Fantastic Japanese 6/18/2010

Umami is a really expensive Japanese place, so try to go here for happy hour when they have discounted rolle, food, and beverages. Their kobe sliders are the best sliders I have ever eaten. I even have friends who claim it is the best burger they have ever had. A must try! Pros: Great happy hour Cons: Expensive otherwise more

Great happy hour for sushi & wine 12/3/2009

Celebrated my bday there with a group of girl friends. we went for the happy hour (5:30-7) and had excellent service & delicious melt-in-your-mouth sushi. the 1/2 price bottle of wines is a great deal! i will keep coming back. Pros: happy hour, ambiance, service, tasty sushi Cons: little pricey more

Atmosphere! Great Sushi 3/6/2009

I recently went to Umami on a busy thursday night. Was very impressed with the reservation system. I placed my reservation online they confirmed with an email and called me the day of the event. Umami is set right off Union Street in the heart of the marina. The hostess knew exactly who I was and quickly took my date and I to our table. The service was prompt; the food was terrific. I asked the server to surprise me with two rolls and was amazed with the selections. To sum Umami up it is a wonderful place for a date and serves great sushi. Pros: Original Rolls Great Service more

Lovely Experience 11/15/2007

I truly enjoyed every aspect of Umami. I was a bit skeptical about going to the marina but you know what this place took that skeptasism away. Food, Service, Ambiance all 5 stars in my book. Pros: Everything more

Something Made Me Really Sick! 10/20/2007

Shortly after we ate at Umami, I started feeling tired and a little nauseated. 40 mins later, I had my head sticking out of the car door. I threw up every 20 mins from 10 pm until 4 am. My stomach pains also kept me up until 6 am. I won't go into what other symptoms I had. Anyways, it was hell. What did I order? Sprite, Yamato Roll, Edamame, Spider Roll, Spicy Ahi Roll, and Unagi and Cucumber Roll. Everything tasted good, except the Edamame. It was super chilled and tasted too undercooked. I did not eat everything, just in case you were wondering. I ate a few bites of all the sushi rolls and about 30 edamame. The atmosphere was very trendy, dark, and loud from lots of people talking. The service was decent, but our waitress, Mariko (printed name on receipt), poured water into my Sprite glass, and also rang my Sprite up as Coke, which was what my co-worker had. Our waitress boxed up our leftovers but did not put any condiments in the bags. I asked for wasabi, ginger, soy sauce, and chopsticks three different times before she finally gave me everything. All the leftovers went to waste because I didn't want to take the chance of getting sick again. It took me two whole days to feel better. And now, three days later, I am finally almost back to my normal health. Would I eat at Umami again? I am scared to go back. But I guess, you can get sick from eating at lots of places, not only at this restaurant. Pros: Decor Cons: Unsafe food, not so good service, and parking. more

Very disappointed 9/26/2007

I took friends from out of town a few weeks ago. On a Friday night, they sat 16 of us at 9:30 (our reservation time). Fifteen minutes after we sat down, our waitress came by to tell us that the kitchen was closing and so we needed to do all of our ordering. We orderded a lot more sushi, but then she came back 10 minute later to tell us that they'd run out of RICE! Our only option was to order $20+ dinner entrees (or more apps that we'd already done). They shouldn't sit large parties at that hour if they're not willing to feed them, or they should at least warn you when you sit to start ordering. The little sushi that we ate was fine, but most of us left hungry. It was a very disappointing experience. Pros: food, atmosphere Cons: service more

Best Japanese, Best Sushi @ Umami. 7/3/2007

WOW, this place nocked my socks off. I went in expecting another average asian marina spot, and got one of the most outstanding dining experiences ever. Sushi was right on, all the small plates rocked. Service and interior could not have been better. I can't wait to go back. more

Great Food and Drinks 5/16/2007

I grew up in San Francisco and I've been coming to this location since I was a kid (it was a Japanese restaurant forever) and I have to admit I was a little bummed when I found out ownership was changing hands. Since this place opened late last year I have visited a handful of times to either have a sit down dinner with some friends or to grab a quick bite and a beer at the bar. I have to admit, for someone that went in there ready to pick it apart, this new ownership group has done an outstanding job. They made all the right changes to the decor and the menu (which started out very good) has steadily improved with time. I went down last Saturday night around 11pm to grab a drink and the bar was packed! It was a great crowd, super friendly and fun to hang out with. After talking to a manager I found out they opened up the downstairs bar space in the hopes of fostering a fun, hip, late night bar scene on the weekends. Well if its for dinner or for weekend drinking and socializing, Umami has won me over and I'll be going back for many nights to come. more

