there should be one everywhere! 4/10/2006

Seriously, there should be an Alamo Drafthouse (or something like it) everywhere. A movie theater that serves a full menu of decent, reasonably priced food and alcohol is such a great idea. Personally, I don't see first run movies here that often because their ticket prices are the same as any other move theater (they haven't always been) - and if I'm going to have dinner and a movie I can go to a better restaurant before or after the movie. However, I really do like their special events and midnight movies. Check out their calendar. more

Truly Indpendent in Spirit and Function 4/7/2006

My first experience with the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema was one that would have a lasting effect on me and was something that I will never forget. I had been hired by Scion to promote the Scion xPress Fest being held at the Drafthouse. I had never been to nor even heard of the Drafthouse but I was very pleased with what I found. The staff was incredibly nice and very easy to work with, they went out of their way to accommodate us and take care of us. The theater itself was amazing, a good size screen 40', great projection and the setup can't be beat. Unless a giant sits in front of you you won't have to worry about your view being blocked. There are slim tables in front of you and they serve some great beers and food while you are watching your films. The food is good and not average in anyway, prices are pretty decent, but it is smarter to get a beer than a $3.50 Soda. We only had one hiccup when the server dropped the credit card and couldn't find it. We found it after a quick search and the server refused to let us pay and even gave us a bunch of free tickets to future shows. At the end of the night I was thrilled to find Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez in the lobby, after a short talk I joined them for a middle of the night screening of Carrie back in the theater. My one night at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema was something I won't soon forget and it certainly won't be my last. more

great movie theatre 12/29/2005

This is one of the things which truly makes Austin unique. The concept is wonderful and there are always special events going on to promote new movies which just came out. They have great drink specials and the food isn’t bad. The service is usually excellent and with the student discount offered they are far less expensive than the more boring theatres in town. The only bad thing about this theatre is that they are usually very crowded, especially on opening night. more

Good food, movies, and baby fun! 10/31/2005

Alamo is awesome on Tuesdays (all locations except the downtown one) first showing of all shows for parents with small kids and infants. One thing I hated when I had my first child was that I was never able to go see a movie again. Baby day is perfect for stay at home parents who want to do something fun with their kids. They have cheap pizza/drink/movie deals at the first matinee too! It's nice to have a glass of wine or a beer while you eat your pizza and watch a movie too! I believe the downtown Alamo has a free kids movie every Sat. at noon-ish too! Extra bonus! more

Alamo Drafthouse 10/29/2005

This is the best idea ever! Why hasn't this place been around forever! Dinner, movie, and drinks! Awesome! It's a can't miss. Hubby and I are able to go out on a "date" sometimes...but we don't always have a lot of time, so the Alamo Drafthouse is perfect for us. The food isn't bad, the drinks are better! And something else I appreciate, we have even been able to take the kids to certain kid friendly shows. Granted, the theatre can be very crowded with a lot of kids, but the kids enjoy the show and Mom & Dad still get a drink! Oh, and Tuesdays used to be Bring your baby day to the Lake Creek location. I'm not sure if they still do that....you'd think with a one year old I'd check into that! more

Genius 10/8/2005

A movie theater, resturant, and bar?? I love it. The Alamo is one of my favorite things about Austin, and I think every city should jump on the bandwagon. You get special little clips instead of boring commercials before the previews and the movie start, plus with the tables in front of you, you get plenty of leg room. Good food, smart service system, nobody under 18 except on special nights, and a heavily enforced no talking rule. If they added a full bar, I'd be in heaven. more

Dinner and a movie-all in one! 8/28/2005

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is great to go enjoy an quick evening out. Great for those people with obligations like kids who have babysitters waiting on them. It is great to go enjoy a movie and a few drinks and snacks. They show great movies, box office hits, and they have great prices for the services they offer. Be sure to get tickets early, they sell out fast and the place can get pretty crowded. more

Dinner and a Movie Perfected 8/21/2005

This movie theatre is a great concept and it definitely makes for wonderful evening out. You can eat, drink a beer (although I am not a beer drinker -- my husband is) and watch a movie all at the same time. It's perfect for those nights you can't find enough time to dine at a restaurant and make a movie. It makes for a great evening out. more

Movie and dinner all at once 8/20/2005

My favorite place to go on the weekend is Alamo Draft house. Where else can you go watch the latest block buster movie while having dinner? The food they serve is very good. One of my favorites is the cheese steak sandwich. You can get beer, wine and almost a full bar. The prices are very reasonable. The only thing to remember is if it is a new release be sure and go early because it does get crowded or do what we do and buy tickets in advance! more

Remember the Alamo! 8/20/2005

If you live in Austin area and you have not been to see a movie at the Alamo your missing out. First of all you can order a bucket of beer and have it brought to you seat during the movie. You can also order food if want to go that route. The Alamo has great off the wall events like Mr. Sinus theater. Check out their website for the latest contest and events. Enjoy life go to the Alamo. more

Great Austin Movie Theater 8/15/2005

Come here and sit and relax while watching movies. You can have a beer, sanwich, pizza, fries or all sorts of things. Not the greatest food around but what do you expect you are eating in movie theater. Still though it is nice to be able to enjoy a cold drink while watching a movie, or you can have a pizza. Also they show a variety of shows, including spike and mike's animation films, or sometimes they have running live commentaries during movies. THey did one for Crossroads i think.. i hear they are great more

The Austin Original Theater Experience 8/14/2005

Austin’s original theater is still the best. Sure you still get the huge screen and rumbling speakers just like in all other theaters, but this place is special. They have a full concessions stand that beats out anything you’ve ever had at a baseball game. Whether you want nachos, a hamburger, or a pizza, you can get it without ever leaving your seat. The rows are spaced with two extra feet in between and have a long bar-like table stretching all along the row, and you simply write your order on a piece of paper and hang it in a clip in front of your row and a waiter will come, pick up your order, and bring your food and bill directly to your seat! more

A fun and interesting way to spend an evening... 8/14/2005

Alamo Drafthouse is perhaps best known for the fact that they serve beer (and food) in the theatre while you watch the movie. You can order beer by the bucket, and the waitstaff will come by to pick up your order, settle the tab, etc. in discreet ways during the movie. Alamo is also home of Mister Sinus Theatre, where a comedy troupe of three people does skits that are simultaneously performed with movie classics, such as Pretty in Pink or Dirty Dancing. Mister Sinus is extremely funny and sells out rather quickly. The only downside to Alamo is that sometimes the theatre smells kind of like feet. more

Great Beer and Movie 7/16/2005

This is one of my favorite places to go and watch a great movie and get some beer! It is great to have people bring beer to you while you are watching a movie. They have great cheese fries and burgers and all sorts of food. They occassionally will have some shows like the Pink Floyd and Wizard of Oz synchrinization which is also really neat to watch. more

The perfect place for dinner and a movie 7/14/2005

The Alamo Draft House is a great place to go see a movie, they show movies ranging from new releases to independent films. One thing that makes this a great place to go is the fact that they serve a full menu and as the name implies they serve beer. They would receive five stars from me if there was a location closer to my house. more

So Uniquely Austin 7/12/2005

Everyone who lives in Austin has been to the Alamo Drafthouse for a movie at least once. The original downtown location is the best of them all. While the other locations play current movies, this place still plays many classics -- as well as many movies you may not have heard of before. They also have nifty shows such as Mr. Sinus Theater and animation marathons. They also have the best before, after, and even sometimes middle-of-show entertainment. Highly recommended if you've never been. Website: http://www.drafthouse.com/ more
