LOVE Akari!!!!! best kept secret in the valley more

Happy Hour! 5/9/2010

The great thing about Akari is you never have to wait in line (but it's never dead either). They have decent prices, tasty sushi and flavorful rolls. Their happy hour is quite stellar, with beer/hot sake for $2.50, cold sake at $2.95, and nigiri/rolls for $2.50 and up. I’ve never been disappointed with this true hole in the wall, and I’m sure you won't be either. more

Its OK. 9/6/2008

I got a caterpillar roll and an order of Yellowtail Nigiri. I thought the yellowtail tasted pretty fresh, I was happy with it. The roll however... was just OK. the eel in the sushi was SO tiny. I could barely see it. It was more like a california roll with avocado on it. I ate it and had a kind of ""eh"" feeling. \r I will go back, but I will stick to the nigiri and sashimi.\r Its a cute little restaurant though.... but the waitress wasnt terribly friendly.... which was a big factor on my 3 star rating. Pros: Prices are good... the fish seemed pretty fresh. Cons: Waitress is qiet and doesnt smile much, Rolls are average at best. more

Our fave Valley sushi joint! Fresh, affordable with impeccable, kind service! 7/26/2008

My bf and I LOVE Akari Sushi! We found it during our period of trying out every Valley sushi joint. \r \r The sushi is always fresh - my fave is the spicy tuna (no globs of mayo here!)... Not only is it tasty but you can get a spicy tuna roll for $3.95! My fave is the Extreme Roll - spicy tuna roll rolled in tobiko and tempura crunchies, topped with more spicy tuna and scallops. And it's only $5.95.\r \r I've been to other Valley sushi joints but Akari beats them all, even Sushi Katsu-ya. \r \r The ambiance is pretty typical for strip mall sushi places... black lacquer chairs, nothing too spectacular. It's a really small place, too... just a sushi bar and about 4 or 5 tables. It's always full but we've only had to wait in line once (Friday night primetime) but it wasn't for too long.\r \r The service is also what really sets Akari apart. Rudy, the sushi chef, is friendly and nice. The one server at Akari, Sophie, is amazing! She is kind, sweet and very efficient. She also remembers exactly what we order as our first round of sushi and our beverages. When we walk in, we are promptly seated with a glass of water and Diet Coke waiting for us. \r \r You should try Akari! Amazing prices, fresh tasty sushi with some more interesting varieties of rolls thrown in and really great service! Pros: Affordable, fresh sushi, great service Cons: The place is tiny! more

Rudy is a sushi god! 2/2/2008

Akari is probably one of the most underrated sushi restaurants in the Valley. It's in an unassuming strip mall with a Baja Fresh and a Baskin Robbins, where it hides, tucked away, in the corner. Most of the patrons are loyal customers who have been going there since it opened and some are first timers that have heard their friends rave about this little place for the last few years. Usually, the latter evolves into the former after only a few trips. I?ve been to many other places in the Valley and I would definitely rank Akari above Kushiyu or Katsuya.\r \r I've known Rudy, the owner and head chef of Akari, for many years. When he decided to open his own restaurant, everyone who had grown accustomed to his expertise at Revolving Sushi, picked up their appetites and followed him to Akari. The menu at Akari has a great variety of specialty rolls and traditional sushi, something for everyone. The quality of the fish is exceptional and the combination of flavors in the rolls work really well together. Rudy is truly talented and you can taste the difference. I have recommended Akari to many of my friends and coworkers, who have now developed their own addiction to Rudy's creations and that says a lot about how good this place really is.\r \r Some of the things that make Akari so appealing and addicting are the cozy environment (not a place for big parties) and the intangibles of stellar service. For example, the server, Sophie, always remembers that my wife needs the cheater chopsticks and sweet vinegar and will bring them over as soon as we sit down. Rudy knows what we want to eat without us saying anything more than ""the usual."" This consists of the spicy tuna on crispy rice, 911 roll, tuna albacore slam, Six Nine roll (with albacore and avocado only) and a rock and roll cut roll, all on soy paper. If you like that, you can just ask for Haig?s usual and they?ll know what to do. ;-)\r \r By the way, my wife and I usually come in on Fridays, so save us a seat and enjoy! Pros: Food, Service and Price are exceptional! Cons: Small place in an admittedly untrendy location. more

best sushi 8/7/2007

when i first pulled up to Akari i looked through the window and thought what a dive/dump. i was discussing with my friend if we should eat here when a man outside told us it was the best sushi in the valley, so we decided to take our chances. he was right. the sushi is AMAZING. i tried the 911 roll, the baked scallop roll and the salmon tempura roll and it was unbelievable. i highly recommend this place, its a hidden jewel. for 32 dollars i was able to get the 911 roll, baked scallop roll, salmon tempura roll, creamy salmon roll, salmon sushi, beer and a green tea. the prices are wonderful. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!! Pros: cheap and so good!!!!! more

Delicious Sushi (Not sure why it says Pizza), Good for a small group 2/18/2007

Hidden jewel in Woodland hills. Sushi is to die for. Especially their Bonzai Roll (shrimp tempura, crab, in soy paper) and Rock N Roll (Baked Scallop roll). Everything is always fresh and everyone is nice. The place is kind of small, so I don't recommend it for a party of more then four. Most Sushi and Rolls are from $2.50-$4.00, with few exceptions. They have sake of course. Very chill atmosphere. Pros: Everything tastes great, Cheap, Relaxing atmosphere.... Cons: Kinda small so can't bring too many people.... more
