Editorial review from Citysearch 8/23/2012

Great atmosphere and some of the best horchata in town, but the show is all about the empanadas, try the Colombiana, the mole or the calabacita. The guava and cream cheese sweet empandas are extraordinary. more

Guy Feiri blows it again. 10/17/2011

Thought we'd try it after seeing it on Triple D. What total waste! The empenadas were dark brown, The al pastor was blackened and almost tasteless. It was like what we were served was re heated left-overs from the night before. And service non-existant. The waitress took our order and disappeared until the food came out . Which was unfortunate because in the 30 minutes it took the kitchen to re-hash the left-overs we decided we would have liked an appetizer. And when the food came she vanished again so she did not have to hear us tell her that the food was barely warm and the beans were cold. It's obvious that the wait staff and the cooks don't if this place is open next week. more

Doesn't get any better than this! 11/18/2010

Our family has followed this restaurant from its original location (downtown) to its final location on Broadway, just south of 410. Although, the location has changed the delicious food has not. We have a list of favorite items from the menu but our favorite would have to be fish tacos with poblano sauce, (this sauce can be used on anything on the menu it is delicious). Not only can we enjoy a lovely meal, but our children love it too. There is a small play area in the back that is great for the kids to let loose while we finish up our meal with a glass of wine or mojito. more

My favorite restaurant! 10/23/2010

I frequent Beto's regularly and have never been disappointed. I've had their empanadas, fish tacos and quesadillas. On my last visit I had the chicken nachos and they were just as delicious as everything else. The atmosphere is charming and the service is fun and friendly. I've met the owners and they too were lovely. Nothing but good to say about my favorite restaurant in SA! more

San Antonio's Little Jewel 10/17/2010

This is one of San Antonio's best! Quaint family owned restaurant with great service. The food was excellent, we had the best chcken nachos I've ever had and delicious fish tacos, and for desert a yummy banana empanada. I hghly recommend Beto's! Will definitely visit there again! more

a jewel of a find 7/7/2010

Much to my surprise the food was great. We had drinks, chips and salsa for starters. I had Chicken Poblano empanadas. The empanadas were excellent and of course should be. Empanadas is what this place is known for. The food is more like real Mexican food and not the Tex-Mex I usally eat. It is inexpensive and filling. I also had Mango with raspberry sauce empanadas for dessert. This dessert alone is worth going back for . With all this food I was stuffed and almost had to be rolled out of there.\r Pros: easy to locate Cons: don't expect a lot of atmosphere more

a little concerned 10/4/2009

The service was slow. The food mediocre, and the place seemed dirty. \r All of that kind of ruined my appetite. I did not finish my food, in fact I barely started. \r I have to look at the health department reviews. Pros: Had read positive comments. Cons: I found the place to be dirty, kind of yucky. more

Been there, done that... next?! 4/1/2009

Tried Beto's today basedon a friend's recommendation. After reading some of the reviews, I was really surprised at how many people think this place is great? Went there with my DH for lunch and, while we don't regret going, we probably won't go again. I had an empanada. I expected it to be a flaky pastry crust but it wasn't so my guess is that it was microwaved. DH had a quesadilla which I tried, and that was OK. The empanadas are the size of a small taco, like one you would get at taco bell for about 79 cents, but these cost about $3.99 ea. For an extra $4 (?!?!) you can make it a meal with some rice (white rice with what seemed like were old chunks of carrot and old peas and corn, and about 3 bites worth of beans, which were bland. They don't even gie you chips and salsa (what place in this town doesn't?) so we paid $3 for that, and it came with a small bowl of salsa that's not really salsa and some processed cheese dip. I was really surprised to see they had a Zagat rating because it's just OK, nothing even close to great. The atmosphere was real nice and somewhat eclectic, and our service was very good. Pros: outdoor patio seating Cons: not much value, so-so food more

