We've been in Austin for 18 months, and we love Hoover's. Hoover Alexander's statement on his website is an accurate reflection of his restaurant. The food represents a great variety of soul/home cooking. I gotta admit that I actually changed my own meatloaf recipe after eating Hoover's . . . and I thought mine was already the bomb! The j*rk chicken is exactly like the j*rk my Jamaican friend in Dallas used to make. My man still prefers my cream gravy over Hoover's, but my gravy has made men propose before, so it's a high, high standard!
They have daily specials, which are not really price specials so much as they are rotating items not on the regular menu. Butter beans and cabbage are two of those, and they are EXACTLY like my own mama's. I always order those when they appear.
I have to mention the weekend breakfast: we go every Sunday when we are off work. It is a real soul food kind of breakfast. Etouffee and fried catfish are among the choices! And the pancake menu includes sweet potato cakes, h*e cakes (for real!), and several others. There is nothing better for a weekend breakfast.
We are moving to San Antonio in a few months, and I am so relieved that we won't have to drive back to Austin for Hoover's. I hate to drive, but I had already decided that for our Sundays off, we would make that 90 minute drive (one-way) for breakfast or lunch at Hoover's. (Sorry for the asterick spellings in ""j*rk"" and ""h*e"", but those words were deemed ""inappropriate"", even though they are only used for food names. Pitiful.)
Pros: Meat n Three deal; weekend breakfast different & delicious.
Cons: Chicken and Dumplings too peppery, but my man disagrees.
