Best

Best Italian food in town!!!! Pros: null Cons: null

Worst

This place was okay - not the best I've had Pros: good food, creme brulee, chicken saltimboca

Excellent experience!` 8/18/2004

This restaurant is a wonderful neighborhood home-like small bistro. I absolutely LOVE the pizza and their pasta dishes are unbelievably good. Atmosphere, kindness of waitstaff, all was a very positive experience. These people recognize you when you are a repeat customer, and treat you like family. Prices are very moderate, and I have made it a favorite. Pros: atmosphere, food, prices more

Best Authentic Italian 8/5/2003

Best authentic Italian in the triangle...hands down. The food is sinfully good with rich sauces and fresh pastas, the service is impeccable, and the ambiance is nice. It's a fairly small restaurant, with a nice little bar area - I have found it to be romantic even though I usually don't feel that way in such open spaces. Low lighting tends to help with the atmosphere. As for the food - I can't say enough about it. I highly recommend this place as a little-known charm up in N. Raleigh. more

Awesome Awesome Awesom 5/21/2003

My wife ventured to San Carlos with a friend of hers a week ago on a whim. She was so thrilled that we went together 3 days later. We were greeted by Denis, the manager, who remembered my wife after only one visit. My wife was right, the food was amazing. The ambience was perfect for a couple or small group of friends. I've been to many Italian Bistros in Raleigh, but San Carlos reigns supreme. Pros: Excellent Food, Great Embience, Strong Drinks more

Anything but Enjoyable 3/3/2003

I was very pleased to find an Italian restaurant was opening soooo close to me, then I went to San Carlos. There were only 4 other people in the restaurant when we arrived, but it took over 20 minutes to bring us our appetizers and almost an hour for the main dish. It also VERY apparent that the space was not designed to be a restaurant. They did what they could, but it still looks like a strip mall store with a bar. Not very cozy or romantic. Pros: Not crowded Cons: No Service, High Price more

awesome food 11/17/2002

THE FOCACCIA BREAD IS EXCELLENT.THE PRICES ARE GREAT, SO YOU COULD ACTUALLY EAT HERE A FEW TIMES A WEEK.I HAD MY ALL TIME FAVORITE DISH "VEAL SALTINBOCCA"MY HUSBAND HAD PIZZA PESCATORE.AND YOU HAVE TO TRY THE APPETIZER "MISTO " DELICIOUS!! Pros: GREAT FOOD AT GREAT P more

Good place! 11/7/2002

Tonite I visited San Carlo for the first time and wished I found out about it earlier. My neighbor sent me there. I ordered the calamari and it has to be the best in town. I then had the salmon special and it was delicious. I was informed by the waitress that the chef's specials change nightly and are usually first rate. I will return!! Pros: fresh seafood, strong wine list, quaint and intimate Cons: children more

eccellentissimo bistro 11/6/2002

When you walk in to S. C. bistro you`ll find yourself in a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. And that`s what I like about it. That`s why I`m going back from time to time with my husband to enjoy quality peacful time together after work. I enjoy the variety of the dinnerplates and I know when I order their special on that night I will not be disappointed. If you don`t like loud, running children around your dinnertable, and you just want to relax and enjoy a nice glass of wine, than go there. The wait might be long on the weekends but it is worth it. Even if you`re not really sure about what to drink or eat, the experienced servers are going to help you out. I am very happy that this Bistro is right in my neighborhood. Pros: quiet, quality, relaxing more

Love the place 11/3/2002

I have dined at San Carlo over 5 times now. It is so refreshing to have something similar to the Italian food I miss from NY. I called one evening on a saturday and the manager remembered my name and guarranteed my wife and I seats at the bar, knowing that seating was at least an hour wait. Now thats personalized service. I have eaten the veal and found it fork tender and the red sauce is close to my mother in law's, who happens to be from Sicily. The only complaint I have is the wine list is not as varied as I liked but found a good brunello. I have eaten at the local Italian eateries and found the veal tough and the red sauce just passable, but the chef at San Carlo is not afraid of garlic and fresh herbs. Keep up the good work! Pros: Real garlic, reservations, Food quality Cons: children more

Not worth the money 10/28/2002

If you are looking for authentic italian food don't go to San Carlo's Italian Bistro. There was a poor Italian wine selection, the food was not authentic. If you are looking for the italian staples go to Maggiano's at Southpoint. more

Cozy 10/24/2002

A very enjoyable restaurant. I've been 3 times and each time the food was excellent- and i'm a food snob! The staff is outstanding. Not too stuffy, and very cozy. Good place for a week night dinner. more

Delicious! 10/17/2002

We have eaten at San Carlo several times. Each time the food has been excellent. It is some of the best Italian I've had in the Triangle. The wait staff was quite courteous and helpful. It's cozy so I strongly suggest making a reservation. We'll definitely go back. Pros: Delicious Food, Courteous Staff more

Authentic Italian Food! 10/13/2002

San Carlo had excellent, authentic Italian food. The wait staff was very polite and professional and the atmosphere was charming. There is no children's menu, so it isn't the greatest place to take your kids, but I would highly recommend it for adult dinners (business or pleasure) or a casual lunch. It also has a good wine list. Pros: Great Food, Good Value, Plenty of Parking Cons: No Children's Menu, Small Place more

NOT GOING BACK! 10/2/2002

I loved the concept of going into a smaller Italian restaurant, until I got there. It was 2 of us and we walked in and was told the wait would be about 15-25 minutes. So we proceeded to sit at the bar and have a glass of wine while waiting, when we were told that the ONLY 2 seats left at the bar were saved by someone that could not get there by their "reservation time", so they wanted to sit at the bar in these 2 seats. I have NEVER heard of "saving" seats at a bar. If you can't make it by reservation time, then TOO BAD! Go somewhere else! They have lost my business and anyone else I talk to about it! more

Italian Food The Way It was meant to be. 8/25/2002

If you want real Italian food you must try this Bistro. Non smoking restaurant (except at the bar) the bartenders are top rate and very friendly. You Must Try it. Dinner is the best. With a great assortment of wines. Pros: Great Food, Great Service, Great Service Cons: Not Romantic, Not a sports place, Busy on Fri. & Sat. more

Tastes ok, Service is horrible! 7/23/2002

The food is ok but not up to Nena's, Mama Lia's or the Italian Chop House Standards. The service was the killer for me. 10 min. to get drinks (water), 20 min. to get appetizer, 35 min. to get salads. 1 more hour to get meal! And then the server blames my wife for the wait because she ordered a non garlic sauce. They gave her oil and butter on shell pasta. I could make that in my sleep in 10 min. Please. No offer for discount and my father's food was cold. No way am I going back. We have too many great Italian restaurants in the area to settle for this one. Cons: slow, over priced, no flexibility more

Refreshing 6/23/2002

e eaten there twice and each time I have been happily surprised. The food is excellent and the chef does and good job of tweaking familiar dishes to add splashes of unexpected flavor. I only hope that the place does not fade out in a year with a change in management or cooks. Keep up the good work! Pros: Very good food, small atmosphere, good chef Cons: long wait on weekends, noisy little kids more
