Entertainment Venue 5/3/2006

The Allstate Arena is home to many cool events. Just to name a few, I have been here for concerts, flea markets, and a carnival. They also have many sporting events and other things too. The stadium is huge and it has ample seating for a lot of people. The only thing I really get frustrated about here is that the parking can be a pain here. It's pretty expensive for one and then there's always a huge line so you end up waiting almost a half hour before you can get in or out. more

Horrible Parking 4/30/2006

I am not a fan of parking lots and this is my least favorite one. I love Allstate, formerly Rosemont Horizon for concerts. I have to say they have a bit of a parking situation though. They have parked the cars 3 rows in the past and they actually tow the car in front of you to get you out. More recently at a sold out show they parked the cars in rows of 4 and 5, luckily we were on an end. I could just imagine what others had to go through. more

From Springsteen to Roxy Music, I've seen it all here! 4/3/2006

This is a special place to me because I have been able to enjoy some great concerts at the Arena. I was one of the first people to go here when it was it used to be called the Rosemont Horizon. For those of us around during that time, do you remember shortly after the place was built that part of the roof would fall in on people? Sounds like fun, doesn't it?? I'm not joking when I say that people used to wear hard hats and joke that the bands literally brought the house down. Ha ha! I have great memories of my first Springsteen concert, to the Roxy Music reunion tour (Bryan Ferry is still a hottie!) and The Police and Eurythmics. It looks so much better inside now than it used to. I have been here to see the circus too. You can't beat the location (right next door to a strip mall, restaurants, Target and so much more). Just know ahead of time that if you even THINK about sneaking into the free strip mall to park your car, the Rosemont police will be more than happy to give your vehicle a free trip to the pound more

Home of many events 8/20/2005

The Allstate Arena, formerly known as the Rosemont Horizon, hosts a multitude of events. Multiple sporting events are held at the arena, such as hockey with the Chicago Wolves and college basketball with the DePaul Blue Demons. They also hold WWE wrestling events. Multiple concerts use the Allstate arena as well. It's on the older side, but it's easy to get to in Rosemont, right off of the expressway. more

  • Chicagoans have always referred to their local arenas and baseball fields in reverential terms. Chicago Stadium was the lady on West Madison Street, home to Bobby Hull and Michael Jordan. Old Comiskey Park was the "Baseball Palace of the World," providing the South Side with Disco Demolition Night and Andy the Clown. And Wrigley Field is spoken of in such cuddly, sugary tones that it hardly matters which players are on the Friendly Confines' diamond (well, let's not go that far).

However, when it comes to the Rosemont Horizon (which was renamed the Allstate Arena in June 1999), Chicagoans view it as the annoying, monotonous relative whom they are forced to endure at family functions. The Allstate Arena is breathtakingly unremarkable, sitting in the middle of a huge parking lot with a backdrop of weathered apartment complexes. The structure is a pale gray slab of concrete with navy trim. Jets come perilously close to the it's roof on their descent into nearby O'Hare International Airport, providing the only interesting visual effect.

What the Allstate Arena has in its favor is a rich history of hosting some of rock's biggest attractions. Before the United Center and World Music Theatre were built, it was basically the only venue around for major acts to play, particularly during cold-weather months. The Who, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen and the Grateful Dead are a few of the classic rock artists who have appeared there. Allstate Arena has also hosted many modern rock performers including REM, Peter Gabriel, U2, Smashing Pumpkins and Oasis.

Unfortunately, a great band can become maddeningly average in the sterile setting of Allstate Arena. Generally, the acoustics are horrendous; the drums and bass tend to ricochet off of the walls, drowning out guitars and vocals in the process. At times the music sounds like it is coming through a neighbor's apartment floor rather than the stage. The quality of sound obviously
