I have been coming to Alta Rancho Pet and Bird Hospital for the past 3 years with my English Bulldogs and my kitty. I have always found the doctors and staff to be very friendly and knowledgeable. They explain way more than the other vets I've gone to in the past. Dr. Shufer seems to be particularly experienced with Bulldogs and helped our pets breath easier with a high-tech laser surgery. \r \r The staff are very attentive and treat us like friends. The prices are on par with other vets I've gone to. I appreciate that they always give me an accurate estimate for their services and are willing to discuss alternate plans when finances have been stretched. \r \r I've been to many vets in the past, but I think Alta Rancho Pet is the best I've been to. I highly recommend them. more

Great Vets! 9/15/2012

We brought our cat here about nine months ago and the staff treated him great! The doctors were very knowledgeable, especially Dr. Henderson. Our cat was back to his normal mischievous self in no time. The office called back several times just to make sure everything was going OK and one of the vet techs even remembered him by name upon seeing him when we brought him back in. That's the kind of staff I look for when treating my furry friends! more

I can't tell you how greatful I am for Dr Shufer & his staff. After spending endless stressful hours and way too much money at Bansfield, I found Alta Rancho Pet & bird hospital. The minute I walked in I knew this was going to be a great experience ! I felt relief ! What a great staff ! Doctor & Staff are all very Caring, knowledgable... & extremely helpful ! Dr Shufer is a warm & compassionate human being and a because of this is an amazing doctor. Plus Rachel handled an emotional & stressed out mama ( me , lol ) with genine kindness & patience ! And the love that this Dr. & his staff have for animals is reflected in the prices. I was AMAZED at how reasonable their prices are ! The cost of Elvis 's visit for what was accomplished was a Blessing and 1/3 of what Bansfield charged for a lot of nothing. God Bless for taking care of my Elvis ! Drive 2 hours from San Diego & love this clinic! 7/24/2010

Drs. Shufer and Henderson are the best veterinarians we have found. We only take our pets (2 dogs and a cat) to other doctors when we aren't able to make the trip to see them. They are extremely talented and knowledgeable vets; have a friendly and skilled team; and genuinely care about our animals. We highly recommend Alta Rancho! more

Excellent Vet for Cats! 7/16/2010

My cat Sparky just turned 18 years old. I took her to see Dr. Shufer at the recommendation of a friend, who had excellent care with both of her dogs. I was so glad I did. He did such a thorough exam and showed more knowledge of cats than any other vet has in all of my 40 years of cat guardianship. Along with her slight asthma he found a problem with her blood pressure and now after treatment she is like a kitten again. I want to highly recommend Dr. Shufer to all. more

My experience 3/12/2010

I have seen my fair share of vets considering I have had several pets, but when I found this doctor, I decided to stay and stop changing vets. I read a poor review here talking about an unfortunate event with a cat, the cat died on the operation table and the owner wished he/she had listen to his/her heart instead of the doctor, who knows who was right, but I had a similar experience today, the doctor recommended a test I didnt agree with, so he gave me other options, I took one of his options and it worked. He worked with me and my options, his idea of getting more tests wasnt bad just not inside my budget at the moment, but it was good to know he wasnt after the money and gave me another solution that in this case worked. In the future I will consider the doctor's first option, extra tests are never bad even when things with your pet arent critical. more

My dog has never been the same since they did surgery on him. Despite new three year vaccine guidelines, they insist on annual vaccines. Money hungry office. Think twice before you entrust the care of your beloved pet to these people. more

Great Pet Hospital 1/21/2010

Approximately 2 years ago I took my Canary in to Alta Rancho Pet & Bird Hospital with a serious leg problem. The band was too tight and was causing the leg to swell, therefore, causing the band to cut into the leg. Dr. Shufer operated on the leg and removed the band and 2 years later my canary is alive and healthy. I was amazed because a bird's leg is very, very fragile. I have always found Alta Rancho Pet & Bird Hospital to be very friendly and caring. more

FOUND A LIFETIME VET 9/24/2009

I took my cat in for vomiting/severe diarrhea/not eating. Initially I took him to VCA Central Animal Hospital, they couldn't telll me exactly what was going on, after racking up $2500 for 4 days stay with nothing but basic medication. My cat was surviving on IV and vitamin shots for close to 5 days at that point. \r \r Dr. Henderson right away asked me "Do you use hair ties?" She pointed out CPK number on his blood test being high could indicate internal damage, possibly a hair tie he swallowed made a knot in his small intestine and tissue around there started dying. \r \r She said "If it was just a bug in his stomach, he should have been better by now. With his age and his condition got worse in 1 day, cancer is unlikely"\r \r It made perfect sense to me. \r \r She recommended an emergency surgery before his small intestine ruptured, so I paid $1800 for 5 days/4 nights stay, medication, X-ray, a follow-up appointment, and suture removal. Alta Rancho Pet & Bird Hospital is world class! 9/17/2009

