Editorial review from Citysearch 9/30/2012

I have been going to Dr A for over 10 years but after recently reading the following from NC Med Disp Board I will be finding another Dr.\r In Raleigh, Dr. Richard D. Adelman’s license was suspended for one month, with an additional 11 months’ probation after the family practitioner allegedly failed to appropriately monitor a patient undergoing screening colonoscopy in his office.\r \r The patient died during the procedure; an autopsy determined the patient died from cardio-respiratory arrest due to complications from sedation. According to the medical board, the patient was given Demerol and Versed before the procedure, and then eight minutes later, given and additional dose. Demerol is often used to relieve pain, while Versed is used to produce sleepiness or to relieve anxiety before surgery or other medical procedures.\r \r The board reported there was no documentation of why the patient was administered additional sedation. more

Dr Adelman did a great job with the circumcision of my twin boys. The procedures(s) happened without a hitch, and we found Dr Adelman overall friendly and apparently very competent.  \r \r There is only one problem--he told us he would give us a deal on the price of the circumcisions. Normally, he said, he would charge $200 per circumcision, but for our twins he would charge $300 total. Never having paid anyone out-of-pocket for a circumcision, I thought that was a bit steep, but it sounded like he knew what he was doing, and he was recommended by someone I trusted, so I agreed to $300 for the pair.\r \r After the circumcisions, we went home satisfied, and I waited for the $300 bill. A few months later, sure enough, we got a statement for $300 minus about $15 for our insurance network discount. I gladly paid it, remembering that that was what we had agreed to. In hindsight, I probably should have wondered why the name of only one of my sons appeared on the statement. Six months after settling our account (or so I thought), we received ANOTHER $300 bill for the other son. After a lot of phone tag and double-checking, Dr Adelman's office (we never got to speak to him personally again--it was all through his billing department) gave us a ""deal"" that was still $100 more than what we had originally agreed to.\r \r Conclusion: if you want good friendly service with a chance of getting charged double, Dr Adelman is your man. Otherwise, skip it and find someone else. more

Patient should explore options... 4/11/2012

I have been a patient since 1993 and have just left. Same impersonal treatment, lack of compassion, inconsistent treatment, rude mannerism, rude receptionist. Same decorations for 18 years. A money pit . There are so many more professional institutions in Raleigh. Glad I finally broke the habit of going there.....I am done!! more

Very Professional & Nice Staff 5/19/2011

For the past 10 years whenever I've been sick they've managed to fit me in their busy schedule as long as I call early in the morning. Staff is cheerful and very professional. Dr. Adelman knows medicine and is passionate about keeping current with the latest drugs and therapies. When I leave his office I feel lots better than when I walked in! more

Love this doctor 5/16/2009

We have only seen Dr. Adelman twice, but both times we were very pleased. His office is always busy, which is a testament to his skill and professionalism as a doctor. He's friendly, kind, and puts the children at ease in his office. He also has a sense of humor and uses this to really lighten the mood. You can tell his office staff is happy to be working there, too. more

Not happy 9/27/2008

Dr. Adelman makes me feel uncomfortable. He doesn't seem to listen, I hardly finish my sentence and he is already talking. I usually leave thinking ""ups, I forgot to say this and that"". I feel so rushed and usually he is out of the office in a short time. He minimizes my problems. When I had real problems, he told me to take vitamins, months later it turned out I had a neurological disorder. I avoid him and go directly to a specialist for my problems and go there only when I need a flu shot or something simple. I am currently researching other practitioners and will be leaving Dr. Adelman as soon as possible. more
