A Uno and its companion shoe store offer a refreshing assortment of women's styles and designers. While some of the names are familiar -- Marithe Francois Girbaud, ELM, Anda, Gortz, Rostel, for instance, many of the designers are unusual. The Icelandic knitwear brand Elm Designs is one you don't see anywhere else.
The clothes tend to be more arty than trendy, so the look is definitely more downtown than uptown. Or rather, more downtown, the way downtown used to be.
The companion shoe store (two doors down from the clothing store) offers unusual shoes that are not carried widely, like Trippen, Robert Clergerie, Cydwoq, Tentazione and Yosuke Yajima. The offerings are light on stilettos, and heavy on flats, platforms and wedges.
So, if you're looking for an outfit for an art opening or museum show, come to A Uno. Of course, if you need a sweater and a pair of pants, you can shop at A Uno as well.