I have been bringing my two dogs to Alta Rancho for 7 years and have found them to be an outstanding facility. The doctors and staff are very personable, thorough and caring. They are very informative and answer all of my questions in detail. I have worked with both Dr. Shufer and Dr. Henderson and find them both excellent vets. Perhaps more important, both of my pets really like them! They explain their treatment plans to me and always explain the fees up front, including me in the decision making process about my pet's care. I would highly recommend Alta Rancho Pet and Bird Hospital to anyone who really loves their pets and wants the best for them. more

This is THE place to take your animals! 7/15/2009

I have NO idea what the prior reviews are nagging about. I took my recently adopted Chihuahua, Sonny in because his shelter administered neutering opened up and he was all infected. The Dr took him into surgery ASAP and fixed the problem promptly, thoroughly, kindly and compasionately. The staff was talkative and kind, empathetic and very professional. I would recommend this hospital to all my friends and family! more

My pug's love their vet! 5/13/2009

I have three pugs that are patients at Alta Rancho Pet Hospital. The youngest one recently had a hip injury in which surgery was our only option. Dr. Henderson and Dr. Shufer were very helpful with diagnosing his injury. All of the staff where very patient, loving and kind to our baby pug during his stay at the hospital. They have also treated another pug of ours that had some breathing problems. Since then she is much happier and can breath easier. We recommend them to anyone looking for a good vet. more

Heartless!!! Money hungry!!! And NO bedside manner.... 5/13/2009

I just bought my 6 mo puppy (23lbs) in because he ate grapes and I was told they're toxic to dogs. They enduced vomiting, told me all of the horror "what if's", then hit me with an $1100 bill (incl a boat load of tests that have NOTHING to do with the condition they're concerned about). She said he needs to be on IV fluids for 72 hours (ASPCA website RE: Poisoning, says 48 hours and only AFTER it has been established the kidney's are compromised). I guess they tacked on an extra day for the money. When I informed the doc I don't have $1100 and asked what can I do? She told me that it's the only way to save my puppy's life and if I want to try and get him to drink water, pedialite, etc. at home and hope his kidneys function I can do that. But if he starts to show signs of kidney failure, she said "Then we know we've lost"... WHAT?!? THANKS DOC!!!! THE STAFF SUCK 4/1/2009

They are as about as compassionate as my big toe! Doctor seemed ok.. I WILL NEVER GO BACK!T he staff at this place pardon my expression they SUCK! they are ruthless/expensive,, telling me I have to bring my 23 year old cat in just to get her amoxicillin chargeing me $52.00 plus med..we are not first time customers, so I went to a new vet with a polite caring staff,,,, DO NOT GO HERE! o they charged me $40.00 at the other vet,,I will tell people to use Upland Vet Hospital...on grove. more

Accessible and Friendly 2/10/2009

I have been bringing my pets to Alta Rancho Pet and Bird Hospital for the past twelve years. It is relatively easy to get an appointment and most of the staff is very friendly. I have thankfully only needed to use them for routine check ups and vaccinations. They sent my family a very nice sympathy card after they put my dog to sleep due to old age. As a full time student now, they are very pricey compared to other clinics. A great benefit is their vaccine clinic, they do not charge an office visit for vaccinations when you bring your pet in between those hours! more

Best Vets Ever! 2/4/2009

My Pomeranians have been patients at Alta Rancho Pet & Bird Hospital for over 6 years. The doctor's have literally saved my dog's life twice. My older Pom has heart disease and is taking multiple medications.. I have hunted all over the internet for a lower price for the medications but I can't find better price anywhere. These doctor's treat my "daughtetrs" with tenderness and love. They strive to keep costs as low as possible even though they have the most up to date medical facility I have ever experienced. Good, quality service 12/16/2008

Selecting a new vet after moving to the area can be a challenge. My only experience with a vet had been in a stand-alone facility set up like a human's clinic with the waiting room in separate area from exam rooms, kennel areas and other areas of the hospital. To find a vet in what is best described as a strip mall made me a bit apprehensive about their ability to provide quality care. Alta Rancho Pet offers daily vaccination clinics so I decided to check them out when one of my dogs needed vaccinations. I was pleasantly surprised. I was treated with kindness and respect and my dog loved them (ok, she loves everyone!). The staff was very friendly and the facility seemed comprehensive. When my elderly dog became very ill and needed to be hospitalized, the vet kept me informed of his condition and treatment options. Although my dog passed away a couple of days after coming home, I felt that the staff did everything that they could. He was not the most cooperative of patients and the staf more
