Stay away from Akbar, Santa Monica 11/7/2004

Being an Indian and having lived in LA for over 6 years now, I must say Akbar at Santa Monica was a huge disappointment. For the first time ever, I ended up trashing the food I ordered for takeout. The samosas smelled bad, their kulchas were terrible and so was everything else. Will never go there again more

Best Indian in LA 10/29/2004

I've been to many Indian restaurants in LA, but I always end up saying ""Akbar's better."" While only having eaten at Akbar's Pasadena location and new Beverly Center one, I can still say that Akbar is the best at what they do. The decor is phenomenal- a low-lit environment with very warm colors all over. It all blends perfectly with the warm and deep flavors of the food. I always try to get something different when I go and I've never been dissapointed. The pieces of naan are huge (one order can feed for people), the chutney's are rich and spicy, and the rest of the menu follows suit. Each dish stands on its own and has its own unique flavor- never repeating something else. The service has always been outstanding. Very nice and helpful in suggesting dishes if you're unsure. Pros: Warm environment, Outstanding Food, Incredible Waitstaff more

cute place, sketchy service 10/24/2004

The ""owner"" comes over and gives us the most contrived, oily pitch ever. Talking a mile a minute, not even stopping to listen the answers to the ""questions"" he was asking us, he tried very hard to get us to buy wine. Then they give us two bottles of Pelligrino, which none of us asked for, and were charged 6 bucks for the one we kept because it came opened. Once they realized we weren't big spenders this night the service was literally non existent. The ""owner"" nor waitress visited our table once. We got our bill and left. The food was decent. The appetizer was excellent. It's a cute place but the owner was a bit of a shady character. We didn't appreciate the service at all. But I would still recommend it. Maybe the owner will treat you better. It's a cute place. Pros: Cute decor., Flattering lighting., Moderate prices. Cons: , Shady drinks policy., Cramped space. more

Mmmm.... 7/11/2004

The curries at Akbar were really good...flavorful and has everything from mild to hot (even though I didn't think the ""hot"" was THAT spicy). Save room for dessert - their mango cheesecake is excellent. Only two complaints: parking can be difficult and the booths are a little squishy. Other than that, definitely a place worth going to. Pros: Good Food, Great Service, Cozy Cons: , Small booths more

Indian for Everyone 12/9/2002

I love everything about this home away from home. The food is absolutely delicious, the owners and staff efficient and friendly, the selection of wines is wonderful and the price is very reasonable. Lately I've been hooked on the Chicken Kati Roll, but I've never had anything less than an excellent meal. My husband's favorite is the Tandori Sea Bass. Everyone we have taken to Akbar, loves it too. Pros: service, no cons more

What a Sea Bass!!! 9/13/2002

This little restaurant is just a great experience. The Sea Bass is the best I've had in all of LA. It tastes like butter and the chicken tikka is phenominal as well. Try the cheese stuffed nan bread - you won't be disappointed. The entire staff and owner are a delight as well. Pros: Ample street parking. more
