Head to the suburbs and enjoy beautiful Beartown State Forest, which rests on a plateau filled with the hilltops of the Hoosac Range. Mt. Wilcox is 2,150 feet and Beartown Mountain is 1,865.
The area has many streams and ponds stocked with trout and bass. The Appalachian Trail runs through the forest and is ideal for backpacking.
However, it is surprising that one of the state's largest forests has a campground with only 12 sites. Even when weekend campers leave, others are waiting to take their place.
