Bagel Lovers Prepare! 3/25/2012

I love (really love) these bagels (and bialys). The bagels are so fresh (being made throughout the day) that often mine is warm from the oven when served. mmmmm. We go at least once a week--sometimes several times a week. Owner Ken is obviously outstanding when it comes to picking the right folks to work here since the staff is warm, friendly, efficient and johnny/janie on the spot! When we have guests in town, we virtually always take them to the Bagelry. What else can I say? My mouth is watering for an everything with scallion -- gotta go! more

Beyond Mediocre Bagels: Dignity Depriving Service 8/20/2009

If I could give this place a negative star, I would. After reading positive reviews on multiple websites, excitement grew, anticipating a visit to the famed Bagelry in my personal food tour of Bellingham. In fact, it was the first stop I made upon arrival into town. Inside, the many workers buzzed about preparing for the morning rush. It was a few minutes before my existence was acknowledged. Then came the hello and my order of Italian spinach omelet and pumpernickel bagel was taken. As I sat there slowing taking apart my meal, I thought about how I would explain the food in a review. The verdict? Mediocre. The vegetables in the omelet were fresh, but the meal was nothing to be raved about. Sure the bagel was better than a store bought one, anything is better than store bought, but for a place that specializes in it, it was rather ordinary. Disclaimer: this review of the food was done in my head--without bias--prior to the following episode. Now for the beginning of a trip from hell. In walks my parents and little sister. Walking by, they saw me in the window and decided to join. My mom goes to the counter and orders the same thing I was having. She claims they told her to go to the back of the line, when clearly she was there before anyone else. I can't speak for her; I didn't see it happen, but I do trust her word. So we're sitting--me eating, my parents sipping on their Starbucks and waiting for their meal. All of a sudden, a worker stops by our table and says, ""Just for next time, you can't have that. We serve coffee here."" Okay, that's understandable. We're out of towners, Starbucks-craving city folk; we didn't know. Our bad. My mom, upset from her ordering experience, responded, ""Don't worry, there won't be a next time."" And in a very non-sincere voice, the worker asked, ""Oh yeah, why is that?"" My mother proceed to explain the situation to him. He barked back, ""Well we'll pack your food to go then."" She told them she was going to stay. He wouldn't have it. ""No. We're packing your food."" This went back and forth for a little bit. By now, we had the attention of everyone there. Appetites lost, my mom demanded a refund. They wouldn't budge. Not wanting to regret any decisions that this situation was taking her, she said, ""Keep our money, keep the food."" And out the door we went. Straight out of town actually. I want to know, since when did this become an acceptable way to treat paying customers? What kind of business are they running? Was that a legitimate reason to kick us out? And if so, could it have been done in a more respectful manner? We are all humans, and we all deserve to be treated with dignity. Never in my life have I been so mortified, hurt, and disappointed with the society in which we live. My family feels the same way. I urge you, community of City Search and fellow consumers, don't support a place that doesn't respect you. Spread the word. If it happened to us, it can happen to any of you. Pros: The food isn't completly horrible Cons: Service from hell more
