and keeping another of them for myself because it was so cool and she was willing to knock the price down for me. Having never shopped for Army surplus before I thought the prices were pretty low, with plenty of things for $30 and under. more

Never Again! 4/6/2010

I would not send my worst Enemy to this place! I spoke with a woman, who knows what her position was there? Owner or manager I Assume. Maybe the Store Buyer? Very Rude and obviously could not tell a Ruck sack from a Sea Bag. Really out There. A Real B!tch! Don't shop there People, Unless u Like Rude, Crappy Service! Pros: Nothing Good To Say! Cons: The Lady was VERY RUDE! more

A Place for Zombies! 11/15/2008

Zombies will love this place for costumes and gear. A favorite for Top Gun Flightsuits for Halloween, Lots to look at, fair prices on clothing, boots and gear and great costume ideas. The staff is friendly and helpful and will get you a great fit. They even give you parking money. \r Easy to find off 394East at the 4th Street exit. Go one block and its on the left side of the street. \r Lots of patches, belts, pins, flight suits, camouflage, hats, caps, air force goggles, vests, printed t-shirts, hunting nets, hunting knives, Ka-Bar, Ontario, SOG, sailor hats, sailor suits, camping accessories, wool pea coats, parkas, ammo cans, leather bomber jackets, brass knuckles, throwing knives. I love this store! A real store, not a Shopping Mall clone. Pros: An Authentic Army Navy Store Huge selection Cons: Only open until 7:00pm during the week, rather than 9:00pm more

Do Not Give These People Your Business! 10/30/2008

I have been here on two occasions and have been treated terribly both times. They make you feel as if you're not wanted there. And, almost worse, the staff berates and argues with each other right in front of you. They have no respect for themselves or their customers. I will never return. It's honestly an awful place to go. more

Beware of the Dog 6/5/2008

There should be a sign of the like outside the store.I called about a pair of Union Suit Long Johns and the person on the phone was very curt with me.I asked if she had a large in stock and she insisted I'd need an XL or XXL.I went to the store and asked for the undrwear, she only had 3 on the rack. All were oversized and when I held one up to my body and showed how it wouldn't fit she coped an attitude.Origionally she said she'd go look in the basement but suddenly turned outrageous, said she didn't need my business and to get the hell out of her store.I told her I called eailer and she said she didn't care and to get out now.She was so out of line,so unprovoked, there was no reason for her behavior. She wasted my time and a drive into downtown, totally offending me to boot. Cons: Awful treatment by woman behind counter more
