Authentic Sushi in Easley?!?! Shinjirarenai! (I can't believe it!) 5/30/2008

Having lived in Japan for three years, Wasabi Japanese Restaurant reminded me of my days in Japan eating sushi in Tokyo's Tsukiji District. The eight piece sushi set (pieces of uncooked and fresh fish on top of small handfuls of vinegar flavored white rice) came with a choice of California roll or Tuna roll and a side of miso soup and side salad with ginger dressing was filling and as good of sushi that I've eaten since returning to the Deep South. The other members in my part also lived in Japan and enjoyed bento style entrees of pork cutlet (Tonkatsu) and chicken cutlet. For appetizers, we all shared green soybeans (edamame) and tall 22 oz. bottles of Kirin Draft Beer. The dining experience was awesome and the Japanese sushi man and his American staff were diligent and hospitable. To top things off, the low sodium soy sauce (green cap bottle) was a nice touch and an authentic product from Chiba-ken, Japan. Whether you are a rare bird like me who craves the raw stuff or want the Japanese down home cooking of breaded pork, chicken and other tempura items, Wasabi Japanese Restaurant in Easley will fill the void. I tip my hat to the sushi man who ventured off to of all places, Pickens County, where he brings authentic top-notch sushi without the knife throwing and fire show (only seen once in Japan and that was in Okinawa). A word to the wise, this place was reasonably priced but not to be mistaken for another good quality Japanese restaurant, Joy of Tokyo, found in Greenville. Bring your wife or girlfriend for that special celebration and don't forget to bring your wallet. Pros: reasonably priced menu, authentic sushi that Japanese people eat and 20 minutes from downtown Greenville Cons: Prices could be perceived as high by locals who have likely not been to Japan to experience fine Japanese dining. more
