Find someone, anyone, else 3/6/2019

I took my Silky here for an ear hematoma and was told they would use a blanket stitch to guarantee the ear would stand in the after condition. Not only does the ear not stand but the surgery site resulted in a roll of skin unlike anything anything ever seen in man or animal for the surgery site repair. This cost me close to $500 to have my dog's ear butchered and never stand again and no guarantee being honored. Lat week and 2 times this week I called to inquire about the estimate received for my other dog and to see if there was a vet there that really knew how to perform surgery without the horrible butchery found on my Silky. I was promised a return call from the Veterinarian owner, DR. Abair, of this clinic. That call never came. But I did eventually receive a call from a Tech who offered a free evaluation of my dog's ear and declined to honor the estimate I had received for removing cysts from my other dog. I was told by this same tech that Dr. Abair will not call me until the one day I would not be available, over a week after my initial call and after the two subsequent calls and the last call in which I was promised he would call me today. My time is also valuable and to be so disrespected is indicative of how little concern this clinic has for their customers and unfortunately the animals they work on. more

One of the worst mistakes i ever made 1/27/2019

If you love your pet do NOT take them there. i was referred to this place and I regret listening to that person and the day I walked in that office. My dog is dead because the vet did not properly perform the procedure my dogs eye kept oozing and bleeding for 3 weeks and they told me it was fine to bring him back in 5 days. when i first brought him back there The vet (i use the term loosely ) called him a she after we had been there 4 times and he removed my dogs eye he still did not know that Eddie was a boy, then he tells me to bring him back on Saturday because he was going on vacation but came back in the room 3 minutes later and told me you will have to make an appt with Dennis next week because I am going on vacation. This man does not belong operating on any animal the stiches looked like Frankenstein stiches. He told me that if I have to go to the emergency vet to tell them not to put a tube down his throat and he said it was oozing because he could not TIE off all the blood vessels in the eye area and I find out that there are only two things that need to be removed and they should be completely removed not TIED OFF. this makes me think that he knew he did something wrong and he was blowing me off hoping I would take him somewhere else which I couldn't because I spent all the money I had there. Also no one even bothered to call me to find out how my dog was doing even after missing the follow up appointment. I called and rescheduled the appointment 2 days after I was suppose to go in. They are unorganized listen I could go on but I dont have the energy I don't even want to think about it It makes me sick to think I brought my dog there after promising him I would take care of him, protect him and keep him safe. I am writing this to let you know just stay away from this place. save yourself some heartache. please. more

Owner Message
  • Academy West Animal Hospital has been operating to help pets in need since 1976. The owner of the practice is Dr. Thomas J Ratke.

A graduate of Michigan State University, he has been practicing for 35 years, and has many years of experience when it comes to the care of our client's pets. He also has been working for 13 years with the Search and Rescue and is currently working for the Federal Government Veterinary Disaster Relief. Dr. Ratke helped for 3 weeks when Hurricane Katrina hit.

Our associate veterinarian is Dr. James Kimmel, who has had years of experience in treating all kinds of pets. Several years ago, this clinic would see large farm animals, but we still occasionally see a pig or two. We mostly specialize in small animals, such as dogs & cats, but we do see exotics like; ferrets, guinea pigs, rats, bunnies, some reptiles and birds.

We are a full service veterinary hospital offering basic surgery as well as some complex surgeries, and all facets of medicine. We specialize in internal medicine, radiology, and are incorporating ultrasound. We also provide boarding and grooming at our facility.

We strive to meet your pet's needs and keep them healthy. We hope you stop by and visit us for any needs your pet may have. Our friendly outgoing staff will make you feel right at home. Our clients are like an extended part of the family.
