Great food, company, and hookah 1/2/2010

About me (so you know where my opinion is coming from) 21 year old local community college student who enjoys the bay areas bars, clubs, and lounges. I've been coming here for several years now and Mr. Gures has done something amazing. When I was a local student his back courtyard used to be storage (if i remember correctly). Since then he has put a part of himself into the entire restaurant. The front of the bistro (indoor dining area) is very welcoming and carries the air of authenticity which conveys what type of food and service you will receive (which is excellent food and service). The back of the restaurant, used for dining and as a lounge, offers a nice outdoor courtyard environment. They have a bar, hookah with excellent sheesha, and an amazing ambiance. The back is personally my favorite part of the bistro since I spend most of my time with a hookah and get their Turkish coffee or tea (as well as dinner some times). The back courtyard/lounge is constantly evolving. When I first visited the bistro the courtyard was a nice cozy welcoming environment where if you were hoping to be social it was hard not to meet the person next to you and if you weren't feeling like meeting new people you could have your evening how you preferred. Since then they have put in fancy fire pits (I'm not sure what to call them because they're not the traditional fire pit but they're really cool) and there's a small waterfall against the entrance wall. The hosts and hostesses he hires are friendly and on the ball, they will make sure to check in with you regularly if you need anything. The only times I feel missed by them is when its busy and they're checking in with everyone (this is where a customer like myself has to be realistic and know that I'm not the only person there). Breakdown: Food: Excellent Hookah & sheesha: Haven't found a better deal for price and quality Service: A+ with a smile Ambiance: Relaxing, social Seating: Comfortable I hope to see more of you there! Pros: Friendly service, good food, excellent shessha Cons: If you try hard enough you can find a chilly spot more

New owner awesome food 11/23/2009

I just found out that this place is been subleased for 3 years and that’s the reason they can not change the restaurants name??? Anyway We were approached by a young gentlemen and were seated immediately. We ordered mixed appetizers as starters, Humus tasted awesome also the rest of the apetizers.(Finished everything in less than 5 minutes, by the way the bread is made fresh in front of your eyes and it tastes unbelievable good, yummmy ).I ordered the mixed kebab(asked to be made mainly from their doner kebab) so did my wife.1-The doner kebab (Gyros) is the best ever made gyro i ever had in my LIFE.Woooow visited that place so far the fifth time and they are very consistent with their kebabs. Allover the food is very fresh and very appetizing. Good job, keep up the good work so i will come again, again and again. Pros: Best Medditerenian Restaurant in BAY AREA Cons: Everythink tasted heavenly yummy more

The most horrible service ever!!! Do not recommend this place!! 8/31/2007

I found a hair in the Imam Bayildi, and the waitress blamed me that I put into the plate. She told me that I did it maybe because I didn?t want to pay for my dinner!?? I almost didn?t touch the plate?. I do not recommend this place!!! The most horrible service ever!!! Cons: the most horrible service ever!!! more

I Thought i was on a tv show and it was a prank, no one served us when we sat down, we waited 10 mins, the food was god awful and the barteder didnt know how to make a bombay martini. We got the food and i had a bite and i was disgusted. maybe the restuarnt was having a bad day, but i wont give it a 2nd chance. Pros: We got to sit down Cons: Taverna Bisto The Restaurant more

More than meets the eye. 10/28/2006

This place was full of surprises. It doesn't particularly stand out while walking down the strip, but once inside, the ambiance was fabulous. It felt very intimate without piling tables on top of each other. Plus the walls and the furniture gave a warm vibe to the place. The wait staff was not only attentive but very friendly when talking with customers. While we were waiting for our dinner, a belly dancer appeared. Needless to say, it was a fun way to pass the time. Now for our dinner....it was incredibly flavorful. I had something that resembled a vegetable stew, and I cannot even begin to describe all the flavors my mouth experienced. (The best part -- it's even better the next day!) As far as icing on the cake, there is a nice little patio/garden area outside, and a larger banquet room. I can't wait to try the other dishes! Pros: Friendly, yummy food Cons: Parking more