Nice Space, Ok Food, Major Service Issues 2/1/2007

I went to Umami with a party of 5 on a Wednesday, and of course being a new hot spot, seating took about 30 minutes. No Problem. While waiting, I ordered drinks for everyone, and the bartender confused the order. I explained I had one too many glasses of wine, and one too few cocktails, but for some reason, it took several attempts for her to understand what I meant. I then asked her to hang on to my credit card, in case we wished to order more drinks, to which she nodded and handed me my card and the bill on the spot. Once seated, things went a little better, until the waiter asked if we were ready for the check, to which we informed him two big plates had not been served yet. He apologized, brought the plates, and even gave us a free large bottle of Asahi. Once the bill came, one person put cash down, and two of us requested the remainder be split equally. The waiter seemed confused, but after explaining it 3 times, he seemed to figure it out. When we got our credit card bills, it turns out the restaurant charged one credit card for $15 more than the other. We were completely baffled as to why they couldn't figure something out as simple as splitting a check. The service was never rude or dismisive, just ... confused. Pros: Sleek, modern interior Cons: Major service hiccups more

Horrible Service!! 1/31/2007

So, I have been to Umami twice since its opening. The first time, I was seated 45 minutes after my reservation. To top it off, the recommendations given were over salted or tasteless. I highly recommend avoiding the main courses. I just attended again tonight. Unfortunately, I walked out infuriated. Not only were we seated after our reservation time, despite open tables, it took 50 minutes to take our order. Even the edamame took 35 minutes to arrive. Are you kidding me?!?! Then we kept getting told our sushi was coming when it came out first. Our salads took a whopping 55 minutes and arrived last. The food was tolerable, but certainly not worth the wait. Finally, I was double charged on my credit card! The whole endeavor took 3 hours. ON A WEDNESDAY!!! Who has that kind of time?! I do not recommend this place except for drinks and to sit around waiting for nothing! Pros: good chicken salad Cons: everything else, service atrocious more

Best food experience; Advance reservation recommended 1/29/2007

I went there with my wife to celebrate our anniversary. It was great experience, great food and highly recommended. Too bad the service it way too slow as they're understaff handling the big party upstair. Pros: Great food; great atmosphere; Cons: hard to find parking; slow service even tough they're very friendly and nice more

Crushing 1/17/2007

3 important things when eating out, 1: the food. 2: the atmosphere and 3: the people. Let me tell you Umami has nailed all three. I have eaten here 4 times now and typically with some many great options in SF I am not a repeat offender but. . . . . Pros: Small plates are easy to share, spectacular people watching, tasty cocktails Cons: such a good time you will not go to other restaurants more

Umami - a flavor fav 1/10/2007

The Umami experience begins with an inviting izakaya-style dining atmosphere that is flavor for the scenes. The journey begins through natural elements as you first encounter shoji style frames that home live orchids and greenery. A dramatic piece of live-edge wood (and a smiling hostess) guides diners upstairs, where the food journey across Asia begins. Young, talented chef, Sam Josi (who's hot Mexican menu is nothing short of awesome at Mamacita) brings a education sequence of various dishes from Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and Korea. Balancing the courses is best left in the hands of the servers who will guide you through the menu and recommend sake pairings to go with favorites such as kanpachi carpaccio, yellow curry crusted mahi, an incredible duck okonomiyaki. Palate cleanse with the green papaya salad before finishing with the Korean bi bim pap - lovely to say and lovely to eat! Understated with a commitment to bring izakaya-style dining to the Marina, Umami is a welcomed new favorite. more

Perfect for entertaining clients 1/4/2007

I came into town to entertain clients and was recommended Umami as a ""New Spot"" to try. The food was incredible, the wine was paired beautifully by our server with the food, and the ambience was uniquely suited for an entertaining environment. I recommend letting the server bring out their array of foods and wines as they see fit. Pros: Quality of food, service, and ambience Cons: Not open for lunch more

A gem in a feild of rocks 12/23/2006
