I work with adults with Developmental Disabilities, who live in group homes. I recently tried to see about getting one of our individuals in a program with A Worthy Ranch to allow him the opportunity to ride a horse. This has been a very long standing dream for him. This person is his own guardian, and is able to make decisions on his own, whether they are personal or legal - just like you and I. When I called to speak about this opportunity, the woman on the other end was extremely rude with me. She stated that since this person is ""14 years old mentally"" as she understood it, she could not help at all. She wanted a power of attorney or paperwork that someone can sign for him. I informed her that nobody, including her and I, has that kind of paperwork as our own guardians. She said that this individual would not understand what he was signing because of his IQ number. I asked her to send me one of their contracts and I could go over it with him to explain just in case he did not understand, and she asked, ""Why would I send it to you?"" In any case, it seems we need to look elsewhere to find someone to help make this dream come true. I wish people would understand that living in a group home or being Developmentally Disabled does not make a person stupid or unable to understand anything. I have no personal experience with A Worthy Ranch besides this unfortunate conversation. They may be a good company and good people if you are so called ""normal"", but it seems that this woman is a bit biased in regards to people with Developmental Disabilities. If you choose to participate in a horseback riding experience at A Worthy Ranch, I do hope you enjoy the time and they are nice to you and yours; however, I believe they are less than ""Worthy"" and I would recommend going elsewhere.....