Amazing Amazing, Amazing! 6/14/2006

As soon as I enter the restaurant, I was simply amazed. The atmosphere of this place is truly priceless. The design of the restaurant is very elegant and upscale, yet at the same time I feel like I can bring my entire family here. Somehow, it catches your eye for both a family and an upscale restaurant. They even have a beautiful garden in the rear of the restaurant to sit and eat. Not to mention a table outside for the view of the strip! This depending on the customer can be romantic or a pure entertainment. I event noticed a private room that can probably seat around 30 40 people. Along with the great food, it really brought a wonderful smile to my face. The service was amazing; all waiters were really friendly and eager to please. I even observed how they were dealing with other customers. There reaction, how the handled themselves and let me tell you the quality was there among all of them. Though I didnt know a thing about Mediterranean food, I - as any customer would ask the famous question "Well what do you recommended?" After a series of questions, they came to a recommendation of a lamb type dish. One word - Delicious! The presentation of this dish along with a great wine was a perfect balance to my taste buds. And not just me, as I got up to walk around and further more look over the place, being a chit chatter that I am, I managed to talk to some customers that were already eating there. There thoughts and remarks were all high caliber. Overall, this place really makes you want to come back for more. And trust me - as someone all the way from Union City (and these gas prices!) It's well worth it. As just a personal opinion, I think where you eat also set the mood for the next following event that takes place. People usually do a dinner and movie. And if you have a place that gives you great service, great food and a great smile then your next series of events will be pleasant. After eating there I just didnt want to go home! The excitement of this place completely took my restaurant experience to a much higher level. I highly recommend this place to anyone whos ready to be satisfied. Thank you Taverna! Pros: Great Great Service, excellent food, good parking Cons: None more

Bad service!!! 4/27/2006

I've never been in a restaurant with such poor service! The waiter was rude, incompetent and lazy. We left 30 minutes after we ordered, with no food, no drinks, no bread and no apologies. Cons: Service more

Good Falafel 1/13/2006

I've eaten here a few times now. I like their falafel wrap. Although the tortilla tends to be a bit dry, it's tasty. The falafel is usually warm and moist inside, and a little crunchy on the outside. Some of the other dishes may be hit or miss, based on my dining partner's experience. I recommend giving it a try. Pros: Nice atmosphere, decent pricing Cons: food quality varies more

Great selections and quality for families 8/19/2005

Taverna Gyros on So. Murphy Street is an excellent value for families. The restaurant is family friendly with friendly servers and great food for the adaults and the kids. Yes, they have a kids menu and an exceptional wine list for the adaults. If you havent tried Taverna, try it! Arc Pros: Baby changer in rest, kids menu, great wine value Cons: might call to reserve more

Not exactly greek 5/7/2005

We had 3 dishes: 1) The sampler as apetizer, which was average, really nothing serious to complain about. 2) The moussaka: meat is too salty. Dough on top is too thin and has too much pepper in it. The rice that goes with it is half cooked. 3) The casserole w/Chicken: not salted at all and soaked in oil. Tasteless. Pros: good parking, not too crowded, quiet Cons: food is not great more

Nice Place 12/22/2004

I've been going to Taverna For about a yerar now. The food is great, I recomend plates :chicken, Lamb / Beef, even the chicken kabab. The staff is very friendly. There is plenty of parking in the back of Taverna (they do have a back Entrance). They are open 7 days a week, they serve Brunch on weekends, lunch and dinner daily. Pros: Food, Parking more

Nice place to grab a bite 8/20/2004

Taverna Gyros is a nice place to grab a bite during lunch or to have a get-together during dinner. There is even belly dancing on thursday and saturday nights. The waiters are quite friendly and helpful. I recommend ordering dishes such as the delicious Greek Salad or the appetizers if you feel like eating light. The gyros and kebab wraps and plates are also tasty. I recommend ordering wraps and plates that have heavy meats such as the lamb and beef. The chicken is too light and does not complement the elements of a wrap. Inside the resteraunt one experiences a semi-formal environment. Outside seating feels much more casual and relaxed. Pros: Wraps, Dishes, Greek Salad, Value, Ambience more
