Sauce pretty good, Chicken dinner is a rip off 3/6/2011

My wife ordered the chicken dinner, and got one leg, and a thigh, and two sides for $14. Rip off!. I had the Po' Boy sandwich which was good. The pork was moist, but could have had a little more sauce. Others had the full rack of ribs, and received a good portion, but you definitely had to pay a premium. The cornbread was really good. The macaroni and cheese was definitely Velveeta or similar and was not very good at all. The greens were okay, salty with a lot of garlic. I have never had a lot of garlic in my greens before prefer more original greens without the garlic. The sauce was good, but my wife's is better. Service was great! more

Lost It's Flavor 7/27/2009

I have been coming here since it first opened years ago next door. I have always enjoyed service, the food and most importantly the amazing flavors of everything I ate... Now not only have the prices gone up, the food tastes less than par. I ordered a sour dough cheeseburger with onion rings. My onion rings were coated in oil with little breading if any on some. They tasted like oil and had little onion flavor. The cheeseburger was not cut in half (it was on sliced bread) it was flavorless and quite dry. I am SOOO disappointed in my food, I have always really enjoyed the food here. I am guessing there may be a new chef because this was a brand new taste for a meal I have been buying for many years. Also I was told that a new owner has come aboard and they are taking many of the menu items off the menu. SOOO SAD! I hope things turn around for them soon! Pros: BBQ sauce, customer service, Location Cons: Flavor, Onion Rings, Menu more

Smokin Oakies made 7 on my Lifelong List of Great Restaurants 1/3/2009

The Memphis Mex list is the best. I am no food expert but my dinner which included a scrumptious enchilada casserole, was one of the best ever! Whenever I want Mexican food I will dine at Smokin Oakies. Pros: Tasted great - I devoured every morsel Cons: Tasted great- I devoured every morsel -I should have eaten less more

Great service, great prices, great food!!! 7/21/2008

I went there the first time a couple weeks ago for dinner and got the BBQ chicken sandwich and a salad: the sandwich was HUGE, i could definitely only finish half, and it was GREAT. Their BBQ sauce leans more toward sweet than smoky, and hardly resembles anything you'd buy at the store (it's not very thick, but it tastes great). The salad was okay, nothing to write home about. I'd go for the mac & cheese next time. I was so impressed with the BBQ though (and especially the prices for a BBQ place) that I brought back a party of 16 the next night. After all of us sampling from each other's plates, I've probably now tried most of what's on the menu. The bread pudding is AMAZING, their breakfast plates are great (and served all day long!) and the mashed potatoes are insane. Burgers are giant and hearty, and you should try the deep-fried pickles...soooo good. Needless to say, if you're on a diet, you should give it up for one day and check this place out. Between the great food, the live music and how comfortable this small restaurant is, it's a definite must! Pros: not too busy to get great service on weekends, excellent prices for meat, great value, great ambiance Cons: it's not near any main downtown area more

Grocery Shortage 5/25/2008

I have been here three times but I won't be going back. First time the salad had all kinds of goodies in it (cucumbers, croutons etc) last time it had two pickles on top and thats it!! What happened?? I had a piece of chicken that was only the back with all bones NO MEAT. Then the desert came and the waiter said ""sorry we are out of whipped cream but here is your cheesecake"". NO EXCUSE there is a Safeway not even a half a block away. Get off your butts and get over there and get some whipped cream, cucumbers, croutons and chicken! I guess if you visit this establishment you might want to ask them if they are STOCKED UP ON THEIR GROCERYS. more

Bad Food and Even Worse Service 4/15/2008

I had dinner in Smokin OAkies the other night and must say, I am glad Back 40 is just down the street. Between the horrible service from the owner, Angela Renghini and the tough dry ribs, I couldn't understand how they still remain in business. The owner was extremely rude when I tried to alert her to the fact that our dinners were quite tasteless and dry. She accused us of not knowing what we were speaking about, that she had been in the business since birth. Not only didn't she offer to replace the meal, she didn't even offer a refund. Everyone is entitled to having a bad day but with service and food such as this, she may be having many more to come. Pros: Location Cons: The owners attitude and the poor service more

