Yep, 4-star sushi in downtown Savannah, owned/operated by Japanese. 9/11/2008

Took my boss, a trainee, and a business guest to dinner at Sushi Zen on Whitaker St. Friday night 9/12/08. Enjoyed various appetizers, rolls, and nigiri sushi. My guests are Japanese, and all of us enjoyed it very much. We all agreed it was excellent sushi, and they were pleasantly surprised to find such high-quality sushi in Savannah. They enjoyed sitting in the traditional Japanese-style dining area upstairs, but were a little puzzled & amused at the mix of music being played. Not unpleasant, just a mix that seemed out of place (to them) in a traditional-style Japanese sushi bar. However, it seemed perfectly normal to me, given the eclectic mix of patrons and wait staff. They also appreciated the fact that the restaurant is Japanese-owned, and that the sushi was prepared by Japanese. The service was excellent. We were seated immediately, and our waitress was very knowledgeable, courteous, and attentive. The food was fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared and presented. Pros: Great location, austere (somewhat authentic) decor, good ambience due to eclectic mix of downtown SAV patrons. Cons: Can be crowded at times. more

Good after a Late night only 1/18/2008

This place is good after a night out in Savannah. Their claim to fame is that they stay open until 4 am. This place is decent. It is good, not great, nothing to rave about. Friends and I had a variety of rolls. My friends ordered many friend rolls that tasted exactly the same. However, the green mussel role was my favorite. The fresh seafood roles are nothing more than just okay. (I have had better store-bought sushi). Reserve this place for a late night sushi place only. Plus you can bring your drink in. Waitstaff was very accomodating and pleasant. Pros: Late night, good location Cons: Will not fix your sushi craving more

Terribly disappointing 7/17/2007

The only appeal of the downtown Sushi Zen is it?s convenient location and late night hours. Otherwise, please realize that this is likely the worst sushi restaurant in Savannah in terms of quality, value, service, and atmosphere. I've eaten here many times when friends insist because of convenience, but after my experience last night, I'm never going back. I ordered the sashimi dinner for $24.95. It included 3 pieces of tuna (maguro) and 3 pieces of salmon that were full of chewy tendon making them inedible. When I questioned our waiter about it he said, ?I could ask to replace them but it?s going to come out of my pocket?. Later he tried to convince me that I had gotten the fatty good stuff that most customers request when ordering sashimi. He cleary didn?t understand the difference between a piece of fatty toro tuna that melts in your mouth and a inproperly cut piece of tendon-ridden tuna. For sushi downtown try Wasabi on MLK or Sakura on Broughton. They are not without faults, but are so much better than Zen. Pros: convenient downtown location, late night hours Cons: overpriced mediocre quality sushi and misinformed, disinterested waitstaff more

Wonderful Sushi 8/3/2005

You might have to wait for a seat, and there is a minimum order on weekend evenings, but the food at Sushi Zen is wonderful and worth the crowding. I've eaten sushi all over the country and in Japan; Yoshi and Amy have some of the best for the price. They also have tempura and grilled food. If you are looking for romantic atmosphere, try their southside location on Eisenhower, the food is just as good and no more expensive. Pros: Excellent Food, Not Expensive Cons: Crowded, No Parking more

Disappointed 1/21/2004

I have eaten take out from Sushi-Zen on many occassions but the one time I ate in...I sat upstairs and had this woman to put her nasty foot on me and then we had tow ait forever to service and on top of that they had a minimum purchase in order to stay seated. The downstairs area that does not have a minimum was overcrowded with nowhere to sit and the host was very unhelpful. The food is average when it somes to Sushi bt then there are not many places to get Sushi in Savannah. Pros: Inexpensive, Take-out Cons: Dine-In, Service/Wait more
