I've been on other group trips, but this was my first with AFS. I was going to Egypt. Pre-trip, I advised Suzy, one of the owners, that I was a non-smoker and that I could not room with a snorer. About a month before the trip, she distributed the roommate list. I contacted my roommate and found out that she was, indeed, a snorer. I e-mailed Suzy to remind her that I said from the very beginning that I could not sleep with a snorer. She e-mailed me back rudely with two options: cancel my trip and lose all my money or do the trip and adjust my attitude about snorers. She did not offer a compromise on giving me a single room.
I wrote her back and told her that I found her options dismaying but that I would suck it up and do the trip as planned. She then called me and literally yelled at me on the phone asking how I expected her to screen for snoring (not too difficult a task, if you ask me) and then miraculously came up with a single room for me, for which I had to pay an additional $495. Having felt coerced and berated, I gave over my credit card number and arranged for a single.
While on the trip (which actually was somewhat enjoyable), I came to find out that not only did my original roommate snore, she also smoked. I also found out that several others had pre-trip problems with Suzy and Terry (her husband and co-owner) and that someone had paid only $200 for a single because he was an odd male.
Upon returning, I e-mailed Suzy and related these findings to her and asked for a partial refund since she had wrongly booked me in the first place and she insisted I take a single room. She flat-out refused.
There are many other group tour companies that do equal, if not better, trips but their employees treat their customers with much more respect and take their needs into consideration. I suggest you go with someone else and not with Adventures for Singles. With them, your ""Adventure"" will not only be the trip, it will be dealing with Suzy.
Pros: good trip
Cons: owners are entirely unprofessional
