Review content:
I had a horrible experience at the Orange City store. I brought my 14 year old son with, who has very brown skin. The entire time we were there (15-20 minutes) we were blatantly followed by an employee. After I told my son that they were watching us to see if we were stealing, probably because of the color of his skin, he noticed it immediately, too. After checking out, I asked to speak to the manager, Jody. I said that I had finally, after 14 years old, been able to show my son how some stores will target him and follow him to make sure he doesn't steal, based solely on the color of his skin. NEVER have I experienced such blatant profiling. The manager did not apologize for our experience, did not deny we were being followed. Instead, she only justified it by saying theft was a huge problem there. She denied we were being followed because of my son's color. I asked why we were being monitored, she said no one looks like a thief, but that it's based on ""attitude"". When I asked if I (dressed professionally and just browsing the store) was projecting an attitude that I was going to shoplift, she said no. So how to explain the employee's very obvious stalking of us? \r \r This store was my (white) husband's favorite store in the area, but we have both decided to take our business elsewhere. It's too bad, because my husband really did like this store. However, we cannot tolerate any type of racial profiling towards anyone, much less our children. I'm surprised since it's been my experience that health food stores are more tolerant than other stores--but that tolerance apparently doesn't extend to people of color at Debbie's Health Food Store in Orange City, FL.
