I just recently signed my chidren up for this and it is a RIP OFF!!!!! I am so disappointed in this place. The lady that helped us sign up seemed very nice but I soon found out that it was all about money. I asked at the inital sign up about why did we have to purchase equipment right away and I specifically asked are they going to use it at the first class I was told yes. We have been here a month and 1 week and i still have not receicved all of the equipment and the stuff that we did get my children haven't used it not ONCE!!!! This is very disappointing and outrageous to take people money like this! They are about to have What they Call a Graduation Ceremony her Soon and now im hearing that I basically have to pay for my childs trophy and upgraded belt that i was told in the beginning that they would earn. If they are earning this stuff then why am i paying more money on top of my monthly FEES!!! I advise anyone to stay away from these people at all cost. They make you sign a contract and you are stuck with them not explaining everything in detail. I didn't know that they get your bank acocunt number write it down and the money is deducted out of your bank account monthly. The mananger or owner or whatever she is is a pain!!!! STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!!! more

I am a widow who thought signing up with ATA Martial Arts would be great for my daughter, but in the end, she just can't do it. Her mental and emotional state won't allow it. I paid for two years up front. Now I find out, they won't even return part of that. I feel that they have taken advantage of my need to help my daughter and now when we need to stop, we need that money back we can't even get a partial refund. What kind of people take advantage of people in fragile states and then abuse them further. IT's heartbreaking to me and my daughter. That money would have helped us pay for much needed health insurance and medications. Now we just have to pray for some other miracle. They said they could only do a refund if she could not continue because of moving or some sort of medical reason I think her mental and emotional state should be enough. I do plan to pursue this with any official in the State. This is terrible and should be stopped. more

ATA is poison! Do not sign up there. They are sales/marketing people, not martial arts instructors with integrity. The Lee family has found a brilliant way to franchise and sell martial arts and play on parents desire to have their children excel. Spoiler alert! Everyone earns a black belt at this factory as long as you have the money to pay for it. All the negative talk you hear about ATA is true. The positives are temporary. more

Stay away from this MONEY PIT!!! 5/7/2012

The karate classes are ok. The kids learn some things, but I'm sure they can learn somewhere else without paying thousands of dollars. They will try to trick you into signing a contract. Some contracts are as long as 36 months! The small print says you can't get out of it unless you die or are severly disabled. They talk you into buying equipment (swords, etc...) Its mandatory for the leadership classes. No refunds, of course. I had a 3 year old and 5 year old in classes. They never once used that equipment! And it costs hundreds of dollars! Super expensive. If you are military they tell you with a copy of your orders they will let you out of your contract. They have made this a nightmare experience for me. After I gave them a copy of my military orders, the front desk clerk, Ms Walker tried to tell me there was an ATA location 20 miles from where we are moving to. The DC area; obviously clueless about the hours long traffic situation they tried to hold that over me, because the contract says they will only let you out of the contract if you are moving more than 25 miles away from an ATA. Then they said they require 6 weeks notice. 6 weeks of me paying my money without my kids going to class! I have also returned the equipment that my kids never once used..and so far they are refusing to give me a refund. The worst part of all is that the manager, Ms Reynolds, wont' return my phone calls. I've called them or visited them everyday demanding a refund since April 25th. And she still hasn't called me to discuss. And another thing, although the kids learn some things, their process for graduating them to new belts is really based on time. If they've been in the class a couple of months, they charge you an extra $60 and give your kid a higher level belt. They call it ""testing"", but there is no real test. My 3 year old who mostly just played around in class was set to graduate to Camoflage belt by the time I got fed up with it. Just every couple of months when they feel like charging you $60 the kid moves up to a different color belt. Big time waste and Money Pit! Trust me, stay away from this place!!! more

My getting Black Belt was one of the most exciting days in my parent?s lives. I?ll never forget the look on my dad?s face. He Said ?if you can do that, you can do anything.? And he was really, really excited. My mom was just in tears. It was an incredibly exciting day for her too! Go to ATA Martial Arts! more

Avoid this place! 6/26/2006

What can I say. When I brought my 2 children to this karate school, I thought that they would get a quality and nurturing education in martial arts. For the trial period, it appeared as though this would be a great place. They gave lots of personal attention to my kids and praised them at every opportunity. Then they told me how much it would be. They wanted me to sign a 36 month contract and it was going to cost over $150/mo for my kids just for the lowest program they had. When I talked to other parents there, they told me that once they signed the contract, all of the personal attention and praise went away. It was almost as if the staff thought that they had ""bagged the game"" and went on to signing other kids up. Pros: Good facility; well kept Cons: Value; class size is too big; inconvenient schedule; few classes per week; must pay extra for everything more
