Great small neighborhood joint worth checking out!! 1/5/2009

My boyfriend and I had restaurants to another restaurants down the street but ended up missing our reservations so we walked down McDougal and found 12 Chairs. The menu looked really interesting and was VERY reasonably priced so we decided to sit down. We were there in the early afternoon on a weekend so it was pretty full but had a few tables open. From the looks of it, it was mostly people that knew each other or had already known the wait staff, it seemed like a very neighborly place which was nice. The menu was really interesting and everything they were bringing out to the other tables looked delicious so it was hard to pick just one thing on the menu! I ended up ordering a mushroom and onion omlette. The eggs and vegetables were cooked just right and after adding a sprinkle of black pepper on top of the eggs, it was perfectly seasoned. My boyfriend got the Shakshuka which is two eggs poached in a spicy moroccan tomato sauce; served with israeli salad. It looked delicious and smelled even better so I had to try a bite. It was served piping hot, and was just the right combination of heat and spices. The entire staff was also very friendly! I'm really glad we stumbled upon this place, and the next time I'm in soho for a day of shopping I'll be sure to stop by! It's also really nice because it's right by the subway so it was the perfect place to go on a cold and rainy day like the one we had. The prices were also VERY reasonable, which just made the entire experience wonderful. Pros: Shakshuka, near subway, friendly ambience and wait staff, great value Cons: too many choies on the menu! more

Great Neighborhood Cafe 10/21/2006

Whenever I am in the neighborhood I always try to eat at this place for lunch. A great low key, kick back vibe with friendly service. Eclectic menu, reasonable prices, great salads. Eat, relax, dessert, coffee or just hang, there's no rushing you out. I give it a 10 because it is the best that this type of place can be... a great neighborhood cafe. more

Great restaurant 8/20/2006

I love this place. The babaganoush is delicious. They have an array of foods ranging from schnitzel to borsch, to salads, to yummy sandwiches. And the warm chocolate cake... is AMAZING. It seems like a nice, small, cozy, casual place, it's not expensive. I would recommend this for a night out with a friend, or even a date, but probably not for groups. Pros: food, inexpensive more

Scruffy looks, amazing food 10/2/2005

I just discovered this little place a few weeks ago and can't get enough of it. The complete lack of decor makes it a pass for romantic occasions but overall this place is a true find (especially considering the underwhelming alternatives around Houston street). I've now been there several times and each time the food was top notch. If only they put a little effort into decorating, the place would be mobbed. However, the super nice service and the stellar food more than make up for it. Pros: food, price, location Cons: decor more
