Best Thai food - great buffet 10/19/2008

My husband and I discovered this little former fast-food restaurant about 8 years ago when they opened. I had eaten Thai food at one other restaurant and was not impressed. When I had their food, I was hooked! The buffet is wonderful and the menu entrees are even better. The best spring rolls ever! I always have the tapioca dessert. The couple who own Thai Cafe have worked very hard and long, long hours to make it the best. I have never seen anyone mistreated and it is a family restaurant (lots of babies and young children). Whomever wrote those mean reviews must work at other Thai places.\r \r We have taken a lot of different people there and it has become their favorite, also. more

Best Thai EVERRRRR!!!!!! 8/1/2008

I was first introduced to this quaint little cafe years ago and was hooked. The bestttttt Thai food ever. The waitstaff alternates from time to time, but the owners are still the same nice couple I met a long time ago. The only thing that bothered me was when I invited friends to try the lunch buffet and there was barely anything left! But the little food that they did have won them over. Other than that, they have awesome spring rolls, the most delicious soup with the best presentation. The best pad woon sen. Thai food is so light and filling, but it doesn't leave you stuffed and greasy. They grow their own herbs and chilis right outside the place. During your meal you're entertained by Thai music videos...cool. I will never look at Chinese food the same. Thai won me over. Pros: the best freakin' awesome Thai food ever Cons: just make sure you come on time to the lunch buffet more

Not recommended 7/6/2008

I recently tried Thai Cafe out with a friend after reading all the great reviews on this site. To my disappointment, I found that this place was not even worth leaving the house for. The food was lame; my pad thai was very bland and forgettable. As for the service, they sat us at a table then asked us to move and did the same to the people sitting at the table across from us. When we left, the waitress followed us to the car and asked in a rude voice if we had paid. Maybe if she did her job and came by our table she would have seen that we gave her a tip she didn't even deserve. Also, the atmosphere was that of a cheap diner. It was just overall a really bad experience. However, if you like cheap buffets with bland food and bad service you may like it. Cons: overpriced cheap food, pathetic service, no atmosphere more

Excellent Thai food. 6/5/2008

I went there with my wife and in laws for dinner on memorial day and it far surpassed my expectations. The Tom Yum soup was excellent and the Panang curry flavor was superlative. I've eaten at Thai restaurants all over the world and this is right up there with the best of them.\r I live in Austin but will be visiting San Antonio a lot more often :) more

Excellent Thai 5/3/2008

Authentically Thai. Nice buffet, but the ala carte items off the menu are superb! Highly recommend. We've been there at least a couple of dozen times in the past few years. Pros: The superb quality of the food. Cons: None, even after all of these years. more

Great Thai Food!! 4/26/2008

First I am concerned about the lady and her baby. Sounds more like competition to me. Why do I say that? I have been going to this restaurant for many years. I pretty much know the owner, his wife and the waitresses. I cannot imagine something like this happening. Of course there are those times that a bad night can happen, but the hair thing just makes me wonder.\r \r I lived in Thailand for 3 years. Grew to love the food. I have had Thai food at most all the restaurants here in town. There are two that stick out. This one and the Thai Restaurant on Callaghan and Babcock. They both have the best in this cuisine. I know for a fact that the really good Thai food cooks in this town are both located at these two restaurants. I am also married to a Thai woman and we thought about opening a restaurant, but we do not know how to cook as well as the cooks at these two restaurants. I even went out of the way to hire one from Thailand. I got the government to sponsor a person because this area was declared an area where there were not enough qualified Thai cooks. That fell through when the person I wanted turned out to have a criminal record. So my dream died because there is no way I would be able to compete without a good cook like they have here at the Thai Cafe and Thai Restaurant. \r \r I would not concern myself over the person who had a problem with the child. Could be that the perfect little baby was not so perfect that night. My guess.\r \r I have always had good service and the waitresses are really kind. I do watch them as others come into the restaurant and they seem to treat everyone kindly. So I cannot understand what went wrong if it truly was something wrong.\r \r Well a group of us are meeting today to eat, I have to go now. Please try it and decide for yourself. If you have never had Thai food, try going when they have a buffet so you can try a little of each dish. more

Yes, this restaurant is very awful 4/23/2008

This restaurant is really very terrible and not welcome baby. I strongly recommend not go to this restaurant.\r \r \r \r My friend and I have been there before. The waitress has attitude and they give you a face if they think the tip is not good. \r \r Beside, they complained my freind didn't know how to teached her 18 months baby, just becuase her baby messed up the food and floor. I don't believe any one who can make a 18 months baby not messing up the floor and food. My friend holds a Doctoral degree in Education. Her husband , a pediatrician, hold two doctoral degrees (MD,PhD). They are very angry with this. \r \r \r more

