An Oasis of Relaxation 7/10/2009

I went to this studio recently while visiting my family in the area. It is a relaxing and nurturing experience in a peaceful environment. It was extremely helpful during a stressful time for me. I love how they keep you posted by email with all their new offerings! I only wish I didn't live so far away. The classes all sound so interesting. I will be back to Yoga West next time I'm in Katy. Pros: A relaxing and nurturing yoga experience more

A place of tranquility/serenity for your life 4/30/2009

Three years ago, I discovered this wonderful Yoga studio in Katy - Yoga West. I had made a decision to try yoga, but I did not want to join a gym, the Y - I was looking for a place that had a schedule with various classes and times that suited my schedule, especially since I work during the day - I needed a place that offered night classes. I decided to check out Yoga West and boy, that was one of the best decisions I have made in my life! From the first second I walked into the studio, I felt welcomed and was helped by not only the instructors but by the students as well. Needless to say, I made it a point to make a couple of classes a week and about 6 months later found myself going to AS MANY classes as I could fit into my schedule!!!! Now I am a ""regular"" at the studio - \r \r Not only that, I made a huge decision a couple of months ago and that was to take the Yoga Alliance Teacher Training Certification at Yoga West. Never in my life would have guessed I would go for it & get my yoga teaching certification - but here I am about to graduate!!! I still can't believe it.\r \r Walking into the Yoga West studio 3 years ago was the best decision I made in my life - not only did it change my life, it changed my lifestyle, the way I look at life, people, it changed my health, my spirituality - everything. The practice of yoga has come to be a part of who I am and who I am to be in this life. It has done so many things for me physically, mentally, spiritually, the list is endless. On top of that, I have met some of the most amazing people, the instructors and fellow students - all of whom are beautiful, wonderful, gracious individuals - to know that we all share the wonderful energy/prana of the gift of yoga is incredible and very hard to put into words.\r \r Thank you Yoga West for all you have given to me, to the other students, to the community......I am so grateful to have taken that courageous step 3 years ago by walking into your studio - not knowing what would happen. Thank you for the space, the friendship, the serenity.....for giving the Katy area a wonderful place to practice yoga. Pros: Workshops, kids yoga, yoga for recovery, prenatal yoga, etc. Cons: Traffic on Fry, but then again traffic is everywhere!!! more

Yoga for Everyone! 4/29/2009

I have been attending Yoga West for about 3 1/2 years now & I consider myself very fortunate to have this ""wellspring of sanity""in my life. It is very close to my neighborhood in far West Houston/Katy and for a ""small suburban studio"" the level of service they offer is nothing short of amazing. There are many different classes, several levels and styles to choose from, all taught by wonderful Yoga Alliance certified teachers who hail from a variety of backgrounds (ALL are very welcoming & knowledgable - you'll be hard pressed to choose a favorite). \r \r The best way I can tell you about the place is to say that you need to go ahead and try a class there! To accomplish this, it is best to go first to their website. There are usually specials for first-time clients so don't miss these - you may need to print out a coupon or whatever. (Cool!) Okay, so then you click on the ""Schedule and Fees"" tab and from there click on the link that says ""See this week's schedule of classes..."" (its purple). \r \r Next, choose a class that fits your schedule and suits your level and what you're looking for (note: the Basics/Beginner classes are good for people who've never tried yoga, but that doesn't always mean they're ""easy."" You can get a great workout!) Alright. So then, put on some stretchy/comfy clothes, wear shoes that are easy to kick off (since yoga is practiced barefoot), bring a mat if you have one (if not you can rent one at the studio for $3 or buy one there) and plan to show up about 10 -15 minutes before that class starts so you can get registered. (And don't forget your coupon!)\r \r Once you've tried a class there you'll see what an amazing form of exercise yoga can be - it is perfect for relieving stress and calming the mind, all while working up a sweat in a way that is non-competetive, non-impact and very loving to the joints, the muscles, the spine and (of course) the soul. I feel the same way after a yoga class as I do after a really great massage - if not better. Seriously! Yoga is a perfect complement for other sports like cycling, running, weight-lifting, golf, etc. because it increases your strength and flexibility in ways you wouldn't believe until it starts happening to you. And then there are those of us who just might take up golf, cycling, running, weight-lifting, etc. in order to see how it improves our YOGA practice... LOL \r \r Either way - whoever you are, Yoga West is a wonderful place to begin to connect - or to re-connect - with the inner wisdom that your body holds as beautiful secrets just waiting for you to unfold. If you don't know what I'm talking about, trust me, you will. :D\r \r Hope to see you soon, I get there as often as I can. Namaste! Catherine\r Pros: Great teachers & classes! A super community for ALL levels! Cons: No full-time secretary so ""stopping by"" doesn't always work. more

Best Yoga in the West 1/16/2009

My whole life I have been an avid fan of exercise. I was walking several miles per week, but as I was finishing out my years of being forty I felt like I needed something more. I did not have the desire for high impact aerobics anymore and to be honest I was looking for something that could calm me with all the benefits of a weight room. I remember laughing at myself for even thinking that something like this existed. Not being familiar with yoga I did know that yoga was what I was looking for. I had driven by Yoga West for years and each time with curiosity. One day I stopped by and met Kristen, the owner, she told me a little bit about yoga and invited me to attend a week of free yoga. After my first day I was sold. So for my 50th birthday present I gave myself a membership. Just to show you how much yoga vocabulary I did not know....for weeks I thought the name of the instructor on Tuesdays was 'Vinyassa"" :) In three months will be my two year anniversary at Yoga West. There has not been a class that I have not enjoyed. I quickly learned that yoga is a journey experienced differently by everybody. Although I am new to yoga I never felt like a beginner. I have come a long way since my first wobbly down dog and look forward to the journey of a head stand someday. I also have to mention all the great guest instructors and special events that Yoga West hosts. There is always something fun going on and it is great to be a part of it. Pros: Class variety, instructors, convenient Cons: Fry Road can be a bit congested at times more
