Just Awesome 8/9/2008

I've been a customer almost from the beginning but have never taken the time or effort to write a review. I'm ashamed of myself because I love this place and want to see them be successful. I use this site when searching out new venues so it is about time that I gave them the praise they deserve. \r \r The staff is attractive, smart, and knowledgeable and gives really valuable suggestions on what you should order. The menu is just the right size and the food almost always exceeds my expectations. Abraham along with his assistant chef Al always provide a great dining experience. I ordered the tenderloin tonight that melted in my mouth like butter. It was much better than the steak I had the previous week at the nice but over priced Fearings. \r \r The wine list is a cool gem. Whoever chooses the wines has a great pallet and a sense of understanding when it comes to price. The size of the list is just right with some interesting choices including one of my local favorites from Times Ten Cellars in Lakewood. \r \r The only negative that I can report is the lack of a patio. I think this would be hard to come by given their location. I haven't written that many reviews but I do read them so I hope you find this useful. Pros: Food, wine Cons: no patio more

A huge disappointment 7/13/2008

My husband and I and our friends went to Salum last night. I was so looking forward to eating here since I had heard so much about it. What a huge disappointment!!!!! The only thing that was great was the bartender. She was awesome., hence the 1 star.\r Both my friend and I had the mussels. The broth was tasty but, some of the mussels tasted raw! The ones that were not raw were not very good. My husband had the pate which he said was good.\r We all had the lobster entree. Horrible. How can lobster be bad?? The dish comes out with chunks of lobster on risotto. The risotto was not cooked well at all. It was undercooked and not flavorful. The lobster was not seasoned well.\r For dessert we had the berry crisp which was delicious.\r Would not eat here again. Very disappointed Pros: great bartender and the desserts were good Cons: horrible food, service was lacking, very noisy!!!!! more

Don't Let the Location Fool You 8/16/2007

Okay, so maybe I don't lay awake wondering what strip mall I'm going to for my next great meal. And, had a friend not insisted, I would have driven right past Salum and not given it another thought.\r \r Now I can't stop thinking about the gazpacho. No food processor got anywhere near this delightful and tasty summer pleasure, with healthy chunks of tomato, avocado, cucumber and healthy doses of cilantro. Follow it with the salad caprese and just savor dipping bits alternately in the incredible balsamic or zesty pesto.\r \r The servers are knowledgable and attentive and truly caring. It's something rare these days. I have found my new favorite lunch spot. Pros: Service, Flavor, Value Cons: Eating in a strip mall? more

Good times, good food. 3/24/2007

Salum was great. For a last minute impromptu Saturday night dining out, the team at Salum had no problem accommodating us. We were left hanging for a minute, once we were seated. But when our server finally did make it over to our table he more than made up for his tardiness. We started with wine and cocktails paired with the watercress and watermelon salad. It was divine, and a perfect starter to split. Next up was the beef tenderloin with Yukon mashed potatoes and mushroom bur Blanc sauce, it was cooked to perfection, and the beef flavor was not compromised in the dish. The proscuitto wrapped halibut with tomato coulis and black lentils was phenomenal. We finished with the apple berry crisp a la mode - we added a scoop of vanilla bean gelato. After that, we were singing the praised of Salum. Two enthusiastic thumbs up for this diamond in the rough. more

Perfect Low Key Dallas Dining 2/21/2007

Very non ""Dallas Scene"" restaurant with wonderful food and service. Highly recommend the Lamb Chops. Just a place to have a lovely dinner. I would pick this place over many other fine dining restaurants in Dallas, great food without the attitude in many other popular spots. We most recently visited pre-theatre and they were very helpful in making sure we were done in time to make our show. Pros: Service was attentive without being annoying - perfect, food was wonderful Cons: Location is less than impressive, but I kind of consider that a plus. more

Very nice experience, but not thrilling cuisine 2/16/2007

I setup my reservation to beat the crowd on a Friday night, and my wife and I were really looking forward to something special. The decor was as described by Citysearch -- minimal, modern, and nice. Not too trendy or over the top, but a bit empty until the place fills up with guests.\r \r The service was excellent. Chef Salum himself took our coats and later checked on us to see if all had gone well, and the rest of the staff shares his relaxed but attentive demeanor. The waiter gave us nice set of recommended wines, and found a really delicious Pinot Noir. They also were happy to split our salad plate without us asking.\r \r The food was good, and well executed, but nothing to write home about. Seared fois gras was nicely rare and paired with a very good sauce, but a serrano and mozzarella salad came with cold, unappetizing tomatoes that were such a strange February choice for a place that changes its menu every month.\r \r Our entrees were also a bit mixed. The r*ck of lamb (the only dish that stays all year) was very good. It had a nice crust, came as rare as ordered, had an excellent sauce, and a surprising and succulent stuffing on the side. That stuffing made our night. My pork shank started out good -- perfectly tender with nice crust from the cooking. However, the flavoring and sauce lacked depth and flavor. I'd describe it as sweet with a bit of meatiness, but it was missing something. Half way through, I was bored. The risoto underneath was also well-executed, but needed a spark from the pork and its sauce that just wasn't there.\r \r For dessert, the choices were pretty standard fare. We had a slice of chocolate caramel tart. It was nice; rich and chocolatey, a thin crunchy crust underneath. I could have gone with just the fruit sauce, as it didn't meld well with the caramel. The espresso gelato was also nice, but it also didn't go with the fruity sauce.\r \r Overall, we had a very nice night, but the food might benefit from not changing quite so often. Pros: Service, Parking, General execution of dishes Cons: Uneven food more

under the radar 5/21/2006

this restaurant does not seem to get as much hype as places like Abacus or 2900 but in fact this is one of the better restaurants in town. the wine list has a good selection by the glass, the service is very personable and the food quality is generally quite good. we had the buffalo ribeye (perfectly medium rare) and the swordfish. the mussels were just OK but the goat cheese and garlic appetizer is a great starter. Pros: service, food quality, wine list Cons: small interior more

Fanstatic Service and Very fresh items 4/25/2006

Ducked in with no reservations and had a great dinner Monday night. Menus items were incredibly fresh and very tasty. A lower key setting (not overly decorated), interesting with the kitchen in full view, but not in a bad, noisy way ( and it did get busier after 730pm). Service was great, they offered to modify an entree to be able to split without being asked. Just a really nice dinner. The BEST tomato basil soup of the day that we have ever had. Pros: fresh menu items, great customer servic, good value Cons: in a strip mall more