This restaurant is very terrible 4/23/2008

This restaurant is very terrible. Please must not visit this restaurant.\r \r Their food has hairs inside. I told them and they didn't care. \r \r \r They have attitude and they don't welocme baby.\r In addition, if you give them the tip is not good enough what they think, the boss and waitress show you a face right away more

Best Thai food...EVER!!! 2/21/2008

To be honest with you, I thought I would hate Thai food. My father insisted on me trying this delectable cuisine, but I kept refusing. Until one day he told me about this AMAZING restaurant called Thai Cafe, he had eaten at with my mom and sister. I was upset about going, until I set foot in that MAGNIFICENT restaurant. As I smelled the aroma of SPLENDID spices and DELECTABLE dishes, I couldn't resist. I took a glance at he buffet, and I didn't wait one minute. I jumped to it, and found me a place in line. The buffet consisted of spring rolls. pad thai, sticky rice, veggies, chicken wings, cream cheese rolls, other meat dishes, soups, and the list goes on. Once I lfted the fork to my mouth, then toungue, my taste buds went off the wall. They were so pleased, and so was my stomach. I highly reccomend the eggplant! The spices, the base of the dish, and the eggplant itself was so SCRUMPTIOUS! If you are not much of vegetable eater, there is much more to choose from. The cream cheese rolls are a package of joy. You can eat them for dessert or during your meal. The cream cheese rolls compliment the rest of the meal. The sticky rice is SWEET and SATISYING! I don't know what they put in their dishes, but I am dying to find out. Whenever my family and I go to San Antonio, we eat at Thai Cafe. Thai Cafe will keep you coming back for more. The price per individual and as a group, is inexpensive and family affordable. Thai Cafe is a place for people who like to try new things, and have a passion for Asian Cuisine. more

There is no vietnamese cuisine here! 10/5/2005

You really have to go out of your way to get Vietnamese food in this town! After driving halfway across town to satiate my need for bowl of Vietnamese Bun I found no Vietnamese on the menu at all! The Thai food was tasty, however. But, I'll stay on my side of town if I want Thai. Pros: friendly service, authentic cuisine Cons: no vietnamese food more

Wonderful 12/1/2002

When we try something new, my wife and I read the recommendations from other readers. This restaurant was highly rated and when we did try it this past weekend we were not dissapointed. The buffet for lunch was wonderful. The staff were friendly and courteous. The food was delicious, well-prepared and well-presented. Nothing fancy about the decor, but it is organized and very clean. Once can tell that the owners keep the place in order. Finally, one final note, it was inexpensive. We will definitely visit this place again. Pros: very clean, inexpensive, wonderful food more

Very Authentic 11/16/2002

Great food, big portions and good service. This is a great restaurant to try if you were ever wondering what authentic Thai food tasted like. Pros: great food, very authentic Cons: small restaruant more

The ONLY place for the BEST Thai 10/14/2002

Thai Cafe surpasses every expectation I have. The food is authentic, aromatic, spicy, but heat levels can be adjusted to preference. Be aware, if you tell them hot and spicy.. it WILL be both! (hot enough to burn away the worse migraine) They have a terrific buffet, offering several vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. But don't limit yourself only to the buffet, order from the menu and discover even more flavor-filled entrees. Don't overlook the fresh soups, split a pot or make it a meal. Prices are reasonable for large portions, but don't be afraid to order appetizers and dessert too! The spring rolls are terrific, and the sticky rice and coconut ice cream is a wonderful combination! I have eaten at Thai restaurants around the country and this is the best one both in freshness and flavor! Pros: Best tasting, Spicy, Inexpensive Cons: Closed Sunday more

Best IN town 8/8/2002

It is an amazing place to go to. The service is fast and good. The food is amazing. It is the best thai food in town by far. The food is soo good and authentic. more

Best Thai in USA 7/11/2002

I have been to many Thai restaurants around the country and most are not a tenth as good as this place. The panang is the best you will find anywhere, their appetizers are fresh and wonderful, curries are flavorful and spicy, and the sticky rice is heavenly. And, in almost five years I have frequented this place, the quality has not changed. Thai cafe is not just the best Thai restaurant in SA (and so far in my travels the country as well), it is one of the best restaurants overall in the city. I have brought many people to this place over the past 5 years since I was introduced to the place, and they all agree it is hands down the best Thai restaurant in town. more
