Algusto Mexican Restaurant

Algusto is my absolute favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. The service is always excellent, the food is super fresh, and the atmosphere is festive and inviting. The Mexican food at Algusto isn't the overly greasy type that you find at some places; it's much more fresh-tasting and flavorful, always well presented and in a timely fashion as well. Algusto has several tasty vegetarian options (try the Veggie Algusto-Style Burrito!), and the guacamole is among the best I've had. The salsas are out of this world, especially the Hot, a smooth salsa with a nice bite (I'm addicted to this stuff). Everyone I've taken to Algusto has raved about it and ends up going back again and again. No wonder they've won so many awards! more

I am always delighted when our plans take us to Algusto. What a difference this restaurant has made! We particularly enjoy the Hot and Extra Hot Salsas(!) , guacamole, the Algusto Salads (freshest fruits and vegetables hand selected by the owner) and the posole. Very few restaurants - and no other Mexican restaurants that I know - pay such close attention to serving fresh vegetables. The interior of the restaurant is very unique. We enjoy our meals there and feel as if we have visited with special friends. more

This place is garbage. Period. The service is weak, the food is average, and the prices are not in line with the product. Trust me, I've given it a few chances. I always like to ""give people the benefit of the doubt"". However, on one of my visits to the restaurant, I walked out before I was even seated. . . because it took them at least FIVE minutes to recognize that they had guests waiting at the front door. I have given this restaurant two opportunities to impress me, and I have been severely disappointed on both occasions. My husband and I first visited Algusto?s a few years ago when it first opened. The service was horrible. So horrible, in fact, that I refused to return. Last month (Jan. 2007), however, we returned out of a need to find a quick restaurant close to downtown. After the experience, I once again am vowing to never visit this restaurant. I ordered the tacos (almost $10 for two tacos with a small scoop of rice), which were average. The waitress asked if I would like cheese and sour cream, and I told her that I would indeed. She brought me two one-ounce plastic cups of each side item. I also asked for lettuce for the tacos (as none was provided with the meal). She proceeded to bring me another plastic one-ounce cup of shredded ice berg lettuce. Imagine my surprise when I received the bill and saw a charge of $1 each for the cheese and sour cream, and 50 cents for the lettuce (without having been told about the extra charges before being offered or given the items). I can run to the local grocery store and purchase an entire head of iceberg lettuce for less than a dollar, but this restaurant felt the need to charge me a thousand times this price for just a taste, as if the small fortune for two ground beef tacos was not enough! I love this restaurant - the food is authentic Mexican and fresh. The owners and staff give great service and really care about the quality of the food and your experience at their restaurant. Algusto's isn't your typical Mexican place. If you like super-fried-tasting Mexican, this 'aint it. That said, I think it's the freshest Mexican food in the area. I'm a vegetarian, and they have a lot of options and are more than happy to make adjustments to menu items to accommodate special needs. The guacamole is so fresh and so tasty, and they also have a salsa menu of six or seven salsas ranging from mild to hot to select from (I highly recommend the hot -- unique flavor, not too spicy but has some bite to it). They offer low-carb menu items and a la carte in addition to great house specialties. Super clean, and the staff is really friendly. I live a half hour away and it's totally worth the trip. Meals averages around $10 plus drink. Chips, salsa, and guacamole were around $5. Average sized proportions. There did not seem to be any combos. Most meals were one or two of something, such as two enchiladas, three tacos, one tostada, etc. Also, there is no lunch menu. We are new to Tampa and have not eaten at other Mexican restaurants here.