Hunting For Good BBQ 6/28/2007

I checked through city search and had heard from a friend that this BBQ place had recently expanded so I thought I would check it out last weekend. I have to say i really liked the place. Very comfortable and clean. TV and Live Blues music but yet the place was very mellow. The staff was very friendly and you could see that other customers felt at home. I can tell the place is run by family or like family. Their menu is so big. It took me a while to decide. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner all day. I had these great fried calamari for aptzr. then ordered a 3 meat platter that came with cornbread and 2 sides. ( i knew i wouldnt finish it) the baby back ribs where very tender, all the meat came off the bone, the brisket good and the pulled pork was way good. the potato salad like grandmas and the coleslaw fresh. i had an excellent meal and experience. Im coming back for breakfast. i might try the chicken fried steak and gravy or eggs benedicts. thumbs up all the way. I recommend you give it try. Pros: all good Cons: all good more

OH BABY! BEST BABY BACK RIBS AND LIVE MUSIC 3/21/2007

I HEARD THIS PLACE HAD AWESOME FOOD SO ON FRIDAY MY FRIEND AND I DECIDED TO CHECK THEM OUT. I WAS CRAVING RIBS SO I DECIDED TO TRY ALL 3! I GOT A 3 MEAT PLATTER WITH BEEF RIBS, SPARE RIBS AND BABY BACK RIBS. THE BABY BACKS WHERE MY FAVORITE. SUPER TENDER AND FALLING OFF THE BONE. THE SAUCE WAS AMAZING. LITTLE SWEET, LITTLE TANGY, LITTLE SPICY AND NOT TOO SMOKY. I HAD THEIR MAC AND CHEESE AND CRAB GUMBO AS MY SIDES. MY FRIEND HAD THE PULLED PORK PO BOY AND HE SAID THAT IT WAS AWESOME TOO. WOW. REALLY GOOD STUFF. OH AND THEY WERE PLAYING LIVE MUSIC THAT WAS VERY GOOD. THIS IS A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD SPOT. VERY COMFORTABLE AND GOOD SERVICE. Pros: FOOD-MUSIC-SERVICE more

don't do it 3/18/2007

wow what can i say....this is probably the worst bbq i have had. i went there hoping for the best. the sides were o k and the service was fine. i was there for the meat though. i had st louis ribs that were so tough you could drive a nail with them. my father had pulled pork. we could not taste the smoke in any of the foods. i did not finnish the plate and gave the food away. i guess i will stay home to make the best que in the bay area! Pros: place was nice Cons: the price and the food more

Great Environment! 3/2/2007

I found out about this place because they were passing out samples. This is the best kept secret in COntra COsta County! \r \r Their Gumbo is amazing. The ribs fell off the bone, and they have a great micro beer selection! What more could you want! Pros: nice restaurant/ friendly people/ good food more

OINK OINK 11/10/2006

This place has THE BEST pork burrito! The homemade crab chowder was excellent as well. Go in, stock up and pig out! Pros: Food is AWESOME more

SMOKIN! 10/29/2006

I have been coming here for years- breakfast lunch and dinner. While all meals have always been exceptional, I must say that since they have moved, I have been even more impressed. The two owners (girls) designed and built the new restaurant themselves. The new place is wonderful! Every detail has been thought of right ""up"" to their fans..... You'll understand if you go in there.\r \r The food quality is excellent, the service is great, and they certainly get to know most of their customers by name. \r \r These are the kind of establishments that make me proud to live in Pleasant Hill. \r \r Pros: Beautiful Place. Great BBQ Cons: if I ate there every day I would weigh 500 LBS!!! more

excellent, savory, fall off the bone 10/26/2006

After reading other citysearch reviews, I decided to try this place. Upon arrival i learned that it was only their second day in the new restaurant. I ordered the babyback ribs to go, along with cole slaw and potato salad. The ribs were delicious, and cooked to perfection. They were obviously pulling them right off the pitt. \r \r The cole slaw was HANDS DOWN the best I had ever tasted- the potato salad was right up there as well. \r \r I think I have found the best BBQ in the bay thanks to fellow city-searchers!\r \r Pros: Great Ambience! Great Beer on tap! more

