Beautiful brunch by Thomas Keller 11/24/2008

This review is for their Sunday brunch. I have to say this was the best brunch I had this year. $38 per person with 2 courses and dessert, the portion is generous and food is comforting. You get out full and satisfied guaranteed.\r \r Yesterday, the menu was: smoked salmon with cucumber salad and yogurt raita sauce, suveed tri top, with delicious potatoes and roasted small onions. The dessert was lemon cream bar. I wish I can elaborate more on how it was prepared, because it was not as simple as I described. Food is very simple, but very meticulously prepared. You do identify the familiar flavors right away, then you are amazed how well that is executed.\r \r The concept is very unique. As the restaurant is there to give you the ""temporary relief from hunger"", the menu resembles files from the doctors office and the staff are in brown casual shirts and jeans. The decor is simple and themed around the comfort food with big old French style kitchen tables at the front and in the dining room with iron pigs on top of them. The food is served family style, which gives you the visual of generous portion. Immediate relief from hunger can come from seeing the big plate of hot food in front of you alone.\r \r Service is very knowledgeable and settle. I would say that at times we felt it was a little slow, but welcoming. \r \r I would love to go try their dinner one of these days. Pros: everything! more

Every Napa trip should include a visit here 6/23/2008

I'll admit right off the bat, I had very mixed preconceptions about a Thomas Keller restaurant serving comfort food for $50 a pop. A lot of things in that statement just didn't jive for me. Thankfully, Ad Hoc shot down all my worries. The place was packed (even at 4pm), but even without reservations we snagged immediate bar seats and the promise of a table if we wanted to wait. Our waiter was knowledgeable, friendly, and in love with wine and gourmet cuisine without being pretentious. The meal was a 4-course prix fixe menu which included an early summer vegetable salad, the most sumptuous pork I've ever had, a cheese plate, and dessert. The salad had at least 15 different vegetables, each of which was prepared differently to bring out its own special something. The cheese was paired with deliciously warm local honey and almonds, and dessert was good ole vanilla ice cream smooshed between two homemade chocolate chip cookies. All of it is served family style, meaning the table gets a large dish from which diners can serve themselves as little or as much as they want. It's a small thing but it definitely increases that warm, comfortable feeling. Ad Hoc is a hotspot for pretty much everyone - weekend wine tasters, locals (both average and famous), and Bay Area foodies, which leads to a lovely mix of people eating ice cream sandwiches with forks and knives to those holding them in their bare hands. Great fun and great food in such a beautiful area - where can you go wrong? more

Yummy after wine tour 12/29/2007

A great place to go after hitting the wineries. I went there this weekend. A set menu is varied per day. It has a four course meal and the servers are very helpful in selecting wine with the entrees. The food size has great proportions and the food is cooked well. \r \r Overall, a great place to eat. Pros: Price, Service, Food Cons: Busy more

You're gonna love this place! 12/11/2007

Have you ever been to a restaurant where there is only 1 entree on the menu? No, well this is the place and they pull it off to perfection. The night we were there the menu was salad with goat cheese, braised short ribs with root veggies, a cheese plate and apple crisp. It was heaven. Everything is served family style. You might think that you'd feel rushed in a family style restaurant but not here. The wine list is pretty good and well priced. There's a bar with plenty of room to dine. The night we were there we had a celebrity sighting...Robert and Mrs. Mondavi. If the godfather of Napa is dining there you know that it has to be fantastic. Pros: Wine list, flavor, interesting menu more

Don't miss this one or you will regret it 3/10/2007

This restaurant is easily serving the best food in Yountville. Although not as exquisite as the French Laundry, what it lacks, it more than makes up for it in atmosphere and artistry. You will come out of the French Laundry satisfied, you will more likely be stuffed and stumbling, but Ad Hoc makes the meal just perfect. The four course combination is just right and even people who don't usually order cheese will appreciate the way cheese is done here. The staff is friendly and attentive, training much like the French Laundry, yet the atmosphere is a lot less stuffy. We have eaten there 4 times in the last 2 months and each time we are still more surprised and enthralled. Pros: Good food, good value, good service more

Holy sh*t is this place good! 1/12/2007

After trying The French Laundry a few months back, we knew that if anyone could elevate home cooked comfort food to an art, Chef Thomas Keller was the man. All four courses were mouth watering and cooked to perfection. We were so excited to see our next dish. The smells and tastes woke the ladies in our party up after a long day of wine tasting. The casually dressed waitstaff, family style all you can eat portions and no reservations needed(but recommended) made this place not only delicious, but fun. Everyone in the restaurant eats the same thing. And with an affordable menu that changes everyday, were dying to come back! Pros: For this price, you cannot eat at any better place in the World! It's 6 hours from LA. Cons: It's 6 hours from LA. more
