Review content:
I've been eating at Tangerine once or twice a week for the past three years. I go there with my former gym partner almost every Saturday morning for brunch and often take friends there in the evening for dinner. We have had countless meals, on varying nights of the week, and they have all been quite wonderful. Friends from out-of-town -- as well as vegetarians -- have all been surprised by the quality of the food and the restaurant's reasonable prices.
Because I don't drink, I can't vouch for the wine list. But the food is delicious, beautifully presented, and consistently good. Some of the side dishes (eggplant with oyster sauce, broccoli and cauliflower with sauteed garlic) are special treats. They do a great job with lamb. If you want a special taste, try the duck rolls and taste the green sauce -- you'd think it was made with bananas! (It's not.) The gelato truffles are a dessert not to be missed. If you're going for brunch, I can heartily recommend the macaroni and corn pancakes -- quite different from the usual.
Not since the glory days of the Neon Chicken have I had a place like Tangerine, that I could consider a culinary home base. Last Christmas eight of us descended on the restaurant for a spontaneous dinner that was one of the most relaxed, charming meals I've had with close friends in years. When I was social chairman of GAPA I routinely scheduled organizational brunches there.
Tangerine has developed a loyal crowd of "regulars" who know a good deal when they see it. Substantial portions of quality food at good prices. And everyone adores Fabiano, the hot Brazilian waiter who placed in the ice skating competition in the Gay Games in Chicago!!
Pros: Substantial servings, good food, reasonable prices.
Cons: Can get noisy if the restaurant is full.