Flavorful, Original, Essentially Good Food 3/29/2008

I had driven past this place several times before someone I knew actually ate there and told me it was good. I went on my own and was delighted that it is much better than it appears outside. There is a large parking lot behind (and to the right) of the building and also a nice patio for outdoor dining. They are ZAGAT listed (that was a surprise) and they take AMEX. \r \r The only thing I have to say that's negative is that the food is a little overpriced and the portion size didn't satisfy me; I'm not a pig or anything, but I'm used to getting more for my money. Service was GREAT, we sat outside on a breezy day and it was wonderful, even if I hadn't had two of their delicious margaritas. \r \r They seem to be best known for their empanadas which is bread stuffed with your selection from various choices. Each member of my party selected a different one and we shared tastes. They were uniformly good. I still intend to go back to try the other menu items, but for now I can vouch for the empanadas. Definitely try this place. This isn't exactly Tex-Mex; but related. A waitress told me the owners are from Ecuador. Some of the customers are snooty, but the staff is very warm and welcoming. Pros: Unique, Flavorful, Palatable Latin Fare for the Unfamiliar Cons: Portion Sizes, Snooty Customers more

Food is delicious! But it's time for some good service! 2/13/2008

My wife, mother in law and I frequent Beto's sunday afternoons about twice a month. We LOVE the food! Very rarely are we not pleased with what we have. My wife and I especially like the Veggie Nachos. HUGE plate with delicious veggies and a fantastic poblano sauce on top. The empenadas are also amazing especially the chicken poblano. My only complaint is that the staff has really got to get some trainers in there. Like a previous reviewer said, they just aren't doing the job they could and I know for a fact that the management isn't helping the matter. It's time for this restaurant to find a team that can do the food team justice! Pros: Foooooooood! Cons: Service needs work more

Average food with below average service! 4/7/2007

Three friends and I recently had dinner at Beto's and I was NOT impressed! I have no major complaints about the food but I have two very big complaints about the service and staff. First, it took our waiter longer to get our bills in order at the end of our meals than it took for my friends and I to actually eat dinner. When the waiter finally got it all together, he charged each of us for the wrong dinners. I then found out he charged me three times, causing an overdraft on my bank account! I called the following day to inform the manager of the situation and his response was to try and make me feel guilty about possibly having the waiter fired, and then to put me on hold. The food is average and average is not good enough to make me want to eat at any establishment where I am not valued as a customer! more

Fun Ultra Casual Lunch 5/1/2006

I like the laid back atmosphere especially on the shaded patio. Great place to kick back a few beers and watch the kids play on the playground after an afternoon of yardwork - shorts and t-shirt are appropriate attire. I cannot comment on live music - I am strictly a lunch patron. The menu offers something a little different than the typical SA fare which is refreshing. Plates are on the smallish side - portion control taken too far. The dessert empanadas can be quite scant on filling. : ( The waiter situation is odd - you order at a counter but there are waiters that bring food to the table. Never quite sure which is ""my"" waiter or how much to tip in this situation. more

Don't be deceived by the word ""cheap"" 2/7/2005

I do not agree with people calling this place ""cheap."" For the amount of food you get it is anything but. Both the empanadas & quesadillas are the size of a small taco & over $3 each. I had to pay $0.75 extra to substitute yucca fries with my combo & I was served only 3(!) fries. And their idea of refried beans was bean slush. The food is good yes, but for the price, can I have enough to constitute a meal? The live entertainment (Floating Opera Band) helped make up for it, but I still want more food. Pros: good food, live music, paletas Cons: more food for money more

neat joint 8/15/2002

not expensive and yet the quality is grand. Go there, you won't be disappointed. Pros: comfortable, inexpensive more

Good and cheap! 8/12/2002

Beto's is high quality food at low prices. The food is unique and tasty, not just the usual tacos or burgers. With the availability of beer and wine, you can enjoy a great evening for little $$$. The covered patio is excellent for casual parties. I go there weekly to enjoy a nice lunch at a reasonable price. Pros: value, food variety, vegetarian dishes Cons: no table service more

great sunday brunch 8/9/2002

This is a treasure of San Antonio. I had a great sunday brunch with my lover along with my favorite...reggae music. I have only been twice, but I stay for hours each time I go. The signature empandas are to die for. more
