Editorial review from Citysearch 12/12/2012

I just had a Brazilian wax with Betsy and it was the worst waxing experience of my life. I get waxes once a month, and have visited many different salons around the world, so I understand that different aestheticians have different practices, but this experience was ridiculously unprofessional. To start with, I told Betsy that I wanted to leave a triangle of hair, that I didn’t want everything removed. With the first pass she said, “Oh, I might have already messed that up.” I looked down and she had removed over half of my pubic hair with one pass. She said she could “work around” her error and leave me with a landing strip, which I wasn’t thrilled with but no longer had a choice about.\r \r When she was “finished,” she gave me a washcloth with wax remover to “clean myself up.” As I cleaned, I saw that Betsy had removed all the hair from the top, save for a very strange looking landing strip, yet left all the hair on my inner labia. I asked her to remove that hair, and she did, while giving me the silent treatment and refusing to acknowledge when I spoke to her. After, she went through her “no sex, no exercising, no tanning” speech in a ridiculously robotic voice – exaggeratedly avoiding eye contact – and walked out of the room. I used the same, now very waxy, washcloth to clean myself up, but saw that the “landing strip” was a weird zig-zag, not even remotely straight (she had clearly taken off too much hair in that first pass to create a straight line). At the end, the hair curved off to one side like a weird tail. If you can imagine the shape, it looked like a wobbly fishhook. I knew there was no way to repair it, so I had to go out into the salon, find Betsy, and ask her to remove the rest of the hair. \r \r She came wordlessly back into the room and removed the hair by barely glancing at it. Needless to say, she missed a few patches, and I practically had to grab her arm before she stormed out of the room to ask her to remove them.\r \r Twice during the waxing, I apologized for not being clear about my expectations, even though, in my opinion, I had been (I was trying to thaw the ice in the room). Sometimes miscommunication happens, but she continued to give me the silent treatment. It was abundantly clear that she was not concerned, at all, with my satisfaction. She simply wanted me out the door.\r \r I had minor complaints as well, that I probably could have overlooked had the experience been better: The sheets on the bed were totally stained, which was very off-putting. Betsy placed my hands around the areas she was going to wax to help hold the skin taut, but continually placed my fingers directly in the hot wax, so my fingers were covered with wax by the time she was finished. She dragged strings of hot wax across my bod (and on my clothes) as she pulled the wax stick away. And she removed HUGE sections of hair with one pass without returning to “clean up” what was left behind.\r \r Even though she hadn't removed all the hair (there are still weird patches scattered around), I left. I wasn't going to ask her for a FOURTH time to finish the job. \r \r All I can say is AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. There is no way that Betsy has been professionally trained to wax. I have never reviewed a business before, but this experience was so dreadful that I cannot, with clear conscience, stay silent. more
