Dessert to die for 10/24/2008

Outstanding food; had Cioppino and seafood sampler; both were excellent. Cheesecake was sumptous, best ever. Ate on a Sunday evening at 7PM there was an hour wait; very crowded bar and very little room to sit when waiting; free valet parking service. Service was good; had to ask a couple of times for water refills. Pros: great food; just off Muni F line or free valet parking Cons: no reservations; very popular more

One of our favorite places 9/24/2008

The food is always predictably good, it is a very nice ambience, and one of our top five for seafood. We like to go mid afternoon when there is no line or wait, enjoy the waterfront atmosphere, and get the right combination of seafood with an Italian accent. The bread is great and keeps coming with fresh butter. I always like a pasta side. I have had an excellent steak here as well, but we go for the seafood. There is an excellent variety from which to choose, and we have never had a bad meal here. more

You HAVE to try the Crab! A whole freaking crab that even I couldn't finish! 5/23/2008

So, we get to Scoma's and sit in the lounge. Its crazy busy on this Sunday evening, but all the staff is happy and friendly, like they want us to come in and enjoy. We try the Anchor Steam, a local beer, but it wasn't to my Mom's liking. They happily gave her a free glass of wine at our table, which we didn't even ask for. Then, John B, our waiter, eloquently and efficiently helped us with our orders, and promptly brought us some sourdough bread from right down the street. That's right. THE SAN FRAN SOURDOUGH. Then, without a long wait at all, our salads arrived, an even though it was a starter salad, I could barely finish it. As the waiter brought entrees to the next table, he mentioned that they were smaller portions, as requested, and OMG! They were huge! And then it was our turn. Pros: no reservations, but no long waits either Cons: it isn't where I live, here in Canada! more

The presentation was pure and simple. The 6 inch high filet mignon spoke for itself, and the whole, 2 Lbs. Roasted Dungeonous crab smelled so good......I could go on. The crab was roasted with garlic and other herbs that didn't over power the crab, but definately raised the bar. I LOVE steamed crab, but I'm not sure I could ever go back! (Don't worry, there's always room for crab!)\r \r I recommend that you come here. If you want to dress up, dress up, if you want to dress down, dress down. But be prepared for a world class dining experience that can appeal to everyone! Pros: no reservations, but no long waits either Cons: it isn't where I live, here in Canada! more

Dining On The Pier, Today's Catch! Where Is Frank Sinatra, Dino, and Joe? 1/22/2007

This past summer on vacation in S.F., we were still looking for that great seafood meal. Of course we headed to Pier 47, and all the locals, said go to Scoma's. We found it, a rough looking fish boat, and in we went. Around the hostess stand, were photo's of Tony Bennet, Sinatra, Dino, and DiMaggio. Well if it was good enough for them, it certainly was for this little Jewish boy from Atlanta. Hostess sat us right in the window, overlooking the bay. The menu was a total delight. I did not know where to begin, but the Clam Chowder was calling my name. The best I've ever had, even in New England. I ordered the $29.00, yes that's correct, Seafood Salad. It was all chilled fresh seafood caught that morning, by Scoma's Fishing Boat. I will always remember this lunch. And will remember San Francico, and why Joe DiMaggio married Marilyn Monroe, just a couple of blocks away, in North Beach. One of my all-time best dining experiences in the U.S. Oh, please don't be put off because it looks old and worn, with wood paneling, it is! Who cares, with great seafood like this, and it's not just for us tourists, plenty of local businessmen, ladies who lunch, and just people who enjoy great food! Pros: On Board Fresh Seafood Dining! One Of The Best In U.S.! Cons: None! Are You Kidding! more

We Should've Gone Elsewhere 1/14/2007

On our last night in SF, my husband & I decided to take a friend's recommendation and dine at Scoma's, which was within walking distance of our hotel. We were hoping for better. The crab cake sandwich and lobster ravioli were mediocre at best and the decor is downright pedestrian. (Picture wood paneling 1970's style basement.) Our server was very nice, though a bit chatty - I guess the tourists like that kind of behavior. We should've sought out something in my husband's old 'hood where the food would've been better and the atmosphere more interesting. Next time. . . Pros: Below-average food, classless decor Cons: Attentive service more
