Hunan Lion is the BEST Chinese Food in the STATE 12/5/2008

My husband and I have been regular customers for over 15 years! Like all restaurants, it has experienced ups and downs. About 5 years ago, there was a period of about one year where we were incredibly dissatisfied with the food and service. Once again, Hunan Lion is BACK with simply the VERY BEST Chinese food in Austin, and easily beats pricy competition in other large cities like Houston and Dallas. The sesame chicken and Hunan Lion Chicken dishes are our favorites, and are simply excellent. The soups are tasty and we highly recommend the the crab rag outs and cucumber salad. Over the years we have ordered just about everything on the menu and can tell you honestly that anything you order will be the best you've ever tasted in Chinese food! Pros: parking is never a problem, prices are great, food is excellent quality Cons: they do tend to fill your tea right when you get it sugar'd and lemon'd just right, but that's good service, just say 'no thanks' more

Do not Go!!! 5/27/2007

The service was awful, there was one other table in the restaurant it took 45mins to get the ""famous"" duck with crepes and hosin sauce. The duck tasted like it was boiled and was tasteless. I ordered the crab rangoon, that had no crab in it. Probably one ot the worst restaurants Ive ever eaten at!!!! Pros: getting to leave Cons: everything else more

Kung Pao chicken is amazing here... 7/29/2006

As is the sesame chicken, beef & broccoli, and kung pao beef. All have been excellent. The service is friendly and the owners are very hands on in ensuring your dining experience is a positive one. Pros: Kung Pao chicken - possibly the best in Austin. Cons: if you sweeten your tea with sugar: as soon as you're done with the hassle of getting your tea just right, it gets refilled even though it's still 80% full. more

Good, quick and cheap 1/23/2006

Went in for lunch and had terrific shrimp delight. Very friendly staff. Cost less than $6 for a pretty large portion. I highly recommend and will go back again. more

Working up to the Duck 3/22/2004

This was our second trip since moving to S. Austin and it is hands down the best chinese my girlfriend and I have had. The service is a little young and inexperienced but nice. The wine list is small but there are some gems... but the FOOD! We can hardly wait to order the Peking Duck! Pros: Inexpensive, Delicious, Consistent Cons: , Frequently Families more

Wonderful find 6/1/2003

We have lived all over, and one of the hardest parts of moving is each time having to go through alot of bad Chinese restaurants to find a fave. Luckily, we fairly quickly found Hunan Lion close by. Though it was a shock to hubby at first to find his fave sweet n sour pork was not covered in batter...his surprise became delight, it was wonderful. I have deeply enjoyed the combo fried rice, lo mein and cashew chicken. We both adore the tiny little eggrolls. One other great thing: if it's not on their menu, they advertise that you should ask for it...they very well might specially make it for you! Pros: Food, location more

Best Duck in Austin 11/8/2002

This is not your typical Chain restaurant that caters to the Dull Palate. The food is very well prepared and they take extra care with the presentation. When they say hot they mean hot. The Peking Duck is by far the best in Austin. You get the whole duck and for the parts not used in the Peking presentation, they give you choices (soup, moo shu, etc) as to how you would like it prepared and served. Excellent atmosphere and attentive service. I go often for the duck. more

Austin's Chinese 8/20/2002

I have always loved the Hunan Lion's food. I will be moving out of Austin soon and will miss it. The owner is always very nice and willing to please. The sesame chicken cannot be beat. more

Almost as good as my Grandmother's 8/18/2002

Eating here was the highlight of my trip to Austin. The food was wonderful, the ambience reminded me of my great-aunt's house, the service was good and it was very reasonably priced. There were four of us and 2 soups, 3 hors d'oeuvres, and 4 entrees came in around $50. more