NEW RESTAURANT ROCKS!!!! 10/25/2006

So this little hole has graduated. Along with a really nice new space, the food has improved as well (It was EXCELLENT to BEGIN WITH). The Beer selection is great- all local with the exception of their Blue Moon- an appropriate tribute to Memphis. \r \r The decor is interesting and wonderful- classy but still down home. \r The new desserts are out of this world... It is now a family friendly, comfortable stylin hang out!.\r \r \r Pros: Great Ambience more

Can't wait for the new place 8/24/2006

My company hired them for catering... otherwise, I never would have known about these guys. It's a small place, with little street visibility.\r Whoever wrote that they don't BBQ their food must 1. be blind , and 2. have no sense of smell. When I pulled up, I saw (and SMELLED) the hickory smoke coming from the kitchen. Not to mention, there are large pitts in the window.\r \r The Food: The food is great- breakfast, lunch, AND dinner. It has CONSISTENTLY been great. The staff is a cast of characters- all of whom I recommend getting to know. \r \r Last time I was there, I was told that they are opening a bigger place next door with a bar. I personally can't wait! It is a fun place to go. Pros: fun, character more

HOLY BBQ! TASTIEST BREAKFAST BURRITO EVER. 7/18/2006

Today I never expected to walk into this little joint and have the tastiest breakfast burrito ever! I noticed the $2.99 breakfast special and thought I would give it a try. Instead, I was really tempted to try one of their regular breakfast items. I couldnt decide between the regular burrito with bacon and sausage or the one with the pulled pork. The waitress said they were both excellent so I figured since its a bbq joint i would go with the pulled pork. All I could say was WOW! The way the egg, cheese, potatoes, onions, peppers and of course pulled pork was layered in my tortilla made my mouth water. I also got BBQ sauce on the side which is amazing. This torpedo of a burrito wil have you pushing your chair back for tummy space. I couldn't finish it all. As a matter of fact, I'm eating the other half right now. Next time I'll split one with some one and try a side of their gravy, maybe. I thought they had a great breakfast selection and pricing was good. Pros: ThUMBS UP!!!!! more

Absolutely Awesome BBQ. For those of you who dont understand whats around you.... 7/16/2006

I have been eating at this little hole in the wall for years and i love the place. I read one review where they thought they werent BBQing!!!! Everyone who pulls into the parking lot can clearly see the 5000 lb brick pits right in the front windows and the smoke chimney on the roof!. They occupy the whole bottom floor and are currently expanding into the larger space next door. They smoke their meats in their pits, some for 14-16 hours! If you cant taste wood smoked flavors in the meat and sauce Its not because of how they prepare their meats. this is a small place and they have been pulling off big in my opinion. I know when I eat the ribs I can see the criss cross marks from the racks on my meat and the sweet smoky flavor. Otherwise, I had the best baby back ribs the otherday. they have been running specials on them. I recommend you try some. I just needed to clear that up for you folks. these guys do a great job and have never let me or any of my friends down. Judge for yourself. Pros: great food Cons: small place more

I can't believe the other reviews!! 7/15/2006

I took the advice of the reviewers and was very disappointed. Five of my family members went for lunch and had BBQ and it was probably the worst I ever had. The meat did not have any BBQ or smoke flavor to it. It tasted like it was cooked in a stove and then had sauce poured over it. That makes sense because the first thing I noticed when walking in was that there was no BBQ or smoke smell in the place at all. For those of us who enjoy BBQ resturants, we know that it is almost impossible to hide the smell of BBQ cooking. \r \r In my opinion, the reason they did such a good job of hiding was because the meat was not BBQ'd. The meat even looked like it came off the stove or oven and not a grill or smoker. There was no evidence of the meat being BBQ'd on the skin of the meat.\r \r In addition, the coleslaw was so dry that we asked for more dressing and overheard the cook discussing with the waitress that they ran out of dressing and was substituting it with something else. \r \r I strongly recommend you don't waste your money on BBQ that taste worse that what you could find in a commercial chain resturant. Pros: parking Cons: bad food, small seating area more
