Review content:
If you are looking for a really challenging workout, have an open mind when the word "yoga" is used, and want to be pushed to your limit, then Ashtanga Yoga is just what you are looking for. There is only one Ashtanga Yoga studio in Reno and that is the Yoga Shack. A lot of people say they have had a bad experience at the studio because they don't think that this is what yoga is about. I just really like Ashtanga. Having practiced a few times with Sri K Patabi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga, I found the Yoga Shack to be pretty authentic. Patabi Jois is unrelenting and you are not allowed to make modifications to the given set of poses. Most people are not seeking this type of yoga. They want soft, slow and gentle and I can understand that. The Yoga Shack offers Mysore classes which are the traditional Ashtanga Practice (named after the city in India) with either some or no instruction offered. Beginner classes help to lay the foundation for the Mysore classes and focus on proper alignment and breathing. Lynne is the owner, has the most experience and she is the most demanding teacher at the studio. If you are training to visit India or work with Patabi Jois, his grandson, or long-time student/teachers take her classes.
I have practiced yoga for more than 8 years and have completed a 200 hour teacher certification. I have taught Ashtanga and Power Yoga for almost 3 years and also enjoy taking as many workshops along the west coast with different teachers as I can fit into my schedule. From my experience and preferences, I would recommend the classes at the Yoga Shack to those who are looking for a challenge. Who knows you may even enjoy yourself.
Pros: Authentic Ashtanga, good informational website, helpful staff
Cons: None - working hard is good
