Very Rude People 11/20/2009

The restaurant is not customer oriented. They feel that is okay for them to get the to go order wrong consistently!! INSTEAD OF APOLOGIZING TO THE CUSTOMER, THEY COMPLAIN!! Pros: Food is pretty good Cons: the service was terrible! more

Worst service less than average sushi 9/20/2008

BAD service. C'mon, if the food is just below average, at least be nice! Not recommended. Go to Akira at 1137 Greenleaf Ave instead - uncomparable food and service. Pros: none really Cons: everything more

Sushi is average 3/11/2008

Sushi here is OK, nothing great. The Chicken Terriaki dishes are just average. I have had much better tasting at other Japanese restaurants. If you really like Japanese food better place is Sunshine Cafe on Clark in Chicago. Pros: close and convenient Cons: Expensive, average tasting meals, more

HORRIBLE Sushi!!!! 2/19/2008

This place is a health code violation in waiting!!!! I have now gotten sick from Akai Hana twice!!! The first time I thought it was just the flu, but by the second time I wised up. I have been coming to this restaurant for years, and though I have seen a slow decline in food quality, they have finally sunk to their lowest level ... a level that is surely not comparable to their high priced menu (compared to many great sushi places in the city). And worst of all, the customer service is absolutely TERRIBLE!!! Even when I told them that my unagi didn't seem right (after eating a couple of pieces then pushing the plate away in disgust!!), they would only give me half off my roll because they claimed I had eaten half. I couldn't have stomached eating half of this terrible excuse for sushi!! I will never go back again and I suggest that no one else put themselves through the experiences I have had!!!!!! Pros: Parking Lot ... and that's a stretch! Cons: Food quality, customer service, menu usability, etc. .... more

BEST in the North Shore!!! 7/16/2007

I remember when my aunt took me here for the first time for my first sushi experience. This was back in the fall of 96 and close to 11 years later I still go here for those occational cravings for sushi and salmon teriyaki. One of the things I liked most about the place is that it was close to where I went to high school, Loyola Academy. Sure, I was nervous trying sushi for the first time (like anyone else) but honestly there wasn't anything to be scared of. I remember having the salmon teriyaki box that included 3 pieces of sushi (shrimp, tuna, salmon). It was good then, and it's still good now. There's a reason to why Zagat rated this restaurant so high on their list. However, despite them making changes here and there, I think it's in need of some changes to their menu. Yes, the place isn't 100% authentic Japanese (more Korean acting Japanese, but what place really is true Japanese) but it's WAY better food than some other places I've tried. Plus, the value of their sushi gives you more for your money. I just wish they made changes to their menu more often, like changing the sushi selections as well as their bowl selection. But bottom line, I like this place and will continue to frequent this place. The food is good and the staff (well, most of them) are friendly too. But it would be nice to see some change go down after all these years. Pros: Good food and sake, GREAT sushi, Good value Cons: menu rarely changes, parking (despite being lot parking) more

good value 11/13/2006

Authentic it's not, but if you're looking for good Japanese-ish food at a good price, this is a good place. Pros: good value Cons: non-spectacular more

Good food-horrible service! 11/26/2005

Consistently bad service. The staff could not care less about you. They are constantly running away from customers as soon as order is placed. It is too bad that this restaurant does not seem to care about service at all. Customers should feel welcome. Pros: Good sushi Cons: Bad service, ambience more

Aki!!! 2/23/2003

It is Great food! Graet for small groups of friends adults. Pros: Food, Services Cons: Nosy more

Not much for atmosphere 1/5/2003

TV is always on. Sushi chefs are not Japanese. Diner-like atmosphere. Food is good. Prices are OK. Lots of families. Friendly. Pros: Informal Cons: Parking can be hard more

worth the travel 8/18/2002

this restaurant is very popular, and it is worth all the attention because their sushis are very good and the ambience is just right.i highly recommend this restaurant Pros: good food, nice ambience, inexpensive Cons: crowded, long wait more

Economical and high quality 8/15/2002

I went here for lunch after seeing that Akai Hana has the highest rating for food on Zagat and was not disappointed. The quality of the fish for the price paid was outstanding, and the restaurant is nicely tucked back in the corner so it wasn't too crowded. Definitely worth investigation and repeat business. more
