I'll admit right off the bat, I had very mixed preconceptions about a Thomas Keller restaurant serving comfort food for $50 a pop. A lot of things in that statement just didn't jive for me. Thankfully, Ad Hoc shot down all my worries. The place was packed (even at 4pm), but even without reservations we snagged immediate bar seats and the promise of a table if we wanted to wait. Our waiter was knowledgeable, friendly, and in love with wine and gourmet cuisine without being pretentious. The meal was a 4-course prix fixe menu which included an early summer vegetable salad, the most sumptuous pork I've ever had, a cheese plate, and dessert. The salad had at least 15 different vegetables, each of which was prepared differently to bring out its own special something. The cheese was paired with deliciously warm local honey and almonds, and dessert was good ole vanilla ice cream smooshed between two homemade chocolate chip cookies. All of it is served family style, meaning the table gets a large dish from which diners can serve themselves as little or as much as they want. It's a small thing but it definitely increases that warm, comfortable feeling. Ad Hoc is a hotspot for pretty much everyone - weekend wine tasters, locals (both average and famous), and Bay Area foodies, which leads to a lovely mix of people eating ice cream sandwiches with forks and knives to those holding them in their bare hands. Great fun and great food in such a beautiful area - where can you go wrong?
